Honestly, most of the focus by devs should be on the experience that the vast majority of the playerbase has, which is for the most part normal with some EX content. Make that more interesting, make classes more interesting to play. Who gives a shit if fartmaster 6000 and the CUM clan clear TOP 0.7s faster with a specific loadout?
I'd give healers more interesting DPS rotations. Just a little bit, not even as complex as WAR or SMN. I don't like that they all just have 30s DoT + a filler spam spell, and that my reward for optimised healing (the fun part of the job) is to press that filler spam spell over and over.

Yeah, this honestly, even the 1.0 system seems more interesting than what we have now. Let us hit the monster with attacks we do ourselves (not auto attacks) and then let that build meter to do our special skills. Have something like XI's skill chain system, but with an action combat system.

After finishing 6.4, more and more I come to realise how pointless patch content is, the story especially. It's like filler. Just going through the expected motions, every time, and always ending the patch story the same way every time. There's nothing interesting going on whatsoever.
The same characters show up. They don't have anything interesting to say. They figure out how to do X to reach the Bad Guy, which of course is The Trial Of The Patch. But also you may have to do The Dungeon Of The Patch to help with solution X to reach the Bad Guy.
It seems to be genuinely for the best to drop the game after you're done with an expansion, and then pick it up again only when the next expansion is out. Skip through all the patch shit, because 99% of it has the quality of filler.

Bring back NIN DoT
Bring back Cleric Stance
Bring back StB AST cards
Bring back Scholar dots and fairy abilities
Buff skillspeed to make it a viable option
Rework raid loot system so alt jobs can get geared up faster

Force people to clear a solo instance that requires doing every possible base mechanic correctly. Can't access the High-end Party Finder unless you clear it, and you need to do it every expansion.
Golbez EX is the most basic Extreme in the entire expansion and yet people are still fricking up light party and numeration stacks.
I seem to remember back in 3.0 Yoshi once saying you'd be able to practice specific mechanics somehow, but that was either scrapped or a mistranslation.
