And it might not be random spawn, but I recall the level hub becoming crazy dangerous after some levels with enemies I could not defeat with the default weapon and needed magic, or they took a stupid amount of time and I was getting mobbed
Yes the ice shards generally weak and you run out of ammo by spamming it on everything. The flechettes serve as an additional weapon for each class to cover up weaknesses. You want to kite enemies into them and also line them up so you can use your wand, as it pierces enemies. All classes struggle with certain enemies until they get their third weapon.
On lower difficulties, it is just the occasional ettin, which the warrior dispatches easily. I don't remember what it looks like on higher settings, don't usually play them.

For me the biggest con is the weapon variety, but I have stockholm syndrome with the melee weapons in these games and masochistically enjoy it.

The first weapon has infinite ammo and if you are not playing Deathkings then the only enemy that randomly spawn are Ettins.

I've played both the main game and the expansion with all 3 classes, honestly I can't pick a favourite, they all have their pros&cons
if you don't pick Fighter the game is way too boring because the weapon balance sucks ass
I love Hexen but cleric/mage are garbage until their third weapons and the enemies are all sandbaggy shit anyway
