You don't need to care about 100%ing every little detail and you can just pick chars you like. The game doesn't require perfectly tooled up characters - for the final dungeon last time I had a really good team (Locke, Sabin, Terra and I think Gogo, if Gogo can heal/repeat big damage moves he's the man) a goodish team (Celes, Edgar, Cyan, Setzer with Gil Throw) then the team I dump the shitters into (Mog, Relm, Umaro, Gau, they weren't entirely shit chars as they had at least one spammable attack and lesser healing magics, but I used them less cus of their gimmicks)
But hey, get what you want out of the thing. I also played Woolsey Uncensored with the 'fixed' Cyan so disregard I suck wieners. I think they balanced his damage fairly well (he's not a rape machine like Sabin, and winds up more of an Edgar level) and given Pixel Remaster even had its own shot at 'fixing' him he's not bottom tier anymore.

Personally I can't go without thieves in RPGs if they can steal items, I just love the mechanic. Yangus in DQ8 and his abysmal steal rate can go frick itself though.
Blue Magic though, I'll only care on a replay.

that's exactly my team for the veldt Gau Rage safari. Locke steals rare items from enemies that I missed and Relm uses sketch/mind-control to help teach Strago Lores all while Gau gets a new cool Rage that he may run across.
