I'm the opposite. This is the first 2d mario game that looks good to me. The older (S)NES games had their charm but never actually looked good like Sonic did. NSMB was bad because of the shit models, low res, and how metallic everything looked. I know you probably don't see the difference but I'm speaking to other anons who do.
Speaking of Sonic Superstars, it's okay but Mania sprites were perfect. I dislike when 2.5d games give the platforms "depth" i.e. a slightly top-down perspective (Kirby does this). Adds too much visual clutter and is harder to tell where I'm landing. I like that NSMB & Wonder keep it completely flat orthographic with separate parallax layers. They probably are just pre-rendered sprites.
I feel like old people really really REALLY like that Pixar cartoon artstyle. It's like they're still riding the wow factor when it was completely new in the 90s. I think it's a bit too distracting and excessively detailed, I like pure 2D art best. Not that it's bad, it's just not my preference.

This is my biggest concern, visually the characters and animations look great but the actual levels look really boring once you get past all the wackiness. People are getting caught up in Mario finally animating well as a 3D character in a 2D game that not as much focus is being put on how empty a lot of the levels seem when you aren’t in Wonder Seed land
