the original starters were all nonconventional animals anyways, and by nonconventional i mostly mean not mammals. there was the exception of cyndaquil i guess but even then it's some kind of unidentifiable rodent or marsupial or something instead of just "dog" or "cat" or "rabbit"
May not have been intentional but Cyndaquil is pretty clearly just a cartoon echidna if you compare pictures. Other than the more distinct head and obvious fire on its back it's a near perfect match. The main difference from a hedgehog is the longer pointed snout, which Cyndaquil definitely has.
that's why i said "marsupial", i don't think it was intentional since echidnas weren't that widely known plus it's evolutions look nothing like an echidna, but i still see cyndaquil as one
i think it looks pretty good, the yellow spots on the hands look a little off to me but not enough that i think there's anything actually wrong with the design

OP here, I have to admit, the dog is my least favorite of the entire starter trio (Grass beetle and Water sea turtle). Toad speaks to me better imo.

first and last are great, but the first version of the middle stage had WAY more personality
