I was old enough, and I remember being struck about people I knew who were super excited for it, but when pressed upon it weren't really knowledgeable about Sonic.
It was sort of the first time I became aware that there is a major strain of person who gets excited about stuff mostly because they know they're supposed to get excited about it.

it was certainly a time to be growing up, man. even if the 7th gen spelled the end as we know it, and brawl being made spitefully by sakurai, that fricking sonic reveal was legendary. I had actual chills as a kid.
Frickin going from the chills of the fricking end boss in sonic adventure 2 battle just a few years prior, to that, was like being spoiled over and over again. Credit were its due, even if sega only knew how to massively frick things up, they sure wanted to at least make kids happy, and they did.

The reason is Ness was supposed to get cut in Melee and he only stayed in because EB64 got cancelled. So the Lucas reveal had us all thinking it finally happened. Happy to be wrong.
He is supposed to be a secret unlockable in Brawl so Sakurai refused to show him before the game came out. Same went for Luigi, Marth, Ness, Jigglypuff, etc.

That was the first time I heard Japanese Snake because I'm pretty sure the first trailer of him wasn't even localized.
I remember first seeing the cutscenes on yt back in 2007 despite all of them being in japanese and was so stoked for it. Brawl still is unironically the most epic smash game to date.

Classic purists I'll never understand. I also grew up with a Genesis. Adventure Sonic is not a reboot it was a pretty natural and smooth transition. It's still Sonic.

It's a fine design. One of the few character design updates in history to actually work. I agree, Generations should have been a one-off cute nod to the audience.
i personally dont have a problem with it but i think if they made sonic look more like he did in the OVA it wouldve been better. it wouldve still worked with the more serious stories they wanted to do in the 2000s.
OVA and junio sonic is so kino, i'm fine with the modern design, but it just can't compare.

Some of my favorite Sonic games are the 3D ones but even I agree that the classic design is far superior. There's something about the modern art style that just feels... gross to me? The right artwork looks like cute cartoon characters while the left looks distinctly furry. I know Sonic isn't supposed to be "cute" but there's supposed to be a balance of edge and chibi to the characters. The modern iteration of Sonic in particular ruins a lot of his appeal for me.

In an old Nintendo Power interview promoting Mega Man 9, the interviewer asks why Mega Man didn’t make it into Brawl. The two guys being interviewed (I think Inafune was one of them?) both say that it was purely because Capcom expected a call from Nintendo, when it was actually the other way around, and Nintendo had actually been approached by Sega and Kojima, and that if they had known they would have gotten the business heads talking. Assuming they’re telling the truth I wonder how Mega Man would’ve turned out if he had been shoved into Brawl early instead of being made the main face of 4’s announcement?

It probably played out for him much better if Sonic's moveset is anything to go by. The focus on more gimmicky characters in sm4sh might have had more influence on Mega Man's moveset, but idk. That time crunch to put Sonic in Brawl (combined with Sakurai's autism against reworking movesets) makes him a disappointing monkey's paw.
I liked Brawl fanart, had a lot of soul also the subspace interactions and weird pairings.
