Gen 3 as a whole is mechanically closer to Pokemon of today than it is to Gen 1. Only thing really missing is the Physical / Special split and Fairy type.
Meanwhile, between 1 and 3 there was the Special Stat split, Dark and Steel added, Natures, Held Items, Abilities, Double Battles, etc.
