I'm currently downloading and throwing games into a 1TB SSD for my fat PS2. Hit me with all your suggestions, I wanna fill this shit up so I don't have to do this again. I've already got most of the obvious stuff and some HIDDEN GEMS but I'm sure there's a lot I'm missing.

if you're into anime/vns i discovered the yarudora series which has games on ps1 and PS2 (no translation)
i should add that if a game is made in japan, then it is to be found on the second list even if it had a release overseas. in that sense these lists are a bit cumbersome for those looking for english language releases of japanese games.
Stuntman
Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

do you know japanese?
yes, give

1TB is not enough, you need 2TB. That said please make sure you try the following:
Downhill Domination
SkyGunner
Sky Odyssey
Sub Rebellion
Dog's Life
These games all had many surprises and were a delight to play through and in many cases continue to return to. I also recommend:
18 Wheeler by Sega
King of Route 66 by Sega
Both Big Mutha Truckers games
Firefighter FD18
Neo Contra
Contra Shattered Soldier
The Red Star
Spy Hunter
>1TB is not enough, you need 2TB.
Not OP but the PS2 gets kinda funky when it tries handling drives bigger than 1TB
No just use exfat and grimdoomers OPL
Grimdoomers hasn't been updated in a year. The official OPL supports exfat anyhow
In my case I've been using a WD green 2tb for years and never had issues. Regular old partition system, no exfat. It's probably a brand thing.
I just downloaded Grimsdoomer's v1.2.0.3 Beta for my OPL and didn't experience any issues playing Persona 3 FES all the why up to the first battle where I stopped after saving. So why not use the drag and drop one, unless there is a major issue I am unaware of?
I set up my PS2 years ago before exfat and zso were a thing. Took the time to remove the dummy files from all the games that had it (like half the catalog) and tested every single game so I could make per game configs of the games that had issues by default. I'm kinda tempted to format the whole thing and start using exfat, but it's a long project that will take me months. I will switch one day though.
What in the frick am I looking at?
You will die of old age before you play 2tb worth of PS2 games
I played that game recently, feels like a really shitty beta.
looks like one too
i managed to fit 293 games on my 1tb drive. that plus virtual memory cards for each letter of alphabet and artwork filled my drive with only 128mb left. so 290-295 games will be your rough target, OP
damn, can you post a link to a guide/tutorial?
https://www.psx-place.com/threads/opl-all-in-one-configuration-thread-art-cfg-cht-thm-and-vmc-packs-for-all-games-hdd-usb-smb.28204/
get the packs pack from here. i didn't use the art pack so i can't speak for its quality. use OPL manager to delete all the cfg and art files for games not on your drive since there's thousands upon thousands in the packs.
all the cfg files do is tell OPL what virtual memory card to use from the VMC pack, they are blank apart from that. all known games that have issues using a VMC are left blank too.
I too would love to know about this. I'm playing games off of a 1tb HDD, but I've been using the FMCB memory card.
GT4
OutRun2
OP here, I have read all the comments so far an I'm taking notes. There's a chance I might have to swap games in the future since 1TB isn't enough for a 6th gen console, but I'll save the suggestions regardless.
Warship Gunner 2
Growlanser 2
Nightshade
Urban Reign
Tengai if you like shmups.
Boku no Natsuyasumi 2

Evil Dead: Regeneration
I'm currently playing Digital Devils. I'm liking it. It's a standard JRPG in the Shin Megami Tensin style. It's not complicated but it's satisfying and it has a really good atmosphere to it, a really oppressive atmosphere like an early 90s R-rated anime, like Grey or Angel Cop. So far the plot has been intriguing.
Do games with disc swap features, like Dynasty Warriors Xtreme Legends, work with OPL?
On mine:
Deus Ex
FF X, X-2, XII
Oni (sheer kino this one)
Star Wars Battlefront (1&2)
Star Wars Bounty Hunter
Zone of the Enders (2 better than OG tbh)
Armored Core 2 & 3, also Last Raven
Gundam Vs Z Gundam (also Seed Destiny II Renpou vs Zaft if you don't mind speaking Jap)
Front Mission IV and V (do NOT miss V. Seriously just don't)
Shadow of the Colossus (better OG than HD remaster which got jankier with time)
Dragon Quest V (fansub) & VIII
Persona 3 FES
Battlefield 2
GT 4 (if you can get it working on your HDD... I can't ever get it to run on anything other than the original discs. Not ESR, not USB, not HDD, not nothing. Only game completely resistant to being copied on the system in my experience)
I have more but most 6th gen multiplatforms were better on the Xbox all things considered even if the PS2 has by far the biggest library tbh
>sheer kino this one
is it? Heard mixed opinions
It is fairly difficult and the optimisation on the PS2 is objectively rubbish but the gameplay is great. Honestly the true successor to GITS on the PSX
Escape From Monkey Island
Neo Contra
Nanobreaker
Project Eden
Chaos Legion
Extermination
lol I did this a couple of years ago and pretty much play the same 5 games. based autism me
THE BOUNCER
DAURAGONCMIKADO
Honestly you have basically enough space to have almost the entire library. It would be easier to say what not to put on there.
Just go through every list you can find, and make your own list. Every greatest PS2 games list, every hidden gems list, the Ganker recommended wiki, those "100 PS2 games in 10 minutes" videos, go through a romset and just pick all the games you've heard of or sound cool.
You've got more than enough space for that.
>Honestly you have basically enough space to have almost the entire library.
Not even close, people seem to forget how fricking massive the PS2 library is and the average game is like 4gb. But 1TB is enough for a good chunk of the great ones.
Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter
SMT Nocturne
Digital Devil Saga 1+2
Gitaroo Man
Evergrace
Way of the Samurai
Champions of Norrath
great Diablo style games
nobody ever talks about klonoa. Try them i thought they were kino
>into a 1TB SSD for my fat PS2
How good is loading games from an HDD/SSD these days? Thinking about getting a sata adapter from the chinks.
In general I've tried to move away from HDDs as much as possible because the more moving parts it has, the more things on it can fail. By contrast if an SSD doesn't fail in the first year, it's not going to fail for a very long time.
Yeah it's pretty good 96% of games just work without troubleshooting these two pages are helpful

Another tip is to use two memory cards a freemcboot card in slot 2 a save memory card in slot 1. Some games soul callibur 3 jak x veiwful Joe 2 can wipe your entire memory Card.

I like how you aren't listing what you have and you are somehow expecting us to fill the gaps.

So I managed to not be moronic and installed the IDE to SATA adapter to my HDD adapter without breaking it and got OPL working. What are some other quality modifications to do for the PS2? I have heard that a fan mod is a must since the original fan isn't all that powerful.
brook wingman ps2 is pretty good
supports over 120 controllers
Fan mod is just to lower the noise. I haven't bothered swapping mine out since it doesn't bother me.
Is the Brook adapter better than the 8bitdo one?
the original ps2 fan is too fricking loud so definitely replace it with the noctua one

By the way, after fricking finally wraping all the game transfers up, I load up OPL, run Yakuza 2. Black screen, and now from now on the console hangs on a black screen when rebooting, with or without the SSD in. Did I really just lose my PS2 at the worst possible time?
There's this hidden gem called Okami. Heh, no need to thank me

I use the opl grimdoomer build the advantages is you can format hdd as ntfs and drag and drop iso without using a tool like hdldump. Make sure your hdd is at least 5400rpm or faster im using a 6tb 5400rpm hdd occasionally it skips like a scratched cd I think the official opl builds have this now though.
that's all I can think of for now
I should mention opl builds with ntfs popstarter the ps1 emulator won't work. Also exfat only allows up to 2tb ntfs allows up to 10tb I think
avoid max payne 1 holy frick is that port bad
This is what I have, not depicted is a huge collection of demo discs, and some of the Buzz! games that I only bring out on family gatherings, not games I play on my own.
Ignore the few demo discs that are in the list and it comes out to 1.02TB
I think this is the wrong approach OP. It's good to have an archive of games, but you should drag them out one at a time depending on what you actually want to play in that moment, and commit to just a couple of games until you finish them, then move onto the next. Otherwise you'll end up doing what a lot of people do and just fire up random games for a few minutes and never finish any of them.
