I want to emphasize active traversal, the reason games like nu-zelda and death standing work despite 90% of gameplay being fricking walking is that I'm actively considering the train and my provisions when walking around. I'm making thousands of micro-decisions every time I set out on a delivery run, or in dragons dogma the enjoyment is derived from considering how far I'm travelling, what I'll encounter on my travel, what I'll encounter when I arrive at my destination, what time and how difficult do I want to make my journey in exchange for being better equipped at my destination.
exploration in a exploration based RPG shouldn't just be holding down W and seeing the sights, it should be a resource management meta-gane ala Dragons Dogma or it should be a process of hundreds of micro-decisions like Death Standing

you have to program all npcs to have schedules throughout the day and you have to give all items in the world unique physics and the ability for your character to pick it up, throw it, place it etc. or else it won't be immersive enough.
