Lonesome Road is even worse than I remembered. Why was it so much worse than DM and OWB, despite having far more build up and presumably more dev time? Ulysses is the shittiest, most moronic character in the game.
It was rushed beyond relief, you could tell Avelone really wanted to tell the bear bull man's story but he was forced to compartmentalize it for a 4 hour DLC.
Whoever wrote ED-E's story was both more motivated and less spiteful.

On the topic of Avellone, how many other "this fictional universe fricking sucks and i'm going to tell you exactly how and why for 3 hours" characters has he written, other than Kreia and Ulysses? Does he have them in every game he was lead designer/at least significantly involved in?
They had a limit on the total number of voice lines they could record across all 4 DLCs. They tried to compensate by adding 2 mute characters (Christine and that one Big Mountain scientist) but were still almost at the limit when they started on Lonesome Road so they couldn't include anything except Ulysses ranting at you, even if they wanted to.
On top of that they didn't really know what to do with him as a character so the DLC changed writers a bunch of times midway through development and the end result was Ulysses coming across as an incoherent schizo.
He was originally going to be the designated Legion companion for the base game, but Obsidian found out too late that he had too many voice lines to fit on the disk, more than double Cass's total (around 615 for Cass, around 1500 for Ulysses).
As such, they had to drop him from the base game entirely and just bring him back later in LR when they knew the hard limit for voice lines.

dead money is actually way easier if you play it as early as possible because the ghost people fold like paper to weapons you don't even have the skill to use like bear trap fists and the police pistol. you will miss some minor stuff and alternate routes without certain skills high enough but it doesn't matter for a second+ playthrough where you know what you're doing.
lonesome road is pretty doable early on except for having to cheese the final fight and deathclaws and you can break the economy early this way if you want.
old world blues is piss easy if you just put a few points into strength/melee so you don't run out of ammo and honest hearts is easy early level too if you cheese the bigger geckos and yao guai. tbh the only reason to bother waiting for higher levels or not just going straight to them for cool loot is missing content that requires skill checks.

I never killed any named characters because they don't respawn so maybe the generic characters don't mean shit to the grand scheme. NCR uniforms were a great supplement for repairing 2nd hand combat armor that I could flip for profit so it was always worth killing a few around the Fiend's territory. Chalk those losses up to some expert raider sharpshooters.
Yes and no. I used a lot of mods last playthrough so I'm not sure if that influenced much but sometimes you'll lose rep even if you're [HIDDEN] when you use a loud weapon, the only guns that let you do a sneak kill without alerting everyone and lessening your rep are the shitty .22 silenced pistol and the GRA 10mm SMG. Melee sneak attacks never let you lose rep so that's why Unarmed/Melee + Sneak are a great combo if you wanna pull stuff like that
The suppressed sniper rifle should still count in this regard. You just need to make your first shot count. If it comes to the crunch you can always sell off the dogtags and ears to bump up the numbers again or simply have the New Vegas pardon in the bank should you need to go full clean slate. The later is always better once you nuked Drywells and the Long 15 just to see both sides seethe impotently as they hand you their commendations.
I always play it vanilla unmodded what am I actually missing out on? And no I don't want to frick people or corpses or any other weird shit you gays do.

Lonesome Road is even worse than I remembered. Why was it so much worse than DM and OWB, despite having far more build up and presumably more dev time? Ulysses is the shittiest, most moronic character in the game.

They had a limit on the total number of voice lines they could record across all 4 DLCs. They tried to compensate by adding 2 mute characters (Christine and that one Big Mountain scientist) but were still almost at the limit when they started on Lonesome Road so they couldn't include anything except Ulysses ranting at you, even if they wanted to.
On top of that they didn't really know what to do with him as a character so the DLC changed writers a bunch of times midway through development and the end result was Ulysses coming across as an incoherent schizo.

He was originally going to be the designated Legion companion for the base game, but Obsidian found out too late that he had too many voice lines to fit on the disk, more than double Cass's total (around 615 for Cass, around 1500 for Ulysses).
As such, they had to drop him from the base game entirely and just bring him back later in LR when they knew the hard limit for voice lines.

The differences in gameplay didn't really matter to me. I was fully immersed in the world, enjoying the exploration, atmosphere, detail, and all that.
TTW is the best way. You can play all of the decent sidequests from FO3 and then go over to the Mojave for a non-shit MQ
Who here has played NV's DLCs in recommended level order instead of release order?
dead money is actually way easier if you play it as early as possible because the ghost people fold like paper to weapons you don't even have the skill to use like bear trap fists and the police pistol. you will miss some minor stuff and alternate routes without certain skills high enough but it doesn't matter for a second+ playthrough where you know what you're doing.
lonesome road is pretty doable early on except for having to cheese the final fight and deathclaws and you can break the economy early this way if you want.
old world blues is piss easy if you just put a few points into strength/melee so you don't run out of ammo and honest hearts is easy early level too if you cheese the bigger geckos and yao guai. tbh the only reason to bother waiting for higher levels or not just going straight to them for cool loot is missing content that requires skill checks.

I've had good experiences with the Viva New Vegas modlist. Had like 2-3 crashes total on my last playthrough. There's a TTW version too
Probably best to look at a guide for the initial setup stuff and seeing if there is better alternatives, like avoiding Project Nevada and such. But man I love the visor overlay.
The issue is largely a crash, but not during a loading screen or what not. I am talking with shit not loading in right with the pink and black errors. I am going to chalk it up to me being stupid and trying to have too much big stuff.

Yeah this is why it's best to play NV mostly vanilla with fixes and some light QoL modding. Almost every time I see people complaining about NV crashing it's because they have 6 gorillion /k/ autism and anime tiddies mods installed.
It's mostly /k/ autism for me. That and trying to get new world spaces to play nice, like the Zion Trail and Beyond Boulder Dome.
Smut mods take me out the game way too much for me to actually enjoy it. If I want porn I'll play Koikatsu.

I always skipped this step because I trusted in the additional tools and unofficial patches from VNV to do their fricking jobs and make the game work better.
Of course the game would still crash, but never as often as roughly 5 minutes. Even so, I didn't mind because the crashes are pretty much part of NV's identity at this point.
My game died because of LODGEN, don't use it.
After you do make sure to go into steamapps and set appmanifest_22380.acf to READ-ONLY to stop them from breaking all your mods with whatever bullshit update they're about to push

Also, be sure to get Fist of Rawr from a hidden Deathclaw in Lonesome road, it's my favorite unarmed weapon and it kicks ass if your build leans into crits

I don't like using armor unless there's at least some level of roleplay involved, like Boone gifting you a spare 1st Recon Beret.
Faction armor is kind of useless since pretty much all named characters can see through your disguise.

I never killed any named characters because they don't respawn so maybe the generic characters don't mean shit to the grand scheme. NCR uniforms were a great supplement for repairing 2nd hand combat armor that I could flip for profit so it was always worth killing a few around the Fiend's territory. Chalk those losses up to some expert raider sharpshooters.

Yes and no. I used a lot of mods last playthrough so I'm not sure if that influenced much but sometimes you'll lose rep even if you're [HIDDEN] when you use a loud weapon, the only guns that let you do a sneak kill without alerting everyone and lessening your rep are the shitty .22 silenced pistol and the GRA 10mm SMG. Melee sneak attacks never let you lose rep so that's why Unarmed/Melee + Sneak are a great combo if you wanna pull stuff like that
The suppressed sniper rifle should still count in this regard. You just need to make your first shot count. If it comes to the crunch you can always sell off the dogtags and ears to bump up the numbers again or simply have the New Vegas pardon in the bank should you need to go full clean slate. The later is always better once you nuked Drywells and the Long 15 just to see both sides seethe impotently as they hand you their commendations.
I just used the space suit for like the whole game.
