It's irrefutable for TotK but I disagree about BotW. The best part about that game was seeing the world for the first time, making accidental discoveries and getting side tracked. Discovering the mystery behind Ganon's incarnation was cool too, but TotK ruined that by just making it Ganondorf again.

I put something like 350 hours into BOTW and I think 200 into TOTK. I fell in love with the art style, concepts, world design, and whatever scraps of lore there are. But even after sinking all that time of my life into these two zelda games I just don't feel like I'll ever really play them a second time. The hard truth for me at least, is that I find the actual gameplay boring. Doesn't matter if I'm trying to do a quest or fight a boss or explore or whatever, I just don't find myself actually having. fun. I'll always keep the fond memories of them, especially the beginning and endings of both games. I want the next zelda game to be less open-world, less "emergent gameplay". the reason I want another linear zelda is thats just what works. solving a puzzle feels good when it has an intended solution that requires clever thinking. sure I enjoyed improvising my own wack solutions in shrines and such but after a while it can often boil down to the same small pocket of tricks that can cheese a wide variety of problems. this doesn't mean i want a zelda smaller in scale, it just means the emergent open world stuff had its fun but it also inhibited some of the core things that made previous zelda entries so great

If we still had a seperation between mobile and console games and games didn't take so long to make it wouldn't be nearly so bad. We'd at least get some nre 2Dish shit or something and it wouldnt take a decade for 2 games to be released. I guess there was that LA remake but I hated it and it was just a remake....
Well, a link between worlds came out and we got that links awakening remake so at least they still care to some degree. even cadence of hyrule respected that type of Zelda game quite a lot. My best guess is they'll do what Sonic and Mario are both doing. Mainline 3d games once or MAYBE twice a console generation, classic/2d titles in between developed by a side team or outsourced to other studios

I posted something similar in an earlier thread today, but during the mid-2010s, the PS4 was dominating sales, and things looked grim for Nintendo. This was when all of the GOLDFACE NEVER EVER and WHIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRR spamming began. So when the Switch was revealed and announced, people genuinely thought that the Switch was doomed to fail and would force Nintendo to go third-party. But that didn't happen. Instead, the Switch has been a huge success, thanks in part to having a strong launch year, including BotW as a launch title. So my theory is that BotW reminds these shitposters about how wrong they were, and it broke their brains.

Ocarina of Time is a really good game
While I have problem with open world shit in general, I feel like the transition for Elden Ring was orders of magnitudes more graceful, the fundamental difference between it and BoTW is that Fromsoft didn't forget about core parts of the experience which made their games great, there are still "legacy dungeons" which are essentially old souls level, with their great level design and exploration intact, if not magnified in the case of something Leyndell which connects so much cool shit together and just seems to keep going
meanwhile BoTW threw the baby out with the bathwater, anyone that says shrines are anywhere near comparable is either a moron or simply coping, the simplistic "puzzles", the bring your son/daughter to work vibe of their design, their scatterbrained ideas that are never meaningfully developed, their samey sterile tileset, all that compounds into a gaping hole for the experience, and no, TotK didn't meaningfully improve on this either
I will never stop singing the praises of Oracle Zelda dungeon design. They may not have been aesthetically pleasing, but I can't remember a puzzle or dungeon that I didn't like in those games. Even Jabu Jabu's Belly made me feel smart once you figure out the procedure you're supposed to go through (making rooms flooded or not, then following through on a very specific path to get to properly opened doors).

I think there'd be a lot less criticisms if BotW/TotK actually put serious effort into their dungeons. Like imagine designing a world bigger than every previous Zelda combined and only having 4 dungeons (that don't even feel quite like dungeons). I would absolutely sacrifice all 120 shrines and 900 korok seeds just to have 8-10 dungeons.
The sad part is that Fujibayashi directed the Oracle games and BotW/TotK. He started his Zelda career making games with peak dungeons and now he make games where the dungeons are an afterthought. Maybe I'm giving too much credit to one guy and there was some supergenius employee at Flagship who disappeared into the night, but I think BotW/TotK's design is a result of the higher-ups (namely Aonuma) and Fujibayashi is basically a yes-man.

People got excited about BOTW with good reason, the game built a foundation that got people's imaginations running wild with the possibilities for the future.
Then TOTK was released 6 years later and people discovered that there were no possibilities for the future other than pure repetition of the same shit over and over again.
TOTK single-handedly collapsed all the hype that BOTW had built up. Quite a feat, given that BOTW was such a culturally relevant game. People don't even want to remember that TOTK happened and the only discussion left here and pretty much anywhere is gayArthur VS Erictroony.
