For people who care about lore & story, it's probably a step up from modern WoW. At the very least, there's an easily identifiable, iconic flagship character who represents the game, and everyone can agree that this character is the de facto leader. Ask WoW fans who they think the most recognizable character from WoW is, and they'll probably say Arthas, but he's currently barely relevant. Star Wars is suffering, in part, because it has too many characters that absolutely nobody gives a shit about.

I played on famfrit from the ARR beta all the way up until HW. Initially, the games world was captivating and people really interacted with each other. Doing hunts and FATEs were great. I loved going to deep into higher level zones just to explore. Id slap stone skin on everyone I meet and randomly heal people I saw slapping mobs.
The game was still adding loads of features and there was a ton the devs discussed, but it never got fleshed out. They realized the game could be more profitable if it wasn’t an MMO

Was playing the free trial and enjoying the story but then I thought to myself "nobody has talked to me and I haven't talked to anyone" and as an MMO that felt wrong. I absolutely loved Endwalker and consider it a phenomenal finale to the storyline we've been following till now. It struck me perfectly enough that the weaknesses didn't even matter.
I think your mileage will depend on how invested you are in the characters, and storyline though. If you're invested you'll probably love it (with one big exception for people that spent 2-5years nursing moronic headcanon), if you're less invested then it may not land as strongly.
You should absolutely finish the ShB Trials and Eden Raid series before you do it. Bozja and the Nier raid aren't important, you can do them later. There's payoff if you've done the HW Alliance Raid, SB Trials and some other side content though.

Depends on the people, I've had a tonne of fun playing FFXIV with my old IRL buddy. We do roulettes together, help with things like raids, or farming shit, or Eureka/Bozja. But more it's just added a lot for us to talk about, the world, the characters, the storyline- things we agree or disagree on. We went through the MSQ separately, but I've had a lot more fun than I would have just playing by myself.

It will be kino if it manages to strike a good balance between the chill beach vacation adventures, the exploratory expedition and the actual big threat part, letting each have their adequate time and breathing room. It would be pretty easier to mess it up by making the vacation part really just one cutscene before any comfy vibes are ruined, or extending it so far that watching Scions sip wienertails gets boring and then the villain comes out of fricking nowhere because it had no time for set up.
But, I do have faith it'll turn out well. Unlike every expansion until now, they're not actually building on top of 1.0 and it's directionless plot elements that they had to write a whole story for from scratch and improvising on the march. Now's the time we see if letting the newbie team write every 6.X patch to let the seniors decide the future with time actually pays off.

Yeah, low level gameplay is kind of a problem. And I'm not sure how it can be fixed. The 2 solutions employed in the industry is allowing you to level up freely, giving you more skills, and adding some sort of level scaling so that you dont lose them at lower levels, and level syncing.
I still think syncing works a bit better because scales usually implies in your level progression being absolutely botched by forcing you to fight essentially the same mobs the entire game with no sense of progression. At least that's how it feels in WoW to me.
And I think they made XIV too easy early on. It was a bit more interesting before they "reworked" the dungeons in the last few patches. Early game dungeons are so boring now.
As for the jobs themselves, idk. Most games with a long level class progression dont feel that good early on. The only solution would be no longer increasing the level cap, adding the new abilities as usual and pushing the older ones down the level chain.

Is the combat supposed to feel delayed or is the lag actually real? I'm eu playing on na servers and it feels like the damage tracking is like an almost second delayed like in fricking Gantz, I shoot someone with my bow and they take damage a second later
Yes it waits for the animation to play out before it gives you flying text but your actual damage applies immediately, you can verify this yourself by using OGCDs and other instant-cast abilties that'll cancel your attack's animation. Forcing the animation to move to another one will make the flying text and "applied damage" appear instantly. You get used to it, unless you're too used to WoW in which case God help you, this is a sink or swim moment.

In seriousness though, those infested rooms typically have four chests alongside a lot of enemies. If they were all mimics, you used an Alteration pomander the floor before, so be careful.
PotD is a complete cakewalk until floors 150 onwards
i didn't use an alteration, i ran out of safety/strength/steel/lust/sight and tried to farm for those on one floor since I had a spare fortune to use...

I find that other teams just waste time targeting me and my mitigation and self sustain is strong enough to just live through it while I stun whoever my team is targeting on the GCD to kill them. This pretty much repeats throughout the fight and whenever I'm low I just run with my team to the crystal and pop the LB and again the enemy team just wastes dps on me. Works surprisingly well. Feels like I can carry teams to victory quite comfortable as long as they're not completely braindead.
I'd play the game but part finder and high end content scares me. Plus by the time I come back and get my footing I'm burnt out again.

Frankly, as a recovering WoW gay (quit post-Legion), I think giving this game a little MoP spin would be interesting (basically setting this expansion to be more exploration/adventure based) and using the next one to really focus on the massive stakes
If 7.0 is low stakes I full expect power level gays to shit up the threads complaining that the expansion is "meaningless".
power level gays always forget that for the VAST majority of major boss fights WoL has plot armor, mcguffins or help from others.
A low stakes expansion would only work in a sandbox mmo though. In a story focused one it would be the equivalent of a beach episode, and the game isn't funny or sexy enough to make that entertaining.
I feel like a "ramp up" expansion to start setting up the next arc is a necessary step after ending off a ten year arc. Jumping straight into more cosmic horror shit immediately after the last one would be the kind of moronic shit WoW would do.
There still needs to be a final boss. Like sure maybe we won't find out who exactly woke up the world serpent but we still need to beat up a big snake in the end.

Low stakes compared to what we've had in the last couple of expansions is just a regional conflict instead of aa world ending threat. And no, the lizard king dude is not gonna be the final boss, at least not without absorbing some ancient evil and transforming into some 40 story tall abortion.

The purple cpu fan ruins and Eliminator deconfirmed it (thank god). The slice of life shit will hopefully be limited to a couple of gay cutscenes at the start where they eat tacos and cum.
I agree that it should have a proper villain set up, but I think it's best if they don't reveal their cards too quickly, and maybe have like a "1st line" of villains to kill before moving on to the higher stakes next expansion. Hopefully they can start setting up the real shit in the patches, while initially it still will seem like more of an exploration/adventure experience.
They advertised it as a low-stakes expansion. The opening cinematic for Dawntrail has G'raha eating a papaya, Urianger sipping a wienertail, etc.

I've been going through the earlier chapters recently, so thinking about how much of a prominent role Yugiri had, which is now gone. Ysayle, who's now dead. Lyse, who had almost the entire SB MSQ showing her character (including 3 separate heart to heart's with the WoL) and now never appears for anything. Venat and Zero who were introduced and removed in the same expansion. We're lucky to still have Alisaie around, it's nuts.

Alisaie absolutely does screech and get mad af, way more than anyone else, including Y'shtola who usually does it as a gag about sassiness more than a gag about violence. Y'shtola has never once actually physically threatened anyone (and no, threatening to shrink or spank WoL aren't real threats, that's just teasing), we have seen Alisaie grab Alphinaud and shake him around, or try to yell all up in Estinien's face, or that time she also got absolutely buttmad if you lost the hunting competition to her. Only reason she hasn't kicked WoL's shins yet is that WoL still has the "never touch anyone, think of the lalafells" curse.

You barely have to do any additional leveling to hit cap just running through the MSQs. I recall doing a total of one additional dungeon run on the entire run up to 90.
People only spam FATEs to rank up the dumb shared FATE system, leveling up a secondary job is a bonus.
FFXIV would be infinitely better if they let people completely opt out of the MSQ when they create a character. The current MSQ skipping mechanism is utterly idiotic because it only lets you skip to the first quest of the newest expansion. Why make players skip 80% of the MSQ play through the the last 20% of it? They'd understand nothing at all.
Do other games let you opt out of the main game and just play the boss battles on a first playthrough?
The story skips are one of the top selling items on the cash shop. Why would they give it to you for free?
I agree that it doesn't make much sense for it to stop at the beginning of the latest expansion though.
They want people to have to play through at least some of the content to
1. Squeeze a bit more potential sub money

2. Make sure you don't have players that have literally never played a single mote of content bumbling into max level instances

I mean you still can skip most cutscenes, and the MSQ does force you to run through the current expansion areas, so it's still a decent introduction to the endgame hubs etc if you're completely new. It kinda makes sense to me.

That's fair, but we should have the option. Currently we have 4 healers all with the same 30s dot and 1.5s filler GCD, and only a little bit of extra spice. Even the healing tools don't feel particularly distinct.
If you look at any other role (except maybe tanks), there's a diversity of playstyles all coexisting. It's particularly good in magical dps: SMN is very easy to play but has small optimisations around when you place your hardcasts; RDM has a really satisfying feel with dualcast and procs, and also some gauge management; BLM is a turret with tons of complexity.
I'd like if one healer was easy like SMN, it should probably be WHM because it already is easy. Then the others can have more interesting rotations. Even WAR's 1-2-3 1-2-4 spam fell cleave is miles more interesting than anything healers have.
It's not really a DPS rotation but I feel like AST card management is pretty neat compared to... nothing. Too bad they already promised ANOTHER AST rework so we probably lose that too.
I don't like it personally playing on controller but it is a neat concept. But the buffs feel really limp at only 3%
Astro had buffs that mattered instead of every card being dinkly damage up for a few seconds

not sure if nin is more active in its rotation, it certainly is more than reaper wouldn't be able to tell you for sam but you'll be doing less damage than both of those (but helping out the party more with mug)

The story was going somewhere when Forodola attacked the rebel base but then I got sent to Kugane and am now stuck doing favors for the pirates kn the ruby sea. And the game being self aware that we always go and fo quests for people doesn't make it any less tedious.
I really like SB, but it'll depend a lot on how invested you are with hating Garleans. The first act where you're walking through and seeing all the shit they cause really got to me, and I loved the heart2heart's with Lyse. It's flawed, but the beautiful zones, the wonderful dungeons and all the improvements in gameplay really made me love it.
I do have some investment on beating the garleans through all the subtext shit they're mentioned to have done in ARR, and also in liberating Ala Mhigo through the monk quests. I'll power through this part thenz see if they get me invested in Doma besides wanting to backshot Yugiri.
Also, Yotsuyu is pretty and her EN VA sells her well.

Then you'll probably like it well enough. The story picks up a bit in Doma and the Azem Steppe is especially good, if you can appreciate what they're doing with Lyse's character, and enjoy the idea of pushing the Garleans out of Ala Mhigo you'll have fun. And it gets really, really good in the patch content.
The HW patch content was pretty mediocre after you beat Nidhogg imo, but the SB stuff is all absolutely fantastic. ShB Patch Content > SB Patch Content > ARR Patch Content > EW Patch Content imo.

SB, for whatever else it is, is full of top tier waifu's too. There's two more premium Auri girls in the Ruby Sea, a very fun Xaella in the steppe, a sweet nerd (that gets ruined by Bozja, whhhyyyy) in the AR series, and more too. Bozja is unironically the best content I’ve played in any modern mmo and peak SOUL. Other games should have copied it, it’s the correct way to do the power reset treadmill, and DRS is the most fun content in the game.
