No, not at all. They're the worst party in the entire franchise, and that's saying something when XV exists. 12 is a game that you play if you like the gameplay. The story is just straight up dogshit, which is pretty funny considering how much time is spent sitting through fricking cutscenes.

They're awful, absolutely awful. Prompto's entire fricking story happens off screen: you run into him in the final dungeon where he randomly tells you he was actually a robot all along or some shit completely out of nowhere and then your party just goes "uh, okay?" and moves on. Gladio spergs out at Noctis for being upset that his fricking wife is dead but he's also le funny cup noodles man, and halfway through the game he fricks off from the party and literally says "if you wanna know what happened buy the dlc!" when he gets back. Ignis is literally nothing, I actually couldn't tell you anything about him. The party is fricking awful.

Story is bad because there are parts when you can VISIBILY tell it's missing and game just shuttles you from dungeon to dungeon. I think until 15's infamous development it was 12 that was the most blatantly unfinished entry in the core series.

Squall and Rinoa are literally the only characters with any sort of notable personality in 8 which was my point. Everyone else is just...there. Like there's something like there's 6 more guys and it's hard to name almost anything about them beyond some very VERY surface stuff.

Basch is more central to the plot since he interacts with the b***h that isn't Penelo and Fran. Penelo is just there as a sidekick to Vaan and was kinda OP in the original.
Overall the cast is terrible and despite the small size the only one that gets the spotlight is Basch and the what's her face.

This is sort of the thing though. All those "Heart to hearts" with Ashe or any other character probably would have been better served by literally any other character. Vann is not only superfluous but he actually gets in the way of other characters because as the "main" character he has to DO something but what he does DO comes off as more token MC pep talks that probably would have been more meaningful with literally any other character. So Van isn't just pointless he actually gets in the way. You could have some shit with Balthier and Bashe sort of acting as Ashe's shoulder angels about her sense of duty and responsibility.
Even his "LEADING MAN" shtick gets old kind of fast. It's funny at first to see him just style on Vann but then it just gets sort of sad.
Certain scenes only work because Vaan is a representative of the average poorgay in Ivalice. He serves to remind people like Ashe and Basch who exactly they're fighting for/their actions effect.

It's cool imo that Vaan becomes irrel after the first few hours. It's like you're a fly on the wall, a passenger with front row seats on this crazy ride. Like, you're this forgotten part of history beating the shit out of bosses and the history books don't remember your name. But you know what REALLY happened.
It has the same problem as FF10 where you can remove the player character, Titus in 10 and Vaan/Penelo here, and you don't have to change anything except cut out the totally overly long intro tutorial sequence.

I sort of disagree. I feel like if you removed Tidus all you'd really get rid of are the dumber points of the story. You'd have to doctor the script a bit but it can work. A summoner following her fathers footsteps to sacrifice herself for the greater good is a fine plot all on it's own. You can still explore the truth about sin, the futility of the sacrifice and the corruption of the world. You can just as easily change the script to account for the loss of Tidus and Jecht. The only thing that really hinges on Tidus is all that "dream of the faith" bullshit which was fricking stupid anyways. I don't know why FF always thinks it needs to have some asinine swerve or plot twist in the story when you can easily just tell something more straight forward and effective.

Except the plot doesn't change completely. The dream shit always felt tacked on. It's all just an excuse for Tidus's wacky adventure when the core of the game and world would feel more genuine if focused on Yuna's wild ride. The core of the adventure is about Yuna's pilgrimage not Tidus's daddy issues and also dream ghosts because that makes sense.

12 also has really good lore and setting. And then there's the bestiary. I mean the game connects the evolutionary history of Dinosaurs to Dragons and it all manages to work.

FFXII is another dev disaster from Square. Its not finished, Matsuno ditched development half way in. The company was pretty much burning down at the time. Its tragic really. I loved FFT so much.
