I’m looking to get into Total War, as I played a bit of Shogun 2 with a buddy when I was hanging out with him a while back and was rather intrigued by it. Quite simply, what’s the best one to start with? I would prefer a non-Warhammer one, as I’m just more interested in historical warfare than WH stuff, albeit I’m not sure which historical one to choose. Empire looked appealing, as I like line battles, early rifles, and that general era of combat, but at the same time I’ve heard Empire was a bit lacking in some areas, and I heard from one guy that it was pretty outdated. So, do you guys have any ideas? The Roman or Attila ones looked pretty cool too.

pick a game that looks interesting and play it. its not that fricking hard.
I just wanted to know what other people would suggest. Sorry
Empire has a great campaign but terrible battles. Napoleon fixes all of the issues with Empire's battles but has a mediocre campaign.
For beginner-friendly TW games it depends on how far back you're willing to go. Rome 1 and Medieval 2 are the classics but they're *very* old. Shogun 2 is solid but showing its age.
Of the more modern games, Rome 2 is probably the best one to start with. Attila is fantastic but it's more challenging and not beginner friendly at all, so don't pick it as your first foray into the genre.
>but showing its age.
What are you talking about it literally looks and plays better than any of the newer games Black person
>Rome 2 is probably the best one to start with
No, no, no, no, NO!
>please only play 20 year old 32bit games with unfixed bugs and shitty phone game remasters because the new ones are different :<
No.
>Rome 2
Well, he's not wrong, it's a simpler game than other titles and easy to get into
In a way he's right. Rome 2 is shit, and Attila is enormously overrated since it carries all of the battle-related issues and many of the campaign-related issues as Rome 2 since it's just a DLC they decided to sell as a standalone game, but if you're going to be sticking with the Total War series moving forward, you might as well start with Rome 2 since every game since has carried its problems. I don't believe Total War will ever unfrick itself, so you'd only want to start with the actually good titles if you're prepared to accept that the series stopped being good several titles in.
RTW 1
Mind if I save that picture?
>Empire looked appealing, as I like line battles, early rifles, and that general era of combat,
Empire or fall of the samurai, use darthmod for both. darthmod is generally vanilla+.
Second this anon, Empire with Darthmod is one of my favourites. Most of the biggest issues are fixed.
The bloated recruitment roster makes it unplayable
That's one of the things I like about it. It's only a problem in custom battles.
FOTS with Darth is great.
Accuracy actually changes with range, stamina is more important, guns finally outrange bows, naval battles are more interesting.
I recommend you also take artillery rework, that adds howitzers, horse pulled artillery and mortars
start with the greeks, ie play rome 1 (not the remaster), alternatively medieval 2
Shogun 2 or Medieval 2 for starting out. Then, empire, rome 2, warhammer and attila for a next game.
Why the frick would you recommend anyone play Empire Total War
If you only ever play one total war game, make it Shogun 2 (including Fall of the Samurai). It's pretty much the best the series has to offer unless you love the fantasy and hero-based system of Warhammer.
Medieval 2 is good for starting out.
Rome 1 or Rome 1 Remastered if you want to go the extra mile afterwards.
Empire is shit, better pirate it and use mods on it.
Napoleon is good, it's very enjoyable, good pick if you want to start out.
Shogun 2 is fantastic, goes well with Fall of the Samurai you can't go wrong with it.
Atilla is veeery good and it's the /vst/ favorite but it's kind of hard and you can easily frick up if you aren't careful.
Rome 2 is gay and has the worst battles, play it only for the mods.
The rest are reskins of Rome 2, don't recommend them.
so have you tried any yet?
Everything prior to Rome II. I haven't played Atilla though and it's supposed to be not like Rome II where it's basically irrelevant what tactical approach to battle you take as long as you get the strongest NUMBERS in your army.
It really depends on what period you’re most interested in. But definitely don’t play anything after Attila. Attila and Rome 2 aren’t good tactically because of the new engine but it’s still salvageable for a good time. Nothing after them is salvageable.
I’ve played Napoleon, Empire, Attila, Shogun 2, and Rome 2.
They were all fun in their own ways. Shogun 2 was probably the most polished and tactically complex of them all. Fall of the Samurai was great and mods are good. Empire is still a buggy piece of shit but there are some mods that make it fun, like empire 2. Rome 2 is pretty boring and Attila is better than Rome 2.
At the end of the day, they all have a huge modding scene and mods make them all better.
>I’m looking to get into Total War
So why not go to one of the threads already up? Frick you subhumans making a whole thread to ask one moronic question
Empire has some frustrating rough edges in the actual battles, Napoleon smooths these over but removes some of the stuff that makes Empire really compelling on the campaign map. Both go on sale regularly for cheap and are both worth picking up and experimenting with imo. If you're a line battles guy you'll probably end up loving one of them and merely liking the other.
Shogun 2 was my first Total War and has a lot to like. Probably the tightest battlefield command I've seen from the series so far. Fall of the Samurai is also well worth your money as it's in a totally different era with much different units. May as well be a different game altogether.
Anyway anon, I'm sorry you got so much abuse here and hope it doesn't sap your enthusiasm for the franchise.
I'd consider Shogun 2 FOTS the best, especially with Darthmod, and it was my first TW as well. Medieval 2 is widely considered the other contender for best entry, but I've never really been able to get into it. Warhammer 1 and especially 2 are very good, but very different from historically based total wars (as is 3 Kingdoms). I'd say the most important thing is to stay away from the latest entry (Pharaoh) and anything with the Sagas label. get one of the older games on sale and see how much you like it.
Attila was my first, only Shogun 2 and its standalone expansion can compete with it
Napoleon for battles, for campaign, Medieval 2.
