There's not a lot of "hidden" games that are truly "gems", but Gunple is among them for sure. Have you played Marvelous on the SuFami yet? It's another Zelda knock-off, only difference is its actually made by Nintendo, and directed by Aonuma. The guy was such a massive Zelda fan that when he made his first game at Nintendo, he just made Link to the Past practically 1:1. You'd think a place that built its name on reputation would've disliked this, but he impressed the right people and right after Marvelous, they gave him the keys to Zelda and he made Ocarina of Time.
I've never even heard of that! I will definitely pick it up and add it to the list. I love Aonuma, it sounds like a good time.
I have that one sitting in my backlog bin. There's actually two games, the first is on PC Engine.

Does it really spell it that way in the rom's header? I was thinking "Ganpuru" (or "GunProo") is just a Japanese-style abbreviation of Gunman's Proof, like Pocket Monsters and Pokemon.
Perhaps "Gunple" in the hypothetical header is an attempt to romanize "Ganpuru/Gunproo"?

"Gunple" is probably just a translation error from before localization was taken all that seriously. Katakana "re" and "ru" look fairly similar so it's possible some inattentive translator read it as "Gunpure" and assumed it was meant to be read as "Gunplay", given the "R" in Japanese is a bit closer to an "L" than English R so it's used when translating an English L into Japanese.
Alright just realized the image I grabbed from google is moronic and uses "re" for リ and "reh" for レ so I should probably clarify: I'm saying レ (re) looks similar to ル (ru) if you're not paying attention or don't know much about the language, and miss the line on the left

Seems to me that a Japanese developer might be familiar with English orthography (hence a "silent e" of the "le" in the "ル") but was unfamiliar as to how to do so the way a native English speaker would.

But katakana is not only used to write foreign words but also to emphasize words or to stylize them (sorry if I sound pedantic, just trying to be clear).
So, if stylization is the goal (to make "Ganpuru" a marketable name in the hopes of the "Gunman's Proof franchise' catching on (again, for the same way the term "Pokemon" was created for Japanese audiences)), then why can't someone have read katakana for an abbreviation of Gunman's Proof and just misromanized it? The common "R"/"L confusion and all.

if you google gunman's proof and scroll down the first page of results, you'll see a mix of "gunpuru" and "gunple" from a ton of different websites. probably some idiot misread it 20 years ago in some forum post and the wrong romanization has stuck around since

I guess that makes more sense than my hypothesis about the Japanese developer being behind "gunple". Not saying you're definitely right, but I can see how you came to that conclusion: you don't have to be an expert at Japanese to label a rom header or to exhibit Dunning-Kruger's.
The "ple" part comes from Elpeo Ple from ZZ Gundam. Her name is a reference to a e-girl magazine called L People, so her name is pronounced Erupii Puru. Ple or puru in Ganpuru is obviously supposed to be short for proof, but they transliterated like Ple from Gundam because the Japanese don't know English.
That's a massive fricking stretch especially considering "ple" as the intended romanization was never implied anywhere on official Jap materials. Seems way more likely that some guy on the internet tried to translate it without knowing much Japanese

Another cartoony hidden gem adventure game is Spike McFang. The 'camera' is sort of nauseating though.
Only downside ive found playing this last year was, its too easy.
