Shmups don't take nearly as long to develop as RPGs and they already have the engine for the game. All that's needed is some minor updates and model work.
The closest we ever got was Kingdom Hearts 3 because apparently the Einhander guy did the Gummi Ships and you can get an Einhander ship and do an Einhander secret boss. It even has a new arrangement of Thermosphere but if you use the Einhander ship it plays the original PS1 version.

These Black folk brought back the original team that made the game to make an elaborate cameo in Kingdom Hearts 3 instead of making a new game.

On the PS2... R-Type Final is the closest. Border Down is also alright but none is on the same level as Einhander.

the camera angle switching tends to frick you up and I don't find the game stand out in the genre, what do you all like about it?
The gummi ship sections in Klingon Hearts 2 could have been tweaked as an ok successor or completely new IP.
