I'm thinking about playing the ps1 version of Diablo, I know its inferior to the PC version, but if it holds up well enough to give me a decent experience then I'll go ahead and play it. What's the general verdict on this port?

I haven't given it a full playthrough but it's pretty interesting if you're a Diablo fan. I think it does well considering the controller and hardware.
It is the first version I played. I beat it when I was a kid. I did abuse duping magic books and stuff with memory cards, and the 10+1 blocks this game required was a b***h.
The spellbook which allows you to pause and choose spells in the middle of a battle is useful. The auto aiming is okay. The game looks fine on a CRT TV.
I see no reason not to play it, especially if you've already beaten the PC version.
prepare for tinny ear raping sound
It is how I played it. It's good. Only problem is it takes forever to save the game. On emulator it's not an issue
It's a very impressive port, and it has couch co-op too, very awesome
It works pretty well, and back in the day it was cool to have 2 player Diablo with splitscreen, but today you can play DevilutionX on PC (as well as a whole damn host of ports to other hardware, even fricking Amiga computers), and that has online multiplayer support as well gamepad support. It also supports the Hellfire expansion but with important bugfixes, and has some comfortable "QoL" options if you want them, which includes the ability to have the singleplayer quests in multiplayer, which not even the original PC release did.
So, unless you have very specific nostalgia for playing Diablo 1 on PSX with your bro (which is entirely understandable), I want to suggest trying DevX. Otherwise, if you've already experienced PC Diablo, it's interesting just to see the ways it differs, and it's still Diablo, so it's still pretty fun.
is the gamepad support on that as good as the ps1 port? needs to feel as good or the menu especially
The interface is a bit different because it's built around the original PC version, but it's pretty good. You can rebind buttons freely and what not.
It's basically a perfect port of the vanilla game, with a few added features like a turbo mode. Only drawbacks is it's a memory card hog and it takes forever to load maps.
I just beat it last year. It plays totally fine and was a solid little game, just prepare for your thumb to be really tired as the game is literally just spamming X for however long it is.
you aren't gonna play it anyway who cares
I played it today and enjoyed it, semen swallower.
I don't remember if it was an emulation thing or just how the PS1 version is built, but when I last played the PS1 version music would mute whenever a character was talking. It actually adds a ton to the atmosphere with some of the conversations (the dying townsperson at the start of the game for example)
This is no longer fun

You got what you deserved.
Avoiding melee with Sorcerer is paramount, especially crowd scenes, you get stunlocked so easy and you can't whack or smack for shit.
And yeah, be wary of trusting who you'll find down in the labyrinth.
Mana Shield gives you all the hitpoints you'll need. Sorcerer has the most magic, the most mana, can learn the highest levels of spells (meaning more damage and lower cost, basically making spells barely viable for other classes completely viable), casts the fastest, and gets much more mana out of small mana potions.
You'll crumble very easy in melee unless you're way higher level than the opponent, but you can cast so much and so fast that it's easy to keep fiends at bay.
There's also the additional strategy of wringing out crap staves, you might find one which isn't anything special, but hey there, it has 50 something charges of Fire Bolt or Lightning, you can use those up in the moment for no cost in mana, and when it's empty, you use the Staff Recharge skill on it. It'll lose some charge capacity that way, but you weren't gonna keep it, so continue wringing free magic out of it until it's dry and ruined.
What is the point, in case you are able to play the PC version? Serious question.
I hate using keyboard and mouse to game.
DevilutionX has gamepad support. Hell, the default button layout is more or less the same as the PlayStation version.
Like said, check out DevilutionX, it lets you play Diablo on PC with a gamepad, basically modeled after the PSX port's controls.
the op in d1 is amazon/rogue. You get your ranged spam nonstop while still having survivable hitpoints
both the PS1 and DevX versions play on PS Vita, which has cross platform multiplayer with 3DS and PC
The first time I played D1 was the PS1 version on a PSP.
Played the shit out of D2 on PC though.
Diablo 2 is so good, it's one of those games you have to return to every few years.
I did
My first Diablo game experience
The game sucks, but was fun for about two hours
for me its the best version to play on halloween night. otherwise id go with devx
It's great. Getting away from mouse controls is a killer feature, and worth the other compromises alone. The drops are also easier to get good items.
turning the knights on level 16 into skeletons is an interesting change, it gives holy bolt some use after cats beyond pulling diablo. In fact knights could have been undead to begin with.
