Literally the only dogs I kill is those on the fake key collar balcony. I do it with the pistol too since there's herbs you can only use there so I don't mind taking damage. After that I throw the pistol into the box and never touch it again for the rest of the game. I don't shoot a single dog ever again either

You get it soon before the courtyards which is when the dogs first appear, and they appear in groups and move quickly from side to side. It's simple game design. Of course if you know the map layout you can just run by them, but what's the point of shooting them with the pistol when you have the other options?

I love the old concept art for RE, but the art style of the characters is a total mismatch for the style and tone of the game. The humans look like they're shounen JRPG characters cosplaying as law enforcement.

I always thought this aspect of the original game was kind of cool. Reading the manual made the STARS felt like this superhero crime-fighting squad. Then spend the next few hours seeing them torn apart in horrific ways.

Part of me wonders if Isao even knew that most of the STARS members were going to be gruesomely killed offscreen when designing them. The amount of effort that was put into giving them all distinct visual designs really makes it feel like they expected more to be done with them.

That's an interesting way to think about it., like a loss of innocence sort of thing, where the designs are what you'd expect from a cheery T-rated game where the good guys always come out on top, but then in the actual game they're more realistically rendered (literally in the intro movie, and relatively speaking during gameplay) and for the most part are unceremoniously mutilated by zombies.

Its a video game. They need to look like identifiable characters. However it would be kind of cool if they had unlockable costume or extra that made all the characters have a uniform look like you'd obviously expect from a police force such as stars.

I’m always torn. I love REmake’s unmatched sense of atmosphere, and the crimson heads + Lisa really make the mansion grounds feel so much more dynamic. I’m not a fan of the fact that every puzzle seems to have an additional item shoehorned in. OG RE feels very snappy, but REmake is sloooow.

I mostly agree. I think Lisa is a cool concept, and shows another fricked up aspect of Umbrella. But she's so trivial and adds a lot of extra wandering back and forth.
The underground has not her and the hunters and she's just not a threat and is actually hurt by the contrast to hunters which are a threat.

      >Yes, I ageee. At the end of the day, the reality is that REmake 1 is a perfect example of "would have done this if the tech was advanced enough".
morons need to stop saying this.
REmake is in no way what the original people involved intended. The colours are completely changed despite the ones present in the PSX game being what was intended from the earliest concept art when the game was going to be a first person shooter.
If they had "advanced enough tech", here's how RE1 would've gone.
      >First person shooter, no fixed cameras
      >Partner AI following you
      >Guardhouse would be equivalent in size to the mansion
      >Several other areas including a chapel, tower, and boathouse (plus surrounding lake)
      >More characters who can survive or die
Among many other things. REmake is not at all going by "original intention"- how could it when most of the key staff weren't present during its development?

Weird because ever since the remaster to this game dropped back in like 2014 the consensus has been overwhelmingly that REmake is better and even replaces the original. I disagree but this does seem to be the majority consensus on the game. I see it as more of a Halloween themed version of RE1.

I think most people haven't played either, but probably less have played the original at this point, and probably even less have played both and really thought about it.
It's a nerd topic to actually play both and try to do your own analysis, almost no one does that type of stuff. Which sucks, because I do and then no one wants to talk about it.

You do know the mainline RE games all sold really well right? Plenty of people played them to have a solid opinion on the games. RE1 was such a massive success they tried rushing RE2 which still ended up coming out very soon after RE1 anyways.

      Anonymous

It's only been recently that I've seen the claim that the original RE is better than the remake, mostly in the art department. I can see where they're coming, since the mansion does look far too run down in the remake. That said, the voice acting...oof

It's actually really interesting playing the original again after years of only playing the remake. Despite Trevor and the Crimsonheads throwing in some really creepy new stuff, the original is different enough from the remake in the minute details that you get a pretty interesting experience. I can't see why a player of either would take such a strong stance against either one as to never play the other.

I agree. Replaying games is a great experience, like rereading books. You appreciate them in a different way. Old games are great for that because they tend to be pretty short, which benefits replays.

You do know the mainline RE games all sold really well right? Plenty of people played them to have a solid opinion on the games. RE1 was such a massive success they tried rushing RE2 which still ended up coming out very soon after RE1 anyways.

Sure. I don't know if you have numbers, but here's some from Wikipedia:
        > All PlayStation versions of the game have sold a combined 5.08 million units worldwide.

And here's from the REmakes Wikipedia page:
        > In May 2008, Capcom revealed that a total of 1.35 million copies of the game were sold
Maybe we could double that number since the release of the PC version in 2014, plus emulation plus whatever.

So, what I'm talking about is someone who played both, which is going to be less than the sales of either game, so we're already in a small population of people. They then played both, relatively closely in time to each other. And then did so while trying to sort of critically compare them, which most people don't do in general because most people don't critically consume media.
How many people do you think fit this criteria? A couple thousand?

REmake has been my favorite video game since it first came out, and I'm about to do another Real Survival run for Halloween. I like the original too, but I think REmake is a straight upgrade.

The only thing that drags remake down for me is that visually it's just so fricking boring. It's such a generic setting that even with all the improvements to the puzzles and stuff, I just never have any interest in replaying it.

        Anonymous

I was absolutely blown away by the visuals back then, but I can see how you might find them too drab. The original is certainly a lot more colorful.

          Anonymous

It's not that it's drab, it's just that it's such a straightforward horror aesthetic compared to the original's cheesiness and colors. I think the latter lets the survival horror shine, while the remake tries to kind of clumsily rope in a more typical horror with it.

Normally analog sticks are atrocious for classic RE but it's actually decent on GC because the stick has an octagonal gate. So the GC d-pad being horrible isn't that big of a deal

Playing resident evil is analog is never fine. The octagon analog gate on the analog stick does nothing for tank controls, the purpose of the octagonal gate was to be able to flick the stick in one of 8 directions fast as possible. In other words made for games with full range of motion. Like if you are about to fall off a tiny platform Mario Sunshine and need to rapidly adjust, you can flick the analog. Resident evil you are only pressing 4 directions. Unless you are playing the entire game flicking the stick. The gate is useless.

          >Resident evil you are only pressing 4 directions
Anon, I usually play with a keyboard and you use 8 directions. Up and right together is a direction. You can turn right while moving forward. There’s 8 possible ways to move

            Anonymous

Pretending to be moronic gets you nowhere, using 2 keys on your keyboard does not magically make a 3rd key. You can only choose to move 4 directions what you do with the keys together does not replicate Mario's ability to move in which ever direction he pleases with a pull of the analog. Trying playing Crash 1, then Croc, and tell me they're the same.
