Idk about best but I'd say that every Sony "movie game" is written better than this. The Uncharted series is a better story for example.

The problem is the available writing talent; shit on boomers all you want but they were talented story tellers. Millennials are the first generation of humans to suffer max exposure to the internet and social media, a condition that often causes an individual to "outsource" their critical thinking and opinion forming skills to the great other, the "consensus." This phenomena degrades the ability of millenial writers to imagine things that exist outside of their own mind and the always online loop it is hooked up to. All characters and dialogue are marked by the peculiarities of this generation, no matter how out of place they are. Every moment of gravitas must be broken up with a witty quip, the ubiquitous "that happened" moment. Storytelling conventions that have been refined by our ancestors over the course of generations are tropes that MUST be subverted. Anybody who reaches maturity while still holding onto the empathy and conceptualization required to create entire worlds that do NOT reflect one's own immediate surroundings is too smart to write stories for looney troon videogame devs. Additionally, videogames are one of the first industries to have been touched by the ESG ghoul, and the utter lack of talent here is a sneak-preview of what your pilots, doctors, and politicians will be like in another few years.

You don't need top tier vidya to be written better than BG3. Anything that isn't full of trash dialogue and prose is better by default. The only stuff you can say this is better than is maybe some modern trash trying to be mature like the nuGoW games, or really bad Japanese games like XB2.

It's a pretty mediocre and buggy CRPG with a ton of missing or unfinished content. Why people are so obsessed about it that it has very high quality production values and cinematic dialogue.

Gale was the consort of a goddess, did you even play the game? They changed the awful dialogue options for him that only allowed your character to drool over him or scorn him, no middle ground. They admitted as much in the patchnotes.

Part one is decent. Part two is really good. Part two end/part three reveals that the plot is actually The Prequel Trilogy plot except carried out by three people who hate eachother instead of one senator and it is much worse than part two but not bad per se.

This is honestly one of my biggest gripes with the writing. You're telling me this girl that's super closed-off, who takes a bunch of time to warm up to you and build a deeper connection is totally fine with you cheating on her and having threeways right after the two of you have sex for the first time? Its such blatant kink wish fulfillment that it ruins the character. I actually quite enjoyed her character arc before I found out about all this shit. There's genuine depth to it, especially if you've known people that have been in abusive relationships (whether that be with a partner, family or religion) and pick up on some of the more subtle signs. The actual character building and romance was clearly written by someone who knew what they were doing and took great care to write an interesting character, but Larian just has to frick it up with their fetishes. Josh Sawyer was fricking right.

D&D games were already moving towards multiplayer "tabletop simulator" elements entirely because they realized BG1 and Planescape were flukes and they just couldn't write good CRPGs to save their lives.
The mechanics aren't bad, the setting isn't bad, but D&D has never tried to be anything more than quirky nerd slop.
Play indie RPGs is you want serious stuff. Maybe even Pathfinder but it's themes will never amount to more than "D&D for contrarians"

D&D is fantasy pulp, every game doesn't need to be the next Planescape. However, there is an objective bar between good writing and bad writing. Whether the story and characters are deep and poignant or simplistic and generic, good writing enhances the player experience, bad writing detracts from it. This new era of millenial-trite, the marvel-esque quips and "humorous" dialogue options is trash.

Truth is, in no uncertain terms, D&D basically invented the quirky nerd stereotype. They were making cringeworthy slop and it's fan subculture was encouraging players to game the DM and make the characters as quirky and witty since forever, because whacky shit and torturing the DM by ruining his carefully crafted setting was always a better social experience than taking it seriously

Why would you bother? I had like 80k by the time I stepped into Act 3, money's worthless anyway since you will have a character with sleight of hand for chests/doors/traps and wizards rolled pickpocketing into it so you can steal everything in the game trivially easily.

Writing quality aside, what kills me about the game is how it doesn't take itself seriously for more than 5 mins, so how am I expected to take it seriously? I have zero investment in the story because of that, so I don't care what happens or what I'm doing.
