nobody cares about the setting. You do 1-2 weeks story depending on how much you play while leveling and then its over.
The basic issue of the game is the playerbase gets only older while they implement chores. Nobody has time or tolerance for their bullshit so they quit. ff isnt even good but you can pause playing for months without getting punished so any casual tolerates mediocre gameplay for the convenience of not having to grind anything.

Anon, only XI, XIV and the mobile games are any grindy. It's also primarily an RPG series, so of course you can pause for months and pick it back up.
i was talking about their ff mmo... its literally boring but 0 grind which makes it perfect for casuals who want a "30min mmo experience" playing a raid boss and logging off.
Finding people to raid with has always been pain but it became a increasingly bigger issue in wow with added system to grind and scores people watch to decide if they let you join. Even fricking lfr will tell you to get gear first before they let you in.
tldr: people have less time and thus cant tolerate their chores gating content they would actually want to play.

there is no gear grind, no artifact power, no nothing. Past leveling you can play anything even if you dont play for months. The only thing you have is optional grind for weapon skins and other bullshit for people who want something to nolive but its beside the point when all you want it casual dungeon / raid.
You have a weekly tome and raid cap you have to grind and it resets every major update
You're competing with your own group who can only get 1 piece each rather than getting lucky with rng, so gearing ends up being pretty quick. Tome gear is also mostly for catchup, so it being gated doesn't slow you down very much. There are absolutely some grinds and timesinks, but they're offset by other systems that make it very easy to just jump back in whenever you want.

I wouldn't say died, but there was some very fricking stupid decisions that really ruined the more grounded and reasonable feeling the vanilla world had by adding in shitty gimmicks. Like that one zone being shaped like the horde symbol on the map or random permanent tornados in early zones. It sorta made sense back when Cata was relevant but now they're just stupid eyesores. Every expansion has this issue of course where it's stuck in time, but it's less of an issue for them because you have to go out of your way to visit.
The old world being changed to allow flight was fine, and the cata zones are some of my favourites too. But they needed to reign it in.
