I was Apex Predator in 2 seasons in Apex Legends before I quit. I was Master in LoL.

Swathes of custom dedicated servers have players in them and not just bots and tournaments have team entires in hundreds which creates the tierings naturally. I'd say it would be harder to manufacture the idea that CS is still popular video game than it is to just, you know, being popular. I enrolled back in uni, and no other game immediately got local player groups and 10man lobbies with the same volume as CS does. People still play it because it's pretty fun, not necessarily because other people play it.

I would count the overall health of community side and organic player retention, and the speed of matchmaking lobby filling as tertiary sources. If you compare to other games it's somewhat rare to get a ELO/MMR based matchmaking lobby as quickly as you get in CS if you don't have the actual player numbers behind it. Secondary sources, for me, would be tournaments and esports side as a whole, and I'm ready to trust most of the numbers on that side since they are, for the most part, not Valve controlled.
And yes, practically everyone who posts numbers are using steamAPI as a source. I don't believe there even exists a crawler capable of going through all of the community servers for players.
Oh sure, it's healthy being sceptical when platform providers send unaudited numbers out, but it's also very easy to sound absolutely unhinged when the doubt goes towards a game or service which literally everyone knows or uses and there is secondary and tertiary sources of evidence to support the numbers.

Valve isnt a skeleton crew, they got tons of people. The problem is because they have the system of no managers and everyone being able to do whatever they want, they spend years just trying out random shit and building gameplay/hardware prototypes, and actually only committing to something once they are 100% satisfied with it.
