I just beat the game, was really nice. They really refined the whole JRPG experience from 7, and the game is also filled to the brim with content. Story-wise, i think i prefer 7's because it felt a lot more personal for Ichiban. I was especially kind of dissapointed in the final bosses, Ebina doesn't look like he should fight as well as he does (although to be fair this is a common complaint about most yakuza final bosses) and Bryce was especially dissapointing because i really, really wish the game would completely ham it up and have him become an avatar of his goddess during the fight or something. I mean why not, i fought a fricking kraken 10 minutes ago, just chalk it up to Ichiban's delusions.
I enjoyed it too, but I really wish they revamped rpg systems in next one. Job system is just too shallow. Less classes but give the classes talent trees or something.
Also for fricks sake no more secondary protagonists, kinda ruins the ending when kiryu gets both final fight and final scene. Just make him a supporting character like in 7 again.
Agreed on both fronts. I think they're just afraid of getting rid of Kiryu, like they don't trust Ichiban enough to carry the franchise. As for the jobs, they really should make them feel more unique. 90% of the jobs feel like they do exactly the same thing but with different element types. And even within jobs sometimes there's weird overlap, like you get 5 different grapples that deal medium damage, why the frick do you even need that

You also gain absolutely nothing outside of it telling you you befriended everyone for getting all 200 buddies, only 200 friends. Picture related is your reward for 200 friends along with a small cutscene about Wesker. If you didn't do all 200 by the start of chapter 5 you're wasting your time for the reward itself.

As far as I understand it's just for getting duplicates of one-time items, fighting harder enemies/bosses, and the enormous increase in EXP/JP/Money from fights. Basic mook fights essentially become Invested Vagabond-tier in terms of what you get. I think it also has an exclusive store or store expansion like 7 did with Fumie's black market store. Otherwise everything can be done in NG.

Any attack with the fist icon, which makes up a lot of attacks in the game. Every base class except Seonhee and Zhao are blunt for their basic attacks.

Honestly I'd buy a full dondoko island game if they fleshed it out a bit more. There are an absolutely insane amount of diy items as is for the amount of room you actually get on the island. You only get access to them after a really long time, and once you get them you have to go to a million different stores to get gear for them, and probably the worst thing is that I just felt absolutely no need to try them. Everyone feels best with their default jobs.

All males are samurai and all females are kunoichi. Kunoichi spam Substitution Jutsu with the best samurai spamming Burning Arrow (or whatever the AOE gun ability for samurai is called). Fast leveling, quick fights, and lots of item/money farming for level seven weapons.

the hybrid classes are a step up from the others but their weapons are kind of bad. I wonder if 'more phys damage when full hp' is better than 'greatly buffs attack when you defeat an enemy' since Pyrodancer and Aqua seem pretty tied in usefulness as a base

No. I'm using level 50 Sujimon, and even though the supposed stats are 800+, the damage is far less than basic Samurai abilities.
One guy a day or two ago did the math and equipping a level 50 Sujimon that gives you 999 stats is only increasing your damage by like 30%. It also can't equip weapons leading it to be one of the worst jobs in the games because even low level jobs with like 4* weapons do more damage than it.
What were they thinking with this job man? Literally ALL they had to do was let you summon the fricking sujimon into battle. THEY ALREADY HAVE MOVESETS RGGS YOU USELESS FRICKS

been playing it off and on since a little before xmas last year. decided to just commit to it a few days ago.
just finished chapter 9. probably would have finished this chapter sooner but i decided to just playthrough that business management minigame because someone told me i should have tons of money before i reach a certain point of the story.
game is fun but i really want to just get through the story. which i heard is also a bad idea because the game will randomly get super hard later on. so far its generally been a breeze for me and i hardly did any grinding.
it's not hard, iirc the only time you need to do any grinding is right after they introduce the dungeon and they specifically tell you to go grind for a bit. don't burn yourself out on the terrible 7 combat and just finish it

The Stardust guys literally ask whether there is a 'shred of evidence' that suggests Kiryu is alive. The first time is in a sidequest. Previously Akiyama discovered Kiryu was still alive and decided to set him up to meet with Haruka again. So he invites Haruka and Kiryu to Serena, and Kiryu reluctantly agrees to go meet them there.
However, just when Kiryu is going to meet them, he overhears Haruka and Akiyama talking at the door and Haruka says that while it would be good if Kiryu was alive it would also be sad for her because she'd feel too dependent on him and she was just learning to walk on her own two feet. Kiryu hears this and ghosts the meeting instead.
She comes back at the end of the game, but only to walk in on Kiryu's empty hospital bed with her son while he's in another room talking with a doctor. The two never meet or interact.

Speedrunning isn't something I like. Portal was like the only time I ever liked doing anything time-trial related outside of racing games. To this day I have yet to get that Braid speedrunning achievement despite like six attempts and each attempt felt like work.
Challenge run videos for 7 are fun to watch though like that one guy who did only Ichiban and lowest level. I don't really care about no hit stuff even though it's skillful. It's just not for me really.

I'm also trying to get a copy of every Sujimon that looks exactly like the Dossier which is proving to be fairly annoying, especially since there's no locking Sujimon so you have to be extra careful.

It took me 10 hours just to get out of chapters 1 and 2 due to the minigames. Chapter 3 was like 30 hours. Chapter 4 was like 10 hours. Chapter 5 has been 10 hours so far.

I bought a copy of all the accessories and weapons I could from those shops. I'm not buying the books or cans that have an infinite amount, just the finite ones. You get the job books randomly through those crown fights so I'll have them all eventually through natural progression (I hope). Only thing I tapped out on was poker for the claws because I know there's gonna be some better way to earn chips since Yokohama's poker is low rate and I assumed 4 friends might give more.

Yep, friends poker pays out a lot more. Still you're looking at a lot more time with the game if you haven't even started Dondoko yet. Fortunately the side stuff kind of tapers off after that, I think you've been introduced to everything substantial now

Yeah, I know. Right now it's fill out the Sujimon dossier + get exact copies of the dossier pictures (I've got like 60% of them exactly as they are in the pictures though I don't think the Penalty Boxer permutation exists at all with the clean shaven face but also tanned guy) mixed with grinding out the coliseum so I can buy their store out. After that it's Dondoko Island for like 16 hours or however long the completion list will take. Then it's normal progression until the split at which point I start on Kiryu's completion list which I'm sure is another 20 hours of minigames.
I plan on doing 99 in all jobs on NG+ Legend and doing another 100% run on NG+ Legend which should go by way quicker since I would have the lists and all the minigames done on both sides outside of the friends and photo stuff again. Plus, it means getting duplicates of items you could only get from substories or from the dungeons.
Right now I got Ichiban at 55% of the list, though I haven't bought everything in the restaurants out because I'd rather just party chat when I have everyone in PA.

I'd recommend waiting until you're in the finale waiting period before bothering with a lot of the grinding stuff (aside from Dondoko) since by that time you'll have full access to all of the party chats and hidden talk events since you'll have everyone, plus all the dungeon stuff will be open and relatively easy once you get the initial boost from the Dondoko completion cash.

Someone linked it months ago in some threads but i can't find the video anymore. it was in a stream where she just ranted about it in japanese and was clearly pissed off about not being able to get her cake and fully eat it too. Cause the prize for the contest she took place in was to have an appearance in Y8 and gaiden was some sort of consolation prize for the other girls not making it in by giving them all spots as hostesses... but then they decided to also pick one of the contest girls as the face of one of the supporting characters, Akame in this case, and Kson was pissed off about this "last minute change" cause she expected to be given that spot on a silver platter as well.
She wasn't happy purely with the contest already being rigged in her favor and that she actually won it, thus allowing her to have the spot of hostess in Gaiden AND an appearance in Y7 as a background character. She also wanted the spot for the supporting character in Gaiden.
Nah, she was just confused about what the deal was with Uika being at the auditions. It later turned out that Uika wasn't supposed to be at the auditions in the first place, she already had that role but there had been a miscommunication.
I was rolling my eyes at how over the top Akame and Shishido looked but by the end I was totally in love with them, great casting choices
I think they kinda made the game too long. The game should've wrapped up soon after finding Akane.
I finished the game a few days ago and I've practically forgotten most of the main story beats since so much of it was moronic filler stuff, same issue 7 had but even worse because at least that game had a very satisfying conclusion
