The turn-based combat has already overstayed its welcome, and the island and sujinon shit sucks. The story is especially bad, even for Yakuza standards.
I'd take turn-based combat for another 10 entries over brawlershit. The first 3 games especially were suffering in terms of actual combat.

Realistically, how many games does Ichiban have in him before he gets canned? The fact that they brought Kiryu back and gave him the spotlight in Ichiban's 2nd game shows that they clearly aren't confident in his ability to carry a game on his own (Kiryu got 3 games to himself before he had to share screentime, and even in 4 he was still clearly the top dog). 8 saw Ichiban's character take such a fricking nosedive that I wouldn't at all be surprised if 9 was his last game.
On a similar note, how do the japs feel about him? I'm pretty sure Gaiden and both Judgements outsold 7 in Japan, but I'm not sure if that's indicative of a dislike for Ichiban or a dislike for the change in gameplay.
I don't think Kiryu came back because the team isn't confident in Ichiban, but just because they can't let go of Kiryu themselves. Fans refuse to let go of Kiryu too and continue to beg for more games with Kiryu. All the Bucket List stuff in 8 feels like a loving way to send off Kiryu, who got such an unsatisfying "end" in 6 that fans refused to accept. If Kiryu isn't retired in 9, I'll regret defending the team, but at this point I honestly feel like he will be retired. 8's developments for Kiryu feel like the only part of the game that will actually be relevant to the next game.
Do you really want to develop the team after Yokoyama went on record talking about how the story evolved in such a way that he had no choice but to shoehorn in Kiryu (it's totally not to bait in fans), when the Daidoji are in reality almost totally disconnected from the plot and their inclusion itself feels jarring

Tomi gets to be the star of the big showdown with Dwight, and Chitose gets to be the star when dealing with Eiji in Hawaii and Bryce on Nele.
I don't think Ichiban was "flandarized" so much as he was just never the most important character in any fight or action scene. The camera is only ever centered on Ichiban during scenes about trust/friendship.

How come they never deviated again with Goro? Yakuza 0 is amazing simply because of Majima and Kiryu dual plot was really engaging. Yakuza rarely ages up the characters, and if they do, they do it to enough of a degree that people won't be turned off. Even Majima, Daigo, and Saejima are back to looking how they did way back in Yakuza 5 and before by the end of 8.

How would everyone feel if the next game confirmed that Ichiban was just playing the fool here because he knew that Eiji needed to feel like he had a friend in order to turn over a new leaf? Ichiban says to Kiryu earlier in the game in regards to Tomizawa "it's easy to tell when someone needs a friend", and Ichiban is also well aware now (after Masato) that people become desperate and dangerous when they feel alone. Would it help at all with your perception of Ichiban to find out that he extends his friendship to people he knows don't really deserve it, just to give them the strength they need to change?

Honestly started out as one of my least favorite in the series, but then entered into my top4 by the end of it.
I've only played the first Judgment and thought the story was okay but I actually didn't really like the combat that much. It might sound strange but it was too "fluid" for my liking Hitting punch slid me across the street to hit the other guy standing over there. I genuinely prefer some of the rigidity of the earlier Yakuza games like 4. Is Lost Judgment any better?
Combat wise yes. Story starts great but drags after a certain event but gets good again in the end. The last boss has worse presentation and set up than the last boss of the previous game but is better in other things.

I just finished Yakuza 8 and as someone who absolutely hated 7 I think this one is better overall. The gameplay has a lot of little things added to it, it's still not great but at least it's better than 7. I thought the story in 7 was moronic as frick and Ichiban kept crying, they were trying way too hard with this shit. In 8 he doesn't act too moronic except at the end (sadly). Honestly I played 8 mostly because I loved Gaiden's story and I wanted to see what happens to Kiryu, his story is okay but that fricking ending...why ? We don't even see Kiryu and Haruka together...I guess they keeping it for the beginning of the next mainline game but that's such a weird choice. Well, at least I guess the Daidoji let him go and get his real name back.
I think Ebina is good enough as a final boss but Bryce is one of the shittiest antagonist of the series and his lack of charisma really doesn't help, especially when he speaks in english (I play in nihongo tbh) the voice actor is struggling so hard it's terrible to hear. Yamai was cool though. Still one of the worst Yakuza games but I'd say it's better than 7, hopefully they don't stick with Ichiban for too long because 8 showed (again) that Kiryu is way too based and Ichiban is not the right successor.
