This is bullshit. The institute never wanted to help anyone, and also the broken mask incident was not the first synth nor was he up there by mistake. The Institute is just like the Enclave, except slightly better. The institute just wants to kill everybody who is not them. Also, they won't ever cure super mutants. Didn't they order virgil's death just because he felt bad about experimenting n innocent civilians and turning them into mindless soulless cannibalistic monsters? There's a reason you had to give vergil the serum and he had to finish it in the glowing sea where the institute could not reach him.

It's not black or white. The Institute wants to control and fix the surface world, not destroy it. Bodysnatching is done just for that. Dividing and sabotaging the surface is necessary in order to keep factions from destroying the Institute, a very realistic threat since that what you do with 3/4 factions in the game, and the super mutants are a "controlled" threat used for the same purpose.

                Anonymous

Except they show absolutely no actual interest in taking the surface and are satisfied just staying underground indefinitely, in fact their main quest revolves around just that. And no one would have cared about them or even known about them if they didn’t start fricking with people on a regular basis. Also you left out the Super mutants and the massacres.

I never said they want to conquer the surface or even move there, they're a bunch of science nerds who never held a gun in their lives, they would be killed or raped by the weakest raider gang 10 minutes after setting foot on the surface! They are happy to control things from behind the curtain while staying safe in their little idyllic hole.
                >no one would have cared about them or even known about them if they didn’t start fricking with people
Before they started fricking up with people, they tried to gather with different settlements to try and form a united government. It didn't work and they lost hope and decided they wanted nothing with anyone directly, the reasons why aren't clear, that's when they turned isolationist/manipulative.
                >you left out the Super mutants
                No I didn't

                >Before they started fricking up with people, they tried to gather with different settlements to try and form a united government
Ah the massacre at the CPG where they decided to decimate the leadership of the region because of political gridlock, totally justified and normal behavior to take
                >Necessary evil. Again, it's not black or white
Explain what massacring some back water settlement is going to do for them? Because if it’s about scaring people then that’s stupid since no one knows where they are and all it does is build resentment for them which eventually turns into organizations like the railroad forming to stop their bullshit. Or the BOS getting involved.

the insane part of this is you're not trying to claim they're a well-written faction, you're trying to claim they had any actual morality at all.
the institute if looked at as a scientific powerhouse but poorly managed with no actual end goals is a well written faction, they fit the bill as people with the means to do the right thing but neither the competence or the will to. trying to frame them as misunderstood heroes who meant well but faced backlash is a fricking insane person's take that sounds like you've never played the game at all. no part of the institute is reasonable, they have no real goals outside of father's aimless moral grandstanding and their methods are some of the dumbest shit ever (trying to win over the populace with a horde of mechanical skinwalkers instead of just regular fricking robots like the wasteland is already filled with). the only actual end goal anyone at the institute has is endless experiments like they're fricking aperture science, and thats the only angle you could take the faction in that would make them well-constructed in a meta narrative sense. anything else is just fanfiction mixed with total nonsense

The Master is eloquent and well reasoned within the information he has, but he's a famous RPG antagonist because he's incredibly, objectively wrong about everything. When he discovers the truth he's horrified and commits suicide, a narrative decision that many CRPG's have tried to emulate over the years with varying degrees of success.

He kills himself because he learns about the sterility of Super Mutants, not because his plans were wrong. He explicitly states that by turning everyone into Super Mutants, he can achieve social dominance, and be rid of pesky human beings once and for all; and he pieces this argument together through emotion and ideology of the human lifespan. People get old and die; he did not. Therefore the relationship between him and omniscience was real. His argument is easily held by not just him but by his followers at the Mariposa Military Base, and The Children of the Cathedral; one of the most basic and emphatic plot points in the entire game is based on the grounds that his argument is impenetrable.

The core of all his actions was the belief that was bringing about the next stage in evolution for humanity, one that could not only survive but thrive in the wasteland. He based this on the correct - within what he knew - evidence that super mutants were just fundamentally physically superior to humans in every possible way. Stronger, faster, more adaptable, and free of the divisions and prejudice borne of individuality. To him it was not only a moral good, but a necessity that he convert as many humans as possible into super mutants to give them new life and properly kick start the evolution. Super Mutant sterility destroys this belief. They will die off after the first generation, they're not more fit than humans, because evolution relies utterly on reproduction after the first gen. He realizes that all the atrocities he's committed were pointless, his magnum opus was a dud, and he can't justify his action, so he kills himself.

                saucy

He doesn't kill himself because he feels bad about hurting people; his entire ego is way too big to give a shit about anyone else in the story. He kills himself because he's making people sterile, which to him, is basically like cloning himself, which puts a fat wedge in the idea that he is the smartest one in the world. This is why people say The Master is an intellectual villain, because people will willingly misinterpret his courtship for humility. His ability to reason is just a facade to meditate on his narcissism, and when he realizes he's a narcissist, he does what any narcissist does and kills himself.

For fricking real. But also you forgot that you can be a spy and infiltrate all factions even if you're not railroad. Everyone will assume you're a double/triple agent and that you're on their side, while only (you) know what side you're really on. New VegACK insists on you telling them game what "side" you're on. This is because fallout 3 and 4 were real roleplaying games where the game acted as the game master and you were the player, but new vegACK tried to make you both. They tried so hard to not put anything in the "game" that would ever contradict your preplanned character story that they just ended up not making the game at all. In New VegACK it's not even possible for you to ever lose, and nothing ever throws a wrench in your way and changes your path. There's n reason to play it because all it wants is for you to be able to decide everything that happens in your own story. All you need for that shit is a pen and paper. The actual "computer program" that is new vegass is just one of those online personality tests but without the results at the ends. You type in or click on the information it asks you, and then it does fricking nothing with it. It won't even stop you from skipping ever "quest" by clicking on "speech"(which is all drones who claim to like it do) because you can just say goodbye and eat a drug and read a magazine and instantly have enough. It's not even chance based, it's just addition. It makes Them feel so smart just for doing preschool levels of math.

Maybe the memories are very inaccurate and they're nothing like the actual war but how would the synth know? It believes its memories to be 100% factual despite the fact that there may be big inaccuracies.
It's kinda like how people can convince themselves that false memories are true. Synths are human to the point they may have the same issues as us when it comes to memory and remembering if something is true or not.

              Anonymous

It doesn't matter if they're not making them anymore, the fact that they already made them and are now a growing epidemic in the Commonwealth, since Super Mutants are known for having their own ways of making more somehow, even though it should be impossible.

I didn't say it was better. I'm on your side.

On that note. Why in the HOLY FRICK are the Institute making Super Mutants? What fricking benefit is there doing so?

Originally they were failed experiments. It was when they were still trying to figure out how to use the FEV to genetically engineer human flesh for synths. Nowadays they just think the super mutants will weaken the commonwealth so they still turn people into them. It's all in terminal entries iirc.

          >super mutants in commonwealth lack their own fev
That's not true, we just never see it. If you spy on them you can hear about them searching for "green stuff". It's lines reused from Fallout 3 but it's still a thing that they do. And nick says that super mutants are one of the groups who kidnap people in the commonwealth. That's why the Chad super mutants in Fallout 3 kidnapped people, to use fev on them. It's just a thing that these creatures do, even if the fallout 4 mutants are lamer.

Dude. It's not stupid if they're experimenting and learning how to use FEV. But maybe it is stupid if they still do it because they think one or two extra mutants will make a difference. But like, what else are they going to do? They could just kill them, but they don't care about mercy even, which is why I think this is something that counts as more evil than stupid.

          Body snatching randos

That's all a part of their plan. They don't want you to forget that they replace humans with synths. Think about it, does anyone in the commonwealth ever ask whether or not their robots have been replaced? No, and the robots are the real spies. I think it's an obvious theme in the game, but that's just a headcanon. Either way it is still true that 1, they want to make the people afraid, and 2, having more synths would never hurt them. So I wouldn't say it's stupid at all. And I don't want to hear shit about wasting resources. If you go to the synth making machine in fallout 4 it runs constantly on a loop forever. Clearly they have enough of whatever they use to make synths to last a thousand lifetimes.

Except it backfires because now everyone knows of their existence and hates them, the only thing stopping people from getting to the Institute was they couldn’t find it. Different strain of FEV, and it wasn't made by a sane group of scientists. The strain of FEV at mariposa was one that could fuse different creatures together into one, and the master was some guy who ended up accidentally getting fused with a rat and a computer. As such he was crazy. And all of his own experiments were just him with no oversight and for a specific nefarious goal. It was such a different situation that it's not worth comparing, especially from the pov of the Institute who are anything but self aware. And the fev in mariposa was way more dangerous because for whatever reason it gave out psychic powers, which connected all the super mutants to the mind of the human/rat/computer guy. Fallout 1 and 2 were basically marvel sl0p, they even had constant "quips" and "jokes". And the "references" were even worse because in fallout 1 and 2 the "references" were straight up plagiarism.

Full of sex, disagreements and protests?

No, right? You'd go somewhere else, where disagreements were basically a formality and less a controlled opposition. That's basically The Institute, a place where people can learn more about the surface by engendering conflict, rather than supplementing it.

siding with the institute is moronic
why would you side with the faction that killed your wife, abducted your kid, and have generally done creepy and evil shit (as far as you know) up until you first meet with them?
the whole point of the game until that point is that you've been looking for your son and the evil bastards that took him from you
you enter the room and there he is! Except apparently it's not him and the "real" Shaun comes in through the door. But how are you supposed to know or even believe that kid Shaun is just a synth and that this old man is your son? As far as you know that's your real son you've finally found in that glass room, but for some reason he doesn't remember you and then this random old man from the evil institute you've heard so much about walks into the room and jedi mind tricks him into "shutting down". The only logical course of action from this point is to blow off the old man's head with your combat shotty and try and rescue your son from this evil place.
In no world would your player character just sit there and listen calmly to the what this random old guy has to say after what you've been through and what you are seeing in front of you.

it's the same as siding with the empire in Skyrim. Why would you care which option is better for Skyrim/tamriel long term? Why would you care who has the best chance to beat the Thalmor? The game starts with the empire trying to execute you even though you aren't on the list. Then you go through the dungeon and see their torture chambers. In what world does it make sense for you to side with the guys who tried to kill you for no reason??

Institute definitely makes the most sense if you're hardcore roleplaying the storyline
    >find your kid
    >they're alive, much older than you expected but safe underground in a place that's clean and full of the modern conveniences your character would be dearly missing after spending time on the surface
    >your kid asks you to take over for them
    Why would you say no?
Because they did some bad stuff to the surface dwellers? Those people EAT EACHOTHER. You've been up there, you've seen how bad it is.
Why would you ever turn against the institute, and your own child, and a safe and comfortable life to go back up to the surface and hang out with the fricking Railroad or the Minutemen or whatever?

the single funniest fricking thing fo4 does is make water purifiers something your character can just build out of scrap parts and plunge into a dirty old puddle and function perfectly. the entire plots of 1 and 3 made completely moronic because some dumbass in boston is macguivering the fricking things out of some ash trays and old wrenches

the water purifier in 3 was like a massive industrial-grade kind of thing that would have filtered massive bodies of water

the ones you build in 4 are smaller scale and only filter small amounts of water. You can make functioning water purifiers yourself, they're not complicated technology. It really just involves having water pass through sand or some other kind of filtration medium.

I don't think a water chip is a "good," like cast iron frying pans. It's more like a service, that people can rely on. The way we view it is as an object that a craftsman can make, when in reality, the replacement is just a chip that came from another Vault.

      >if you're hardcore rolpeplaying
You don't understand roleplaying. In Fallout 4 you can roleplay all different kinds of characters with different personalities. You're nt just supposed to base everything off of how your character acts in the intro. The intro was probably not even you but either way, that's not how bethesda games worked. The stuff in the intro changes you into whoever you choose. It "wakes you up". Also, you're not even remotely correct because going off the intro, Nate is a badass motherfricker and wouldn't side with evil just because it has fricking clean toilets. He's an american hero. Going off of his personality and backstory, he would choose the bos or the minutemen, probably both.
      >those people eat each other
You mean the super mutants which the institute created eat humans?
      >how bas it is
It's not even that bad. Compared to the institute it is beautiful, and if you think the institute somehow looks better you have no soul.
      >your own child

He didn't need you to teach him right from wrong. He had eighty years to figure that shit put on his own and there's no excuse for why he didn't. He chose not to. He chose to die.

How did he remember fighting in the war? How would Shaun have been able to simulate the moments of him on the front?

Who says he remembers that? No evidence of him remembering combat.

the dumbest thing about the Institute is when Father asks you to meet him on the roof
you go up there and he's looking down at a camp of raiders and he's like
          >I didn't realize it was this bad...
          what
it's been 80 years, you can teleport to the surface, you have cameras all over the surface, you regularly get reports from the surface agents
and you didn't realize? a camp of raiders just doing regular raider shit is shocking to you?

          That doesn't make any sense.

He didn't even look at raiders, he just looked at the cit building and cried because it was dirty or something. If you didn't decide you were going to kill him in that instant, then what the frick is going through your head? Unless you had already decided that earlier.

That was an intro cinematic, not a memory. Plus it shows a soldier, you don't know that it's him. His speech is decidedly not about him, it's about war, so it could have been any soldier. I never even considered that it might be Nate tbh. Where did you get that idea?

When Scott Peterson murdered his 8 and a half months pregnant wife on Christmas eve and dump her body in the marina in 2004, he knew that what he was doing was illegal and that he would face legal and social consequences if he found out, but he didn't actually have any problem doing it because he's a psychopath. When urban youth rob a guy and laugh about it with their friends they do it because they don't have a moral compass. Personality is a combination of nature and nurture, when you're raised in a society where there are no consequences for murder of surface dwellers (quite the opposite, you're rewarded because of muh science) then you're going to have a malformed moral compass and you are literally a moron who hasn't developed a theory of mind as a (presumed) adult

You can tell that he has a normal one and that he's just choosing to ignore it and making excuses for himself because he doesn't ant to face the truth that everything he's known was wrong. Learn media literacy or how to stop being an autist.

I went through hell to find my son. I'm not going to kill him in cold blood just because his organization has done some bad things to the surface dwellers. It was allegedly an accident (pretty sure a terminal says the CPG was a threat to monitor or some shit).
Also it's still their fault for sending a kill droid to meeting, if telsa sold a self driving car that rammed into a parade there would rightfully be consequences. The fact that they just chose to completely give up on diplomacy after an "accident" they caused is not an argument for them not being evil

                >give up on diplomacy
                the surface dwellers did too
there was no longer any chance of having meaningful or peaceful discussions with the surface because they'd made up their mind that the Institute was pure evil
why even attempt diplomacy at that point
plus - the surface dwellers have absolutely nothing to offer to the institute. No leverage, no bargaining chips, nothing to add, nothing they can even help with. They're a bunch of hicks who think the Institute is the bogeyman, what use would there be at all?
Meanwhile, contact with the surface puts the institute in direct mortal danger if any of them ever manage to figure out where they are located or how they travel to and from the institute.

Contacting the surface in good faith after the broken mask incident is a total lose-lose scenario with no benefits

                >the surface dwellers did too
Of course they did, why the frick wouldn't they? As far as they know they've just been declared war on by an invisible subversive enemy that just assassinated their whole government.
If the japs did pearl harbor by accident and decided "the americans won't want to talk this out with us" then it would absolutely be their fault for not trying to fix THEIR mistake that looks indistinguishable from a declaration of war.
They could literally just send an endless waves of cheap gen 1 and 2 synths saying "we come in peace" until someone listens, you know, the thing they're already doing except instead of saying "we come in peace" they go around killing cats and invading canneries

I like Fallout 4, it's probably my second all time favorite game, but the lighting is terrible compared to FO3. Something went really bad after Skyrim with Bethesda's lighting engine. Even Special Edition has much worse lighting. I don't understand what went wrong.

Huh? the lighting in special edition is miles better than original Skyrim's. Ditto with Fo4 comapred to Skyrim. Its only 76 that has shit lighting.

Maybe I just prefer stylized lighting. Original Skyrim had a very cold feeling which fit the setting. Similar with FO3 having an irradiated feeling vs FO4 which doesn't.

Lol, teleportation, the creation of synthetic animals and synths are universes ahead of the old BoS tech, which is not even something they created but inherited from the US military. The BoS are literal cavemen when compared with what the institute achieved in 200 years, meanwhile all the BoS can do is scrape old tech.

That shit is nothing compared to project purity or liberty prime. Plus all those examples you just gave don't really count as tech, they more count as evil.
                >inherited from the millitary

The Bos are what it looks like when Mankind has a steel grip on technology's leash, not the other way around. Why not just release the mod without audio and let other people provide the original audio in .bsa or loose file format in such a way that it can simply be dragged, dropped, and loaded by the mod?

I mean that's obviously what everyone's going to do anyway, no one wants to hear some modder's impersonation of Benny on a $15 Walmart mic (recorded outside for maximum sound quality)

That's what everybody begged them to do but they decided it would be legally perilous to release it that way, since they're basically encouraging people to mod in the audio they're not allowed to use

stay underground with their nuclear power source fueling them for hundreds or even thousands of years if need be until the surface becomes closer to habitable again and then use what they've learned and built underground to restore civilization to the surface

when you meet them, they clearly think it's still too early to save the surface (and they're right) so they resolve to stay underground as long as needed

Except they aren’t, the NCR created a functioning state in the span of one 80 years, not to mention a good amount of the issues on the surface are the institutes fault.

the institute has a tiny fraction of the manpower of the NCR
The Commonwealth is actively hostile to them, as evidenced by the fact that once they know the location of the institute they all seek to destroy it

Now is not a good time for the Institute to resurface and reveal themselves. The people are not ready. The Brotherhood is also there. Their best bet is to wait.

Virgil escaped shortly before the game began. You can find terminal entries in the FEV lab how the Institute had been continuing the experiments into modern day for seemingly no reason. This is why Virgil got angry and left.
              >When you get to Diamond City and they talk about Kellogg's house it makes no sense for this to have happened decades ago

-The old man who ordered him to turn off the Cryo pods was the then leader of the Institue.
-Shaun, the guy wondering him around, was an old man when he made that line in the diamond City flashback.

                1. They've always sought to destroy technology that can't be controlled. FEV chief among them. And synths are made using FEV
                2. Maxson's BoS is only about 500 people large across all divisions by the time of Fallout 4, they don't have the manpower to waste trying to occupy a small city like the Institute while also continuing other operations.
                3. The BoS has never cared about shit like medical or farming tech, so all of that stuff in the Institute is useless to them.
                4. Keeping it intact just leads to the possibility of the Institute survivors finding a way to reclaim ti and start shit all over again.

BoS generally doesn't care about cybernetics since Fallout 1. No one in Fo3, NV, or 4, is shown to be augmented.

There's no point leaving survivors to escape the wasteland where they'll take their research with them for someone else to benefit, especially the Enclave kind

If you're BoS there should have been an ultimatum with the scientists given bomb collars or decimated to instill fear and loyalty

Liar, they have every reason to do so, least of all for vengeance. The Institute is science being in charge of man, that can not be allowed to exist.

Yeah, the BoS is moronic, they are of the opinion that "this is all too dangerous we have to destroy it"

It is though. what are they going to do with it? There's nothing you can do with it that would help humanity, which is all the brotherhood does.

          >be Brotherhood
          >send Sole Survivor to find nukes in the Glowing Sea and in an abandoned fort
          >blow up an entire underground facility filled with tech that they can't even fathom

Why say this lie? What do you gain from it? Why do you make things up?

The BoS has every reason to blow it up
          4. Keeping it intact just leads to the possibility of the Institute survivors finding a way to reclaim ti and start shit all over again.

          >only 500 people
This isn't true, they're actually very huge.
          >never cared about medical or farming tech

          >institute survivors
They weren't as worried about them as they were of synth survivors. Elder Maxson believes that synths will one day decide that the existence of humans is no longer nessecary. And keep in kind there is no terminator movie in fallout, so he didn't just get that idea from science fiction. It's his own original idea, canonically.

Project Purity was the vanity project of elder Lyons, a guy CUT OFF from the rest of the BoS for going against their ways. Fallout 4 repeatedly mentions how Maxson rolled back Lyons' changes.

They never ever once said this shit! The ONLY thing that they said is that some people were tired of Lyon's foolish ways. The only thing we see that the brotherhood has changed is that they're better and stronger, they no longer allow civilians to have power armor(unless they're using it for good), and they take recruits. Lyons didn't take recruits which was idiotic, and more than likely the only thing they were talking about. And that wasn't a change he made, it was one he didn't make.

              >leniency towards technology such as funding rnd projects like a safer radaway or letting animals on the ship for research purposes

Tying the settlement system to one faction was their biggest mistake with the game. They even tease it with that one Railroad mission where you set up a safehouse for them on top of a settlement. Imagine how much more significant the faction choice would feel if you were brotherhood, setting up brotherhood bases and then you beat the main quest and now the roads are patrolled by the brotherhood, with brotherhood checkpoints everywhere.

Umm the bos never killed Sara, she died in battle against super mutants.
      >zoomer haircut
No, you may be blind. Plus didn't this game come out before zoomers even had their iconic look?

        Surrreee. How convenient for Maxon

Dude had a crush on her, that was anything but convenient. Also have you met Maxson? He's a hero and he believes in everything that he's doing. He's not some shady butthole who smothers people in their sleep.

Yeah, you get more options to convince him if you find a holotape from his friend.

You know, I did find that holotape. My guess is that I chose a different dialogue option for roleplaying reasons. Like I wasn't the kind of guy who shows people holotapes first before voicing my own thoughts.

Minutemen are good as the East Coast NCR equivalent. People complained about Bethesda using Enclave and BoS instead of making new factions but when they make new ones they lose their shit.

Because Bethesda writing is fricking shit.

if only minutemen looked like this
      only preston does
tbh bethesda should have given them the service rifle (ar-15)
no gay wood stock, only all black

That's actually the General's Armor you get int he Castle. You can also outfit your settlers to have minutemen outfits and hats. Mine are blue due to a great mod.

The Minutemen should have laser muskets instead of weak pipe weapons

They also need to scale when you reach certain main missions and levels

By the ending they should be all wearing Revolutionary war uniforms and have maxed out laser muskets, .50cal hunting rifles, service rifles and missile launchers

Not fair when Institute have Coursers and BoS will shit out Star Paladins

the laser musket is probably one of the worst guns ever made by Bethesda

I didn't mind the laser musket compared to some of their other abominations because I actually thought it was kind of fun to shoot.

I felt it really underwhelming, you have a slow ass reload with low damage and not the punch of a sniper rifle

A full crank shot is one of the highest damaging shots you can do with rifleman build and it's available at level 1.

    >you are an actual Pre-War Military veteran

ex-gunner, no longer associated and now just an independent merc
it's not the same as getting to interact with the whole faction
they just shoot you on sight for no reason and have zero depth to them beyong that, despite Nate being exactly the kind of person they should be interested in recruiting or taking a job from

I haven't gotten there yet but what's the deal with raider outposts? You just make a raider settlement, sacrifice another settlement to feed the raider settlement, then all the raiders there just walk around doing nothing and you can get a small amount of caps if you travel half the world over to the tribute chest? Is that it? You can't have the raider npcs raid anything or what?

Also why's even the Brotherhood even in the Commonwealth? To wipe out the Synths and Mutants? Okay for who's gain? Their own? Because we know they certainly don't give a frick about the Commonwealth or the locals of it.

Everyone in the world has literally always thought they were good. Get used to it. No matter how many times you lie and shill, you will never be able to control reality and cold hard facts will remain unmoving.
