Not anon, but I think the problem people have is the fact that they introduced all this time nonsense only to have it not change anything meaningful in the first place. So why do it at all?

I understand that, but it kind of goes against what the fans wanted in the first place. People just wanted a remake of the original game with the same storyline. If they wanted to try to avoid making things stale, but go as far as adding time ghosts, temporarily resurrecting multiple characters, temporarily killing characters, and all sorts of other stuff, they should have just removed some of their limitations and actually gone for some sweeping changes towards the end. They could have done a whole bunch of additional content without these massive changes that they already made. For example, there was nothing stopping them from referencing/cameoing Dirge characters without having to do time shenanigans. The same goes for adding extra storylines and side quests to the story. This isn't me complaining about things being changed, either, since I already accepted (and expected) that there would be more of the time stuff going on after the first game. It's just the fact that they doubled down on it with Rebirth by doing all the extra Zack stuff, only to tell us that it's effectively going to result in the same original ending...only with extra content along the way. why not just give us more than that at this point? It just feels like a wasted opportunity after coming so far. Are they just going back on their original intentions?

Except they didn't have to do that. Okay let's say that there's no meaningful changes and that everything will progress as normal. Well now instead of a fairy straightforward plot with a few mystery boxes to solve, instead you have to pull out a fricking white board to chart out the events of MULTIPLE UNIVERSES just to get to the same point of "Cloud's perception of reality has been skewed." Instead of clearing up some of the convolution of FF7's plot, they added to it

The only two meaningful changes in the story across Remake and Rebirth is Cloud thinks he saved Aerith, and Zack is fricking around somewhere in the lifestream.

His characterization is wrong and he's not the real cloud. They either have to rewrite everything again or this is still a demake.

            Anonymous

No Cloud's characterization isn't the problem. Of the long, long list of problems in this game the character writing is one highlight of the remake series. Cloud is a dork who's convinced himself he's a badass but doesn't actually have the experience of being a badass so he tries too hard which makes him come off as a dork. That's the main thing recent iterations of the character frick up and I'm glad someone finally got it right.

    https://www.frontlinejp.net/2024/04/18/final-fantasy-vii-rebirth-post-release-interview-part-6-devs-discuss-the-climax-and-the-final-game/

    >Kitase says that considering his age, the third game will likely be the last time he can be directly involved with a Final Fantasy game. While there is a possibility that the world of FF7 may continue on after it, it will be the conclusion to the series for now, and he says that he would like Cloud and the other characters to have a happy ending. There is no telling how the game will actually end until it is finished, but he personally does not want it to leave behind any unfinished business.

    >Kitase has recently passed him (nomura) a request to do something extremely important that was not in the original game, and he personally thinks it will be something very difficult to do. He is currently polishing the idea, and says that if pulled off right will be something that the fans will definitely be happy about, and so he is thinking about how to make it sound convincing

This is the worst of the worst. You get the same story but with bits here and there that only serve to undermine it. The time jannies, Zack, the timelines... None of this shit improves the original story, it only makes it worse! They ruined Aerith death for god's sake and Dyne's too. How is it possible for them to think that this is in any way better than the original? Just look at how they killed Wedge and Biggs, it was so pathetic... One gets pushed off a building by time jannies and the other gets shot in the most random and incoherent way possible for no reason! Every change has been for the worst. Some of the most iconic moments totally ruined by these moronic changes.

People are upset because of the execution. Because of all the dumb, needless fluff. If you want to change the story so that Aeris lives, they could have done that in a way that was at least remotely comprehensible or less moronic or in a way that didn't try to have its cake or eat it too with the OG stabbing scene. Square-Enix is trying to toe the line between new story and keeping things fresh while displeasing both sides of the aisle. This right here. Look I like Aerith. I like Zack. Both of them died brutal and unfair deaths. They were good people who did not deserve the ends that they got. But judging by

Trust in Kitase's happy end plan. He forced it in.

Kitase wants to follow the original plot to please purists but also give everyone happy endings to please people who like Zack and Aerith. And you can't. Their deaths are the building blocks of FF7's story. Without Zack dying, Cloud doesn't get to start his journey. Without Aerith dying, the planet doesn't get to be saved.

I absolutely believe the multiverse fate bullshit is to set aside a timeline where Zack and Aerith live but it'll be separated from our timeline so that they're dead and alive at the same time. Aerith is Schrodinger's cat now.

            Anonymous

It's also important to differentiate what people mean when they say "happy ending" in the context of FF7. When I played the OG as a little snot nosed brat back in 97, I wasn't phased at all by Aeris's death. Not even in the slightest. Probably didn't help that when I first saw it I thought the whole thing was a dream sequence, and I didn't register Sephiroth showing up and poking a hole through Aeris's belly as anything other than an umpteenth fever dream of Cloud's until after the fact. But I digress. I accepted Zack's sudden and jarring death. And I accepted Aeris's death.

What I didn't accept was that terrible ambiguous ending that provided ZERO closure to any of the characters were still standing by the time Aeris performed Lifestream jutsu on Meteor. Is that what Kitase is referring to when he says "happy ending?" I hope so.

What a thread filled with morons, holy shit.
The entire point of the trilogy of games wasnt to "remake" ff7 as in "just another replay", it was to actually make it feel like you were playing ff7 for the first time again.
Thats why the entire aerith sequence is designed the way it is. To play with you, to make you feel anxiety, expectations, so for ONE FRICKING SECOND you dont know what are you getting into, like when you were playing ff7 for the first time.
Its a noble effort, sadly they forgot to realize that ff7 "fans" in general are extremely defensive over it. They dont really care about how remake is presenting things, its just a checklist for them. The whole dyne sequence being "criticized" because "he didnt throw himself down a cliff" is proof of it. They are not playing remake as if it was a game youve never played before, they are just playing ff7 remake as a replay of the old game and get angry when its not the same.

That expectation is impossible because of the name that's on the fricking box. You don't want fans to go in with the expectation of the game being FF7? Then don't remake FF7.

Its just gonna be ff7.

Shit loads of things reminding you that it is not the first time, or are completely baffling for actual first timers.

Exactly. What they needed to do is throw in a bunch of small details that were subtle and did not match up, and left people going, "That was not in the original..." and then, at the very end on the highway do the Sephiroth reveal (and make that the first time he shows up) with the feather falling down, and then have the team fight "fate", no Sephiroth fight, and after succeeding have Sephiroth show up for the 2nd and last time with some "Just as planned" smirk and disappear. Ramza is absolutely dead. The script was pretty clear about how there was no return multiple times, Loffrey quite literally goading you about destroying the only entry and exit point, then the ship you're on immediately explodes with Ultima's defeat. Cid hasn't been seen or contacted Orran and he believes he's dead. Agrias is a ??? too.

He was seeing what he wanted to see, and Varamathra stays silent and doesn't indulge his delusion. On that tangential note, I always imagined she had her throat slit during the confrontation with Delita where he let her live, and is now mute.

It already meaningfully changed from the OG story.
I think this is a case of unfortunate translation or misunderstanding, because it's obvious what they mean is that the remake games will follow the same major beats and locations, but will still be contextually different with some very different scenarios, but ultimately still recognizable.

Aerith being dead is hardly indicative of "no changes" since the context is different. That's just some weird Aerith shipping shit that's been cropping up for a few weeks, ignore that crap.

If they were set on having the first part end with leaving Midgar and wanted some cool anime fight at the climax, one way they could they could've done it was with Roche.
He finds out that Avalance is about to leave Midgar, so he goes to Hojo and demands to get pumped full of Soldier Juice. Hojo obliges because he thinks it'd be funny, and then Roche rushes after Cloud to have final battle with his "rival."
Of course for this to be effective, they would've had to actually fricking built Roche as character through the game, to establish rivalry between him and Cloud. But I would have much rather had that than fricking Sephiroth scenes all over the place. And out of all the Nomura OCs in Remake, Roche was the least bad. I can actually buy one of the Soldiers being a motorbike obsessed weirdo.

She isn't dead in any real sense of the word. Sephiroth wouldn't say he underestimated her if all she did was die like she usually did, and her consoling Cloud was hardly worthy of Sephiroth saying that. I think what happened was Cloud really did save her, but Sephiroth merged her with a timeline where she "dies", but she manages to delay it fully happening in the until the Jenova fight ends. Hence the white timejannies that are there the whole time. She's either able to wander now between the worlds or is stuck in some kind of limbo.

For me, it's the part in Remake in the lab underneath the slums where it's so blatantly obvious they deeply want the game to be Resident Evil and they give you Barret to play and shoot things with in third person, and then later on spending 3 hours in Hojo's lab in another Resident Evil section. It clicks and makes so much sense why the tone and plot changes and additions are there when you realize they want this game to be Resident Evil.

Serious answer: working on fixing Sephiroth's brain problems. Sephiroth is fixated on Cloud because Cloud's memory keeps him as the strong independent Jenova freak that he wants to be. OO has now stated than Angeal and Genesis getting involved would destabilize his new persona because they know him far more intimately than anyone else.

If they wanted Aerith to live, all they had to do is just never have her go to the Forgotten City by herself, which was kinda dumb to begin with. You have to drastically change the next part of the history, but if that's what you want to do to have a happy ending, just fricking do it.
Even have the characters waking up and seeing her trying to leave alove be like:
    >"Yo Aerith, what the frick, you're some supportive white mage chick, what are you doing going to face Sephiroth by himself? You'll just end up being hurt...or worse. Have you seem how long his sword is?"
There, you even threw a moron allusion to the OG so morons who love rewrites and bland stories where nothing bad happens to the party think it's clever.

It's fricking moronic of them to make the story almost entirely the same as the original but more convoluted and stupid.
After Remake they should have just made Rebirth a wildly different story/game.

      pretty much this.

In the OG, it seems to me that Aerith's life was in danger if she stayed with Cloud, because he was remote-controlled by Sephiroth, so her only option was to go there alone.

        Anonymous

        >Life was in danger if she stayed with Cloud
        I agree with that impression
        >so her only option was to go there alone
I disagree with this. If the writer veemently wants to change events for her to live, split the party. Some people stay to take care of Cloud, some accompany Aerith.

          Anonymous

she would've been safe with the group because everyone else would've tried to stop Cloud, going off alone to the temple when Sephiroth knows they're trying to stop him was not a very bright move.

I agree with you, but at this point we are criticizing not just Rebirth, but also OG FF7.
I mean, how else should they push the drama?

            Anonymous

I can live with OG Aerith's decision being stupid because they wanted her to die to move the story foward in that direction. It's a narrative decision.
My point is, if the writers don't want to take the story into that dramatic narrative direction, they don't need to introduce a convoluted parallel dimension, they just need to add some social link mechanic and if Aerith caps with I don't know, three other characters, they are worried about what she might do after Cloud beats the shit out of her and stalk her the night after, catching her before she leaves and preventing her death.

It's not like the cross dimensional parry pushed the drama anyway.

this is why I laugh when they say the OG was good and Re games are bad, moronic shit was baked into the story from the start but nostalgia really makes people blind.

              Anonymous

The OG was a masterpiece. Sometimes characters in a story do things that in retrospect look dumb because you look at it with hindsight.
Aerith was just some flower girl from the slums, she really didn't think Sephiroth would find her and gut her, she thought she was just gonna pray and come back smiling and being quirky.

She thought Cloud was the most threatning thing to her at that point, so she left without him.

                >She thought Cloud was the most threatning thing to her at that point, so she left without him.
no, she was trying to protect him, all of them, by stopping his plans without really thinking things through.

Anyway, my point is that both stories have moronic shit in the but only one gets blasted all the time and that's fricking hilariously ridiculous.

This is the thing though, they had the opportunity to fix the flaws of the OG. It wasn't a perfect story. Instead we got something worse while people still vehemently defend changes they don't even like.

Well because Tifa is the reason Cloud started this journey in the first place. Both were children when their journeys started and their attraction was very surface level but the foundation was there for something to blossom. Really it was held back by the passive nature of 90s JRPG party members. If the player never used Tifa then the good moments don't hit has hard as they need to. So Remake is/ was the opportunity to make it into a slam dunk.

        >If the player never used Tifa then the good moments don't hit has hard as they need to. So Remake is/ was the opportunity to make it into a slam dunk.
People need more of a good moment than everything that happens at Mideel?
Her showing all that devotion to helping Cloud get better and helping him put himself back together again at his darkest hour is a GOAT scene and it alone is enough to make them a really really cute couple.

          Anonymous

So I need it? No. Is it nice to have it? Absolutely. For much of disc 1 and 2, Tifa is a ball of anxiety when it comes to Cloud. Between just wondering what his problem is in Midgar, to questioning if he's even the real Cloud in Cosmo Canyon, to understanding that he's truly damaged by the Northern Crater. So having more good moments where Cloud and Tifa can just care for each other or even have fun together is nice to have. And at least shows how they function together when not wading through the worst traumas of their lives

            Anonymous

Having extra scenes of them being happy and cute together is really nice, I just meant more that I think the mandatory story moments of VII already sell Cloud + Tifa really well even if you don't really keep her in party, I don't think they feel very forced if you never have her, for example

This is the best summation of this entire travesty I've ever read. Every single butthole strawmanning that OG players just wanted a 1:1 remake rather than just an updated recreation of FF7 now has to deal with the same bad faith criticism that OG players dealt with after part 1. And the only thing that sucks is that I know they were never really invested, they were just chaosgays wanting to watch FF7 burn. So now that FF7 is burning they can just walk away without caring nearly as much as the people who have been waiting for this game for nearly 30 years.

So all that's left for interpretation is who's the Aerith at the ending that the party cannot see. And the other question of can people really be revived after they died. Of course we need to factor in how the devs said they will just follow the original plot

AC is canon to VII. Meaning if they see the 500 year later scene as a bad end, AC is part of that bad end. Very simple.

All those scenes don't actually happen in AC. What happened in AC was Geostigma and Reunion. Plus the Deepground war in DoC was a much bigger shit than even Geostigma

At this point it'd be absurd if they don't deviate from the original. First, it's a goddamn stealth sequel, not a remake and the game hammers you over the head with that fact the second you saw the jannies for the first time. Second, they made so many changes, major and incidental, and left so many breadcrumbs that some major shit is going down that IF they decide to end it the same as the OG ending it would turn the Remake trilogy into the longest and most expensive shaggy dog story ever. It would be cosmically moronic. It would be Mass Effect 3's ending times 1000.

The only way she could have known this is either straight from Tifa or Aerith spilled the beans

why would tifa tell that to yuffie?

It's mandatory for girls to tell other girls who they have hots for

Yes. Aerith knows about Tifa's love. Separately Tifa told Yuffie about her coming to Midgar. Otherwise she would've said I heard from Tifa that she had a crush on you.

                >she would've said I heard from Tifa that she had a crush on you.

that's too direct. everyone that is not autistic knows you would never rat out your friend like that

                Anonymous

And another point is she wouldn't tell Yuffie. She only told Aerith because she asked and probably told her about Zack after Tifa told her the real Nibelheim story.

                Anonymous

Based on the dialogue, it seems that Yuffie has been informed by Tifa herself. The phrases “I also heard” and “Tifa said” suggest that Tifa is the source of the information Yuffie is sharing with Cloud. It’s a common narrative technique to use a character like Yuffie to reveal background details and relationships between other characters, in this case, Tifa’s past feelings for Cloud. This method of storytelling helps to build the world and character dynamics without direct exposition from the main characters involved.

What we actually know is Aerith knows. We don't know that Yuffie knows.

I want a happy ending for everyone, I also want hard mode to be even harder and a superboss that filters millions. I don't know what changes they're going to make, but I'm really looking forward to Cloud breakdown and Tifa's lifestream segment. Also hope Sephiroth doesn't just ignore Cloud after he gets the black materia.

So, they were so scared of the backlash that they practically went back on doing something new and original?
Should have just make it a 1:1 remake then.

they've been saying the game won't drastically change since the beginning

  121. 2 weeks ago

What does it matter whether Aeris is dead or not?
This fricking game makes you trudge through a sea of nonsense and confusion where anything could change at the drop of the dice and your takeaway is "yeah but is Aerith ACTUALLY dead?"
It's already over, none of this matters. You'll enjoy the wild ride up until the end of the game, and in a couple of years you'll admit that while it was fun in the moment it was just a stupid mess that ruined everything. It's like somebody shreds a $ 100 bill, and all you can do is latch onto the bit that has the number "100" on it thinking that as long as that bit is intact you can still spend it.

    Genuinely fricking moronic, incompetent clowns
    >nooo it's a reimagining look multiverse different worlds different timelines changing entire geography of the world changing scenes everywhere, entirety of sector 7's population survives, biggs/jessie etc survive, deepground active in midgar already, ruined dynes scene and character, already fought or spoken with sephiroth 17 times by the time you leave midgar
    >we only wanted to remake it if we were going to do something different just a straight remake was not something we wanted to do
    but also
    >noooo it's following the original story it's not deviating significantly despite the fact it has already deviated significantly with stupid shit constantly it's just meant to be a remake of the original
What a fricking disaster these idiots have made

Aerith is going to remain dead in the "main" timeline but is going to be alive with Zack in a different timeline. It'll be her, not some lifestream ghost Cloud talks to in Advent Children so it can be the exact same but with a forced happy ending where both are alive but just can't meaningfully interact with them.

  126. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

    >some fans thought her fate might change due to the party breaking the walls of fate
Well yeah. Why would you make a remake of a game only to throw in some shit about "breaking fate" if you aren't going to meaningfully change anything? Kitase is a brainlet, can't really blame Nomura for this because he allegedly just wanted a normal remake.

      Anonymous

Thankfully Kitase BTFO Nomura for wanting a 1:1 retread of exactly what we've all played a million times before and gave us something new

        Anonymous

Except it's not actually new. It's pointless schizo timeline stuff that does nothing but make the stuff from the original worse. It won't lead to anything cool and new, it still leads to fricking Advent Children.

        Anonymous

        >and gave us something new
i don't want anything new that's bad, moron. if you can't make it good, don't make anything new, it's real simple
a 1:1 remake is, theoretically because modern devs are incompetent, something you should not be able to frick up or ruin.

Aerith will survive for mainly gameplay reasons. Reunion will have 11 playable characters.
Cloud, Barrett, Red XIII, Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie, Cait Sith, Zack, Vincent, Sephiroth, Genesis

Speaking of Genesis, was it ever addressed what his funky materia was? It seems dark purple or black depending on the lighting and apparently it gave him some Cetra magic enchantment ability.

If you were tasked to "remake" FF7 but has to be different enough to barely qualify as one, how would you approach it?

I'd make Remake/Rebirth but without the time janny/multiverse shit. Whispers can appear but only as Weapons following Sephiroth around. Zack from another world gone. Gongaga segment stays. Etc.

Is the FF9 Remake going to be as much of a mess as this or are they going to try and keep it faithful to the original?

      Anonymous

The only changes I'd want from a remake of 9 (beyond not having the combat be so fricking slow) is making it so Freya just has absolutely nothing going on after the rats get nuked and either make the flaming homosexual Amarant actually interesting or delete him from the game. They're clearly willing to rework characters since they ruined Cid in Rebirth but Amarant is already shit.

I fricked up, I meant for Freya to actually have stuff to do after the rats.

It has to be completly faithful or it's fricked, I don't even trust Square with minor story changes
Like 9 is nowhere near 7 level of wankery from the public so i cant see them taking much risk there

Some better setup for the third act would be appreciated. They don't really have to change anything major to slip some follow-through material into the script/world-building.

Why does anyone care about the questions posed by the end of rebirth? They’ll retcon most of it anyways. They retconned Aerith knowing the future at the end of Remake (“ohh I don’t really remember what happened on the midgar highway, tee hee”)

guys, do you think they are playing with us?

so in remake, we thought that it will be the same as original, but yet they changed it near the end

in rebirth, we thought they gonna make us believe that cloud will be able to save aerith, but then she is still dead dead.

in return/part 3, my theory is they gonna be like remake again, so because in rebirth nothing has changed, then in part 3, they need to fool us again thinking nothing is going to change, but then they gonna change the story.
