I always liked Nero more than Dante. He has a girlfriend and punches things. What's there not to like.

I always liked Nero, and I like him even better in DMC5, though in that he's almost just a brand new character. You could see it as character development instead except he doesn't develop towards how he is in 5 during 4, not to my memory. It doesn't matter anyway though because gameplay is king in DMC, cutscenes are just supposed to be entertaining, and a half decent story like in 3 is good but incidental.

      >DMC5, though in that he's almost just a brand new character.
homie what, he is the same as he was in 4 before Kyrie got involved.

        Anonymous

I remember him in 4 being this rude rebel who's good to Kyrie but and will do the right thing but is otherwise a wienery little teen shit who has no control over his temper. In 5 he is way kinder and more mature and seems like a great guy to hang out with, only losing his temper when he's called deadweight and when he learns Vergil his dad.

          Anonymous

it's probably the fact that it's been years since 4, and in the meantime he settled down with kyrie and started his own branch of the family business

The big issue with Nero is that he'll never actually be able to overtake Dante in popularity. And part of the issue is that the devs always hype the frick out of Dante. Like yes, Nero gets strong emotional moments in DMC5, but he doesn't get a hat that shoots money or a Super Saiyan 2 transformation. The devs have basically guaranteed that the moment Dante fully drops out, sales will follow suit.

People disliked Nero in 4 because he has one of the most overly cast animu VAs of his time, and because 3 was so outstanding that nobody wanted to lose Dante. JYB would lose 9 out of 10 auditions to Black folk and trannies nowadays so he's cool again.

I've been waiting since 3 for Dante to get a new VA. Reuben is just a meme stuntman who should have never been allowed to talk.

I don’t like Nero at all. Him being the lead in the past 2 games really put me off about the series. Even his “character arc” in DMCV was bullshit. I don’t get why people praise it so much. Then again, DMC players don’t have high expectations for narrative, so they take anything

I really wished there was a move where Nero could impale a demon with Red Queen and ride it around by revving it like in that cutscene from 4.

Nero wasn't the issue, a lot of DMC4's bs just got kinda blamed on him.
At worst he's a bit too whiny in that game, which is a valid complaint, but minor in the scheme of things. It's that combo of "whiny", "has to do a bunch of gimmicky shit" and "Dante is an objectively more interesting character to play as yet only gets to backtrack his shit" that made him unwelcome.

DMC5 makes him less whiny and gives every character their own good levels.

I’ve always loved Nero he’s a bit of a hothead but he’s cool. Plus I hated how Dante felt in DMC 4 with his kit but Nero’s Max acting felt great. It was always nice to speculate over the years who’s Nero father actually was when it was obviously Vergil

  23. 11 months ago

The reboot had nothing to do with Nero that was just the tail end of the era of Capcom farming all their IPs out to western devs

5 also made a point to basically keep shitting on Nero throughout the game. He shows up without an arm, we see the flashback of him getting beat and his arm ripped off, he gets called deadweight, Nico rips on him the whole game (even if it is just banter), demons keep saying he is powerless and only human, he barely grazes Urizen before Dante swoops back in to save the day, Dante tells him to not get involved and go home, the girls try to talk him down at the end, Vergil mocks him for intervening. It all pays off with him unlocking his DT through sheer will and passion and then b***h slapping Dante and suplexing Vergil around.

I've always liked Nero but I did come in late, right before 5 was announced. I totally get the hate he got with 4 and some still have in 5. He is mechanically more shallow than Dante but honestly, most action game characters are. Some prefer Dante as a character while they see Nero as more whiny and emotional but I prefer him greatly because he actually has to earn his power and wins. Dante effortlessly overcomes everything that isn't Vergil and its boring, while Nero struggles with even the generic Angelos.

The big issue is Dante gets so much more hype. When Dante gets a new weapon, there's a huge spectacle. When Nero gets a new Devil Bringer, Nico just slaps it on the table without much fanfare. Dante gets an exciting new super form, while Nero's big upgrade is literally just the exact same shit that Dante's been using for the past five games. Nero's big fancy new tech the Knuckle Bringer is really just a practicality option. It's not very flashy or fancy and the game doesn't even really call attention to it meaning a lot of normalgays aren't even gonna be aware that it exists. Getting the Devil Bringer back is kind of underwhelming because, again, it's just pure practicality. The Buster Arm already exists and it does way more damage. Practicality is great, yes, but practicality on its own is incapable of really generating hype. Only hyper-autistic combogays will get excited about that sort of thing, but those make up a minority of the sales.

Dante getting all of that fanfare makes Nero's journey all the more rewarding. Nero truly earned the finale. Moreover its due to them making Nero the tutorial character so only giving him one weapon, one gun and one "style" at a time (whether it was just the buster from 4 or now the breakers from 5). Best thing for Nero going forward would be if they dropped this line of thinking that Dante needs a tutorial character. For newcomers, even Nero can feel overwhelming so I get the logic there but for veterans of the series, its time for Nero to level up and get more things going on. If that means more weapons and guns, then so be it. Even a lot of complaints I see about Nero is that he is too basic compared to Dante.

The problem is Nero isn't for veterans. Most veterans are greedy. They only care about themselves. They can't stand that Nero isn't catered to their wants and demand that he become another Dante. That's not what Nero was created for. And, again, Dante's more popular. You can't get rid of him without tanking sales. So the status quo will probably remain for a while.

This is quite the leap, gamer-edition armchair psychologist. I'd ask you to provide one single thread of evidence, but that's not really how psychology works now is it lol

My idea for a new Nero playstyle, isn't a new weapon, but he switches from using his sword to using his ghost fists as a four arm fighter, pummeling the shit out of enemies.

I think using his bringer arms as a gauntlet equivalent is the right move. Ideally I'd let him have Red Queen, breakers, Blue Rose and bringer arms all at once.

I've been playing since the DMC1 on the PS2, and Nero is great. It just takes time to learn how to act/max act consistently, and once you pretty much act after every hit and your exceed gauge is never really empty, you start to really feel his power. On DMC5, I think they also captured the DMC3 feeling where you needed to come into a mission with a strategy of which devil arms you were coming in with like on DMC3 where you're limited on your style and weapons. Plus some of the new shit like Punchline where you ride it like a skate board doing kick flips is badass. He's a great character.
