To be fair, given power levels, there's not really anywhere else to go. All the other skydoms are subordinate to Oarlyegrande, so collecting the rest of the Sky Map Pieces is basically filler. Going to the Astral Realm isn't necessary to get to Estalucia, making it either a side-story, or part of the post-Estalucia arc (perhaps the Society has plans to take over the Stars...). Aside from saving Gran's aunt, what else is there to do, main story wise?

It was never going to be good. The only good part was TK making dancho marry his daughter, and forcing his position on them. That's it. The whole concept of the story was flawed when they made the TK in the first place. Then adding timey wimey bullshit, then multiverse, and it was already worse than the bland theme park archipelago, which was worse than the terribly derivative (by design) "go to the various elemental-themed areas to collect the thing, then defeat the evil empire" of the first arc.
It was never going to be good because they never let go of the original cast of garbage characters nobody ever liked.
They kept adding vastly superior characters even at the start, which everyone instantly enjoyed better than fricking Io and Eugen and Rosetta, but everyone was always "maybe canon, maybe not!"
That coupled with the events being alternate universe only shit, meant the storyline would forever be stuck with the most boring cast of nothingburger characters ever conceived.

No, it's an original story.
My recommendation to be prepared for Relink is this:
Watch season 1 of the anime, then play the story mode of Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising. That's about it, Relink will get you up to speed with whatever else you need to know. The mobile game story is too long, and most of the content is side stories unrelated to the main crew. GBVSR is also a story in another universe where Gran and Djeeta can meet, so it's also not necessary for Relink.
If you want for the mobile game there are 2 major arcs people recommend to know more about the world, which are the "What makes the sky blue" saga which is 3 events, and the Society saga which is every event that features the society characters. The Granblue wiki tells you which events are those, but then again it's optional.

Watch the anime i guess. Its not good but beats actually sitting through the awful early chapters. Real problem is that it only goes up to chapter 28 and the main quest of the mobile game is a complete drag until chapter 40 which slowly ramps up to the conclusion of the first arc in chapter 60 or so.
Then from 60 to 80 theres some sort of interlude before the actual start of the second main arc which goes up to chapter 110. This Arc is a 180º of the first one, good filler but disappointing ending.
From here on "arcs" are less defined and chapter releases became an annual thing, the main story quest is currently on its 177 chapter.

Unlike other legacy games, picking up a character should be pretty simple and fast.

This is something I'm worried about in general. I wouldn't be shocked if 66L is quickly hit by the nerf bat, but its existence and really a lot of the changes are about aggression. The game is okay for defensive options but I think playing at mid and far range is gonna become more frustrating. Unless you're one of the characters who can create a wall it'll be difficult.

I'm playing on PS5 and for some reason the trophies are all in Japanese. The actual game is in full English (and has the dub available and whatnot) but every time I unlock a trophy it's just moonrunes.
So i heard Granblue added a "Random" character like Charade or Edge Master from Soul Calibur. Is she a true random character who changes your fighter every round, or just the boring kind that acts like the regular random button on the character select screen? because i fricking love the Edgemaster style where you have a different moveset for every single round, it's one of the main reasons i never got good at Soul Calibur, because i was having too much fun constantly switching characters.

So Rising includes all the story mode from the first game, did they rebalance the story fights? I remember a lot of the later DLC characters like the moustache midget and the edgy claws guy having oddly tough tutorials compared to the base roster because the generic enemies hit rather hard with their boosted stats.

Supposedly they cut the grinding down in the rpg-mode. In the original game, it could be quite lengthy indeed if you want to do all the post-game stuff. The story is dumb, but does a good job at introducing the setting and characters and some of the bosses could be genuinely fun with some absolute baller tracks blasting.
We'll have to see what they do with the second story-mode for Rising.
Story Mode is almost the same, no more level grind and no more weapon grid but you still select skills that you unlock through progression.

Correct, it has Grand Bruise, online lobbies and a three character rotation outside of Gran but the story mode is only a demo, private rooms can't be made and you're limited to Gran when it comes to combo missions.

Rising won’t die because GBVS never really died, it always had around 200 concurrent players on steam, and because this time it has rollback and crossplay. If you only want a game with thousands of concurrent players on steam at all times, pick one of SF, MK, or Tekken. No other fighting game will make those numbers. This game will probably go the way of strive and sit at 1-1.5k players on average.
