Romans invented it first. Centurions could pay a stipend to get a better position in a campaign that wouldn't have them marched into death as fodder. It was literal microtransation hell as the Roman went through the toll booth disneyland in a strange pattern to keep him from the front. All it costs was money.
You could even force a lesser citizen to carry your possessions so you had an extra stash tab too. You had to be there for the founder's edition but you got real perks for playing compared to the secondaries.

I'd honestly argue that the cancer version of battlepass is all fortenite's doing, the previous ones weren't particularly egregious but the ones that appeared after fortenite cemented the strategy are the problem.
Don't forget they also let their most beloved franchises just rot because they make more money on said cancer than making games.
