Not really. And judging by the amount of overweight people in OP's pic I'm probably not missing much.

I sometimes go to conventions, but a number of the ones in my area seem to be general "retro" cons which just happen to have videogames, so I tend to avoid. The local monthly meetup group covers a pretty large area (DFW), which means that meeting locations regularly wind up being too far away for me to bother with.

I've been considering going to an arcade bar, but I just can't justify paying to play arcade games that don't have special controls/cabs when MAME exists.

Peak /vr/, why even bother going to the toilet when adult diapers exist?

Why should I pay for something I can get for free? For racing and light gun games I get it, but not for shooters or brawlers.

That's sounds awful. You're so jaded by the Ganker hivemind you cant even express an iota of positivity when defending your position. At least make going to a barcade sound fun, fricking pathetic lumox

                >At least make going to a barcade sound fun
Not that anon but okay sure

                >you can drink with people and make friends
                >you can play on retro cabs from when you were a kid and unlock memories
                >you can discover new games
                >meeting new people can lead to sex
                >using real peripherals and not just a mouse and keyboard like a homosexual

actually I got annoyed as I was writing this because it is pretty ridiculous to have to explain. if you think staying at home and emulating makes you superior or whatever then have fun dying alone.

Here's the deal, I dont neccesarily feel compelled to "defend" anything in front of a bunch of mentally ill spergs like you guys.
Especially when its something basic as "why might going to an arcade be fun irl".
If that's beyond your ability to imagine you're probably better off in your basement.

You're not actually getting it, both the product and the experience are imitations. Like pretending sodastream is the same as being served by a soda jerk in a parlor. If it's all the same to you, maybe you just like sugar.

The 1up in Denver is awesome, I always have a good time there. Decent selection of real arcade machines, shit ton of pinball machines, and the crowd who go there are chill. It’s mostly 30 year olds hanging out with friends and drinking booze. 25¢ a game not bad.

I went to one once. There was a literal boomer who collected consoles but didn't play them. He had a goal of installing emulators on any console he bought (not to play, just as something to do). We was asking me how come there are so many versions of Street Fighter 2. I think he said he had every console except the N64 Pikachu version. Other than that, there was a guy there with a C64 (including original monitor) and another guy with a Jaguar. There were also a bunch of kids looking at SNES games, one of which remarked that the SNES was when games became good. Oh yeah, there was a chick there dressed bawdily and acting like she was really into retro games and she remarked at one point "I love Nintendo" and she had a fat friend with her (I mean obese). And she talked a lot too (the loose one, the obese one was mute the whole time). I asked the C64 guy which was better, the NES or the C64 and he said C64. The Jaguar guy I recognised from community television. This was all quite a while ago, I'd say well over 5 years ago, maybe 10 years ago. Anyway, the location was too far for me and I never went back.

Sounds like a bunch of freaks. Are only freaks into retro gaming or are only freaks shameless enough to publically admit they are into this hobby.

I have a few friends who are into retro gaming the same way I am, so I talk to them about it, but being part of a "community" is a waste of time that will always end up being shit. Communities(even in the normie world) consist of shut-ins who don't know how to make friends and so they have to resort to going to planned "meet-ups". This is also why you see lots of "posers" in communities. It's the same people who talk mad shit on discord and social media but are pussies irl. The people who aren't just lonely are usually manipulators and con artists taking advantage of said lonely people, whether it be through abuse or finances.

The freaks are the people who take these "hobbies" and make it their entire personality. There are plenty of normal gamers, you just don't see them because they live a normal life and have jobs and just game casually in their free time.

Yea like the people who are into this hobby are just embarrassing.

But there's definitely a common denominator among "nerdy" hobbies and losers with no life.

ours used to be fun, it was ran by family of mine.
naturally it was drama that totally dissolved it, but others in the community have been trying to revive them with surprising success. demographic isnt predominantly fat sweaty nerds either, really a wide range of normies and clearly non normies (myself included autists are magnetically attracted to each other).

I hope there's one sometime this month, i need to get outta the house.

Last time I went to even a local retro game store the guy tried to tell me that his friend had ps3 games playing on his Dreamcast. He was so adamant about it, then he tried to sell me a shitty aftermarket PS2 memory card when I grabbed a used one. Instead of trying to argue I just bought it and left, never went back. Those are the types of people you meet and irl gatherings.

actual retrogaming events are kinda cringy in my city. Most collectors who exhibit are like these really weird antisocial old dudes like a retired cop or a dentist and the vibe is so off there. That said, I'm glad for the little kids who have a blast with their consoles like in a fair

I do take my stuff anytime I'm invited to art or design events in cafés, vintage pop-ups, parties, etc. Two CRTs with a known and a less-known console, a PVM with a famiclone, maybe an oddity like a Virtual Boy, and set up a chill space. Made some dear friends that way, always the most inward or down to earth people present

Last time there was a "retro" get together at my community center it was mostly games on Wii Console that was dominated by little kids. They had computers connected by Lan to play some RTS games which I had no interest in and single Terminator 2 pinball machine set on freeplay which I never got close to and a mame machine that broke down and didn't work before anybody showed up. I mostly shot the shit with some people but didn't play a thing. They run the same event every 2 or 3 years but I never went again.

Depends what your personal definition of "IRL retro gaming events" is. If you're asking if I like to throw money away while breathing deeply in a shower of aerosolized neck beard bo, then no. I don't do that.

Houston has nothing, which is weird for a city this size but it’s how it is, both Dallas and Austin have way more with regards to retro events. Houston is just a lot of normies who work a lot, which is fine people are genuinely nice here, it’s a result of all the chemical plants though plant culture is a thing

Texas anon here. What Texas things are there in DFW that you know of? I'm not in the loop. I've only heard of one Austin thing.

        Anonymous

In laws live in FW so I’m not super well versed but for example the video game museum is there in Fresno, there’s a commodore computing group that still meets in Dallas regularly, there’s the Dallas maker space that has a ton of electronics and computing groups, like a group that restores arcade cabs for example. I actually highly recommend that makerspace, my wife and I made our wedding rings there and I was blown away by all the stuff they have, I’m depressed just thinking about it if we lived in the area I’d 100% have a membership there. I suspect some of that is due to the tech history in Dallas like with Texas Instruments. Obviously Austin is more modern tech but Dallas feels like it has more tech boomers, which tracks, it’s not all JavaScript coworking networking events like Austin

The game museum is in Frisco.
There's also a DFW retrogaming group, separate from the computing group, which has monthly meetups. A lot of them seem to revolve around swap meets, so if you're not interested in buying/selling, some of the meetings might get a little boring.

I used to. When I was younger, there was a store set up on the main strip of my town that had a few setups in a room and would do Melee tournaments. They closed down a few years ago and got replaced by a few other small businesses who tried to capitalize on a similar market, but they pretty much entirely run on card games now. Wish I had a good spot for that near me, even if it does attract sweaty redditors, most of the ones I know are fairly nice

They used to have a nice retro gaming convention in my neck of the woods called Super Bitcon, but it got fricked by a tornado in 2017 and they haven't held it since. Went to a weeb convention with my girlfriend instead later that year and picked up some Super Famicom and Japanese PS1 games. I don't really go to conventions or events anywhere these days, still bitter about Super Bitcon coming to an end thanks to a literal act of God and I haven't enjoyed going to social gatherings since my girlfriend dumped me over five years ago.

I'm not that social, and they're mostly frequented by the kinds of people you'd expect, so it would be obese ass neckbeards, boomers, transsexuals, probably some random furry, random dudebro who lamed out and is stuck in the 2000s, etc.
