The only thing wrong with the Dreamcast is the following:

Almost no online games supported BBA
Not all games VGA compatible
VMU don't have enough storage
Other than these four gigantic flaws it's basically perfect.

you're supposed to roll the dpad with the center of your thumb like every other sega pad, not scrape it on the sides for quarter circles
The fricking thing read wrong inputs all the time, I had 3 DC controllers and they all did that. Pretty bad for a console with such a high proportion of arcade ports that didn't use the analog sticks as the main input.

The contoller is okay for what it does. Far from the worst. Online is dead anyway (well not totally). Gunbird 2 not being VGA compatible is an atrocity, but let's be glad they evem bothered with VGA, Dreamcast has pristine picture quality compared to a PS2. VMU should have at least triple the size, nowerdays you can still get them cheap - and you can use them through other plugged in controllers, which is a nice feature.
The only good thing about the Dreamcast was the magnetic stick that doesn't drift.
The ergonomics? garbage. The cord also goes down instead of up like an actual controller (dualshock, GC, xbox) unless you use the moronic holder which bends the cord.
It had some great games but also some stinkers too and the library wasn't large enough to justify it.

Cord placement had to be that way, vmu/rumble didn’t leave much space up top for the cord, just use the notch.

Because the vmu screen needed to be towards the top, so you could check shit real fast. How was Sega supposed to know even their in house teams would only do stupid shit like put a picture of a skull in the center?

Getting a Dreamcast + contoller for $80 and a GDEMU off of aliexpress is probably the least disappointed I've been with a vidya purchase in the past 10 years.

the fact that it had such a great library with only a 3 year lifespan is a testament to how good it actually was. sony knew it was good and they needed to murder it ASAP. PS2 only started getting good when it was older than the dreamcast.
my DC is janky... Some games wont read unless I unplug the controller then start the console. It does this with every game I order. Heart attack every fricking time.

That's a well-known issue, if you plug and unplug controllers from the DC too much the ports get messed up. Probably better to find a new console and limit how often you unplug the controllers.
