It's nothing like Zelda. It's more like a weird single player action Final Fantasy thing? It's quite unique and even the sequels feel very different.
because it's not even a FF game, in Japan it was called Seiken Dentetsu, and its sequel, Seiken Dentetsu 2 on SNES, was called Secret of Mana in the rest of the world.
So it's really a Mana game, hence the different gameplay.

If the puzzles were more developed I would consider it on par with later Zelda titles. It's got nothing on Zelda 1 though.

The Legend Of Zelda is the greatest adventure game of all time, and people feel the need to either worship it and ignore everything that came before it, or tear it down (in the case of the /vr/ hipsters you mentioned.
