Is a game dev degree worth it?
$90k seems slightly steep but considering you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating, it doesn't sound too bad.

>you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating
You're unironically more likely to succeed doing things on your own/making a team yourself, even if they're self-taught amateurs.
Bro just study for a CS degree and intern at game studios. Game Dev degrees are a meme
yes.
also make sure youre prepared to be a perma wagie with $100k in debt for bideo game degree
Not in the least bit. Learn to code.
I almost went to full sail, concluded it was a scam, then went to a regular university to study mechanical engineering. I now work from home making 6 figures a year. Pretty chill.
how was the transition from college to looking for jobs. im going into EE and im not sure whats on the horizon after u get a bachelor's
Terrible. It took me like 2 years to get a job lol. This was awhile ago though I've been employed for 5 years now so the job search was 7 years ago.
Graduated 2011, Had my full time by the following spring, however it wasn't easy and it wasn't in the field I studied. I'm doing better though as a result, but it all came down to the connections I made outside that job within the field.
I'd imagine shits more moronic now though.
your first job is always the hardest to get in tech
Please tell us how you do mechanical engineering from home.
do you think engineers build shit or something?
as it turns out, the mechanics of the physical world are invariant whether you're in an office or at home
Design, drafting, document reviews, etc. The guys building shit are not the ones designing it in most cases.
>Please tell us how you do mechanical engineering from home.
they do cad shit and simulation tests on remote computers.
You missed out on watching the nxt tapings on campus
>considering you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating
Don't you dare believe this, unless you really want to be jobless and in debt.
>120 hours for a degree
No wonder modern games are so fricking trash
this better be bait. Otherwise you really are the dumbest Black person
moron
credit hours are not literal hours, moron.
>you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I went there. I wouldn't recommend it.
>near six figure job
Buddy, just get a basic b***h CS degree and guarantee six figs.
What do you think is worth $800/hr? Listening to an Indian read a PowerPoint?
full sail is a known scam.
not one ONE 1 UNO noteworthy person graduated from that place.
>you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating
>you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating
Not if you're a white male.
Hey it's that scam "university" that used to take out ads on late night cable stations in the early 2000s.
I'm surprised they are still around.
shit like this is why gaming is so fricking trash nowadays
you don't go to a fricking school to learn how to make games, that's how you make trash for the lowest common denominator
l
no fricking wonder you homosexuals cant make games for shit
>t. regional manager in a public cybersecurity corporation
>you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating
Full Sail is a scam that uses marketing to try and get low-IQ "gamers" to pay them 90k for a degree that isn't worth shit
If you want to get into game development, get a CS degree. It doesn't have to be from an expensive school, you can go to the one in state.
yeah but what about DigiPen? is this a bigger scam than that? did you know that James Portnow of ExtraCreditz fame was an instructor at DigiPen?
>digipen
Im sure they offer CS with game development specialization. The guy i know who graduated is a beast in enginedevving and art.
As long as its a CS degree its fine. Dont take a "game dev degree" imo
I got a degree in graphic design and make $132k basically editing home video-quality footage for a self absorbed CEO and his cult corporation in between playing vidya
Anyway there's no money in game dev unless you're a suit or a marketer.
Learn a practical skill that can you you work in and out of vidya (coding, UX, graphic design, marketing, etc) that way you can get a better education and have more job opportunities besides hoping a studio notices you and sucks your bone marrow
I went through this program 10 years ago. If you're not making small games RIGHT NOW, WITH YOUR OWN TIME, Full Sail won't help you.
But also:
If you're making small games, right now with your own time: you don't need Full Sail or a degree.
Bro just watch a few Unity tutorials. There’s no reason for you to waste money on information that’s free to the public.
you go to college not for the information but for the easy access to (supposed) experts, and to make connections
>$90k seems slightly steep but considering you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating, it doesn't sound too bad.
No. Not sure for the software side of things but anything to do with creating shit in games (characters, environments, animation, level design etc) are based on your portfolio. No one cares where you learnt the skills, as long as you can do it. Short courses are fine as long as they get straight to the point but the shit I've seen bee sold in art schools for games are legitimate scams. They can take something as simple as UVs and stretch it into a 12 week term when you could learn that shit in 3 from youtube videos.
I thank god everyday for being born in California where public colleges are dirt cheap. Only cost me 18k for my compsci degree and now Im making ~200k.
Frick no. Go to trade school and get certified in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical. It’s so highly in demand that companies are hiring people who just have interest in going into the fields.
yeah man I wouldn't chance it unless you're a trust fund kiddie who thinks he's the greatest idea guy the industry never had.
is there a single notable game dev that came out of a "game dev" school?
Im too fricking dumb and lazy for uni i cant take it anymore
Why didn't i just do a trade
same but I've almost graduated
>guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry
If you're really this dumb, you deserve to be scammed.
If you're lazy, get a 30-40k STEM degree from some intermediate state school and go do IT Analyst things.
If you're motivated, take that 90k to a more prestigous school and go into Fintech or something like that making a quarter mil after three years and pay some subby bottom who went to school for video games to make your dream game.
If I recall correctly you just take a few unity courses and they give you a certificate that says you can make a unity game. but it doesn't guarantee you any jobs and will most likely get laughed at in a interview if you don't have any other credentials to back it up.
I mean I did a CS + simulation & gaming major in undergrad because double majoring was as simple as taking a few art classes and fun electives instead of shit like Compilers and Cybersecurity and as part of a class I was able to get a unity cert which seems like it would be MORE useful than whatever full sail certificate you can get.
?t=1753
study physics, learn to code on your own
Full Sail is a scam college
>near six figures
>'game design' degree
Yeah ok.
>full sail uni
don't get scammed
If you have to go to one of these schools go to Europe
It’s cheaper
>Game dev
>Six figure
Good one.
>$90k seems slightly steep but considering you're guaranteed a near six figure job in the industry after graduating, it doesn't sound too bad.
Even if the game design degree got you a job in the industry, it's not even gonna be close to six figures.
>fullsail
Lol it's a scam for rich kids so their parents would get off their backs. If you are taking a loan for this you are NGMI
It’s all the chore of corporate dev work but with mandatory crunch that normies wouldn’t tolerate.
No one should tolerate crunch in any capacity.
Work your hours, get your pay, go home and live your life. Frick deadlines.
Not even an act of God can get you a career in 2023.
Get a massive debt you never intend to pay back and just try your best to get away with it. It's not a substitute for a good life, but it feels funny.
>Wanting to work in the games industry
You're better off going to a real school for that sort of stuff. They don't really teach "game design", but you learn animation, 3D modeling, and UI design that can apply to things outside of video games.
Game dev degree is a scam and a shit thing to go through. At 23 I setup my own course schedule for IT at a community college. I would work the whole year besides summer. I took 12 credit hours every semester fall/spring/summer and would usually get anywhere from 1500-2300 back from fafsa each semester. After that I went to uni for computer science and that only cost me like 16k for my 2 years at my nearby university living off campus. In total my degree, including scholarships cost like 8k and I worked through most of it. Game devs and C++ Black folk are memes.
Game design as a higher education course is a fricking meme, just do like other anons said and learn ui/animation and copy what you like from your favorite games for the """design""" part
This entire demoralization thread is exactly the reason why right wing chuds can't make video games.
>t. Scammed out of 100k for a meme paper that says they're qualified for picking their own ass at most
It's not demoralization to say that getting a major specifically for an industry infamous for developer burnout and abuse is not a good idea.
Go spend half that amount on a CS degree from a local state university and learn the game design parts on your own.
I think an entry level job in videogames - beta tester- is around 259k. You are guaranteed to recoup your investment in one year. I am a senior videogame lead designer and I make 2 millions a year. I don't do much besides vectoring certain decisions and doing some code with chatgpt from time to time.
I went to college for vidya gaems
I knew that it was iffy but there was a local school that did a course focused on the dev/coding side instead of design and it was one of the highest rated in the country so I went through with it. Ultimately most of what I learned was self-taught/experiential but the programming courses were fine and their 3D modeling/rigging teacher was fantastic.
I got a QA contract at Harmonix right out of college and wanted to fricking kill myself every single day, now I do WFH mobile dev
The best games were made by people who did not have game dev degrees.
The worst games were made by people that did.
Take that as you will.
I'm a college dropout with IT leanings and I make more money and more games than anyone who fell for the fullfail scam lmao
NO DEGREE IS WORTH IT UNLESS IT GUARANTEES YOU A CAREER
dude one of my best friends used to work as a designer at Ubisoft. he always told me that 90% of the people would earn twice the salary in companies out of the gaming industry with the exact same skills.
working in the gaming industry is as much as a scam as buying videogames.
I did the recording arts degree. Worst mistake I ever made.
I knew it was a scam when they stopped giving us paper text books and then issued PDF scans of them. Then they dropped one class from 2 months to one month, then eventually it went to online. A few other classes became online only as well. Just in time for their alumni building to go up, which featured zero classrooms or classes, just a hall of fame.
They also have you pay for programs you use once, I mean you have them if you really want to use them. It's a for profit school through and through. When I was there, the only job a Video Game Design degree could get you was a job at Midway because Full Sail grads had a reputation of being shitheads.
I wish someone had given me guidance when looking over the school but I had no one. I thought it was divine intervention when the flyer showed up on my bed because I had no frickibg clue what I was doing after high school, I just wanted to do something different.
I ended up finishing the degree and joined the Marines, using the degree to get placement as PFC out of boot. That may have been another mistake altogether but the difference is I'm not still paying for anything that happened in the Marines. The only reason I've almost left Full Sail debt behind entirely is through a serious of blessing in disguise misfortunes.
Don't go there. 1 out of 100 students can actually get somewhere with the degree, everyone else is shackled with debt out the ass. Pay 1/8th the price for an engineering degree.
Oh and I'll add, having a side job while in school is nearly if not entirely impossible as your class schedule changes every month from 7am class one month, to labs that end at 3am. I had one month where I would stay up for 24 hours 3 times a week because a block of 2 classes went from 9am, short break at 5pm, then lab from 8 to midnight. So you will be taking loans out for living expenses and rent.
Oh and you'd better drive because all the Black person junkies in the area know Full Sail students carry laptops and they love robbing you. No the school won't replace it, you're gonna pay for another one.
seriously bro. don't do this scam shit.
go talk to some actual industry people and they will tell you that getting a good job high-paying job in the industry only comes down to 2 things
RAW TALENT
and
WHO YOU KNOW
6 figure gamedev jobs are for people who have been doing game development since they started highschool
you can learn for free on the internet
piece of paper means nothing nowadays
