Yup, I loved the atmosphere the most. They did the southern environment really well.

      >Didn't play it because it looked like shit, not an RE game and unappealing setting
      >Village comes out
      >Decide to try 7
      >It's the best RE in a long time and the unappealing setting plays into it

It's so good I'm surprised it came from modern Capcom.

Then there was 8 that had so much potential to be a great game. It's just good and that's about it.

i actually had the same exact reaction
I refused for years to play it and finally relented because RE8 was coming out and it looked good. I was so blown away that 8 felt lackluster in comparison

Yeah, it hits all the fundamental beats and has solid gameplay thanks to the level design. Better than 8 at least.

i loved it. never understood the hate it got. i had just got bladder cancer removed and played it straight through. great game.

it's unacceptable for any modern game to have unskippable cutscenes on repeat playthroughs.

First time around I get it, but I agree.

Beat it the other month and currently going through the DLC. It's fantastic, one of my favorites in the series

It's good up until the boat after which the game decides to jump into the garbage
RE1 and RE4 remain the only complete RE games that are truly great from start to finish

      >RE4
Maybe half of the island is any good.

It's a good one. Not quite a great one, but the best in years at the time of release. It's from the same director as Revelations 1 and by and large feels like a AAA refinement of several of that game's ideas, which is good as it was a decent game while the mainline was shitting itself with 5 and 6. A bit too small scale to be called a true return to form but the emphasis on resource management and adventure style exploration made a return all the same.

I would have really wanted to play it first in VR, I heard it's great in VR. Wasn't it first demoed at some convention in VR if I remember correctly?

I'm still not over how fricking badly they dropped the ball with RE8.

RE7 wasn't perfect, but at least it had *something*. The first person view, the faceless new protagonist, the mystery and horror of the Baker estate; the moment when you start using Item Boxes and combining herbs and realizing it's actually a fricking RESIDENT EVIL game. I really loved it.

Then what does RE8 try to do? Please everybody who didn't like 7, while still also trying to make a sequel to 7; the end result just being generic, diluted shit. Like who the frick is RE8 even for? The survival horror sucks, the action sucks, the story sucks. I guess the environments and waifus were good. I'm not even kidding when I say I would rather go back to RE6 then whatever the frick RE8 tried to be.

RE6 wasn't inherently bad, it's just not what RE needed to be, nor was the coke and hookers blank check budget any help in terms of a cohesive identity.

There's definitely a good game in RE6, it's just buried underneath a bunch of dreadful early 10's game design trends.

7 has some shortcomings but I really respect their dedication for sticking to the killer hillbilly theme. The whole game is just relentlessly disgusting as frick. I think they wanted to go even harder based on the concept art but must have been told to dial it back by somebody.

        >I think they wanted to go even harder based on the concept art but must have been told to dial it back by somebody
i have no proof but i 100% believe this is true. Japs thought 7 was TOO scary so thats all the proof I need that they were told to dial it back and why 8 had no horror

RE8 was made exclusively for me. it's my perfect game

RE8 could have been worse, it was just too empty and short. It felt rushed and like they tried to make it good at the same time. It just seemed like it was a cluster frick that so much was cut out and shortened it harmed the game. The last two fights before Miranda are basically just filler when they should have, and could have been the better bosses in the game. I've seen a lot of people agree with that Dimitrescu should have been the 2nd to last boss fight, her character amongst the others had a lot of potentional.

RE8 is fricking fun and the action is amazing. yes, it could have more horror but it's fricking amazing.

        RE8 was literally remake3 tier.

Besides Remake RE7 has the most SOUL in the series.
Every room drips with atmosphere and tells a story it's amazing.

Man the art direction and level design in 7 was so good, it was really cool how they managed to keep it relatively grounded while still keeping that slightly over the top RE feel.

It's still the only RE game that could scare me.

Man, I would fricking KILL for an RE7 remaster on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Which RE side games are worth playing? I’ve only ever touched main numbered titles.

Code Veronica is worth at least one playthrough if you're not including that in the numbered games you've played, although opinions on it vary.
Revelations 1 & 2 are pretty good, although keep in mind 1 is a little more basic and the scanning gimmick isn't great.
Survivor 1 is kind of jank and has the worst voice acting in RE history but it's very short. Survivor 2:CV is an arcade port and it's shit. Dead Aim is okay.
Outbreak 1 & 2 are good but you'll lose a lot of the appeal by playing them solo since they're meant to be multiplayer games. The same applies for Operation Raccoon City but it's more action-based than survival horror.
Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles are okay time-wasters if you just want a light gun game.
Stay the frick away from Umbrella Corps, I'm pretty sure it's dead anyway.
Gaiden is bad but you can just emulate it if you're curious.
I think that's all of them.
