Elaborate. I almost bought these because they were popular. I got the Witcher 1 and 2 because they were cheap but I got bored quickly with them.
      What is surface level storytelling?
Which novels did Cyberpunk lift from?
I would rather read those than get into the game, honestly

NTA but Witcher 3 is just a shit game. The only thing people praise about it is the story. The story is essentially just a massive lore dump. Save your time and just watch literally any movie.

Thanks. I don't know how people can play video games that are just pretty books. I saw a webm of a hilariously bad combat scene and that was it for me. I can barely sit still long enough for movies, I like to be engaged. I guess shifty clicker games ruined me

The Witcher 1 and 2 are genuinely pretty good games. Both have very significant, branching storylines that you can actively make major decisions about, and are pretty complex. The gameplay of both is...not much to write home about, TW1 is really hard to get into for most people, and 2 is pretty basic third-person action.

TW3 is...a lot like Skyrim. It's a vast open world game, with a map full of tons of points of interest to ride to and see what's there, only to find that literally all of them are nothing but a few generic bandit enemies or maybe a monster and a small loot chest or whatever. Just nonsense sprinkled throughout the map to distract you for a minute. The gameplay is about as generic and uninspired mash-click-to-attack third person action as you can get, you do basically nothing except spam Light Attacks, Geralt dances around the battlefield cutting limbs off, and occasionally you mix in a fire blast or something for fun. You can literally play the entire game on max difficulty without ever healing if you just use the sidestep dodge, and spam light attacks.

The storytelling is like a really long novel that should be good, but is built on a horrible foundation. The whole thing is just Geralt chasing two women, only to find out neither of them need or want his help because they're both super-important Mary Sue demigods and he's actually just some fricking moron who is sort of just hanging around for every major event in the world but not actually important to any of them. The whole reason for the plot is because Ciri is super-crazy special magic woman.

          >Which novels did Cyberpunk lift from?
Bladerunner (which isn't a novel), basically every Phillip K Dick story, that kind of stuff.

Kek, thanks. I'm not really an rpg guy anyway but enjoy some fantasy. Maybe the novels would be more my thing

I'm playing Cyberpunk right now, I just bought it recently. I know it was fricked and basically a fake game at launch, but I figured it might be worth fricking around in now, especially with mods.

Well guess what? There's basically no mods outside of female clothing and titty models, so that's fricked. But as a game, it's just...not fun. Like not even in a dumb fun just blasting enemies and shit. At this point, all the posts I've read, everyone I've heard saying "lol i liek shootin dudes lol mantis blade cyber weapon lol" I've concluded is all shitposting.

The game has dialogue that is about as trite and banal as the mass-produced nonsense filling Assassin's Creed games, but there's just so fricking much of it. Just tons and tons and tons of listening to NPCs blab about nothing, which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if the game actually had any real character engagement or in-dialogue choices or narrative decisions to make. But since it doesn't, you're left knowing every conversation is just you being narrated at, and then you get your usual Bethesda-tier list of choices "1. Ok, I'll do it. 2. More info about topic A. 3. More info about topic B."

And the thing that bothers me the most on top of that stuff, is how fricking tame the game is. They spent what must have been years crafting this world that's supposed to be like, hypersexual, hyper-deviant, just crazy off the wall shit cranked up to 11. And yet despite the amount of butts and boobs on the billboards, the actual game is a fricking chaste and sexless as a Hallmark movie. There's literally no actual deviant shit the player can even engage in, which is the most baffling shit of all.

I genuinely don't understand how people can find the characters and story in this game interesting. One would have to live a life completely devoid of any and all media to find anything in this game novel or inciteful. Every character in this game is like a teenage girl going on and on and on endlessly about stupid shit or they're whining and crying. It's frankly aggravating listening to the characters.

          >but there's so little cyberpunk shit these days that 77 is serviceable.
Is it though? In the same way that The Witcher had an opportunity to really play up the central theme of the story by letting you actually play the role of a monster hunter, expert, and freelancer by having to learn, study, craft, trap, and exploit monsters nature in order to take them out, but instead is just a hack-and-slash simulator, Cyberpunk had the opportunity to really let you feel like you're making real decisions about your life in this transhumanist world; Do you replace your body with metal, are there real consequences for carving away so much flesh, how does this cyber eye compare to this other one, etc., along with real stories about what it actually means to be a person and connect with other people in this almost post-corporeal paradigm.

But instead, it's just a shooter where you can "upgrade your eye" for more headshot damage, and "upgrade your skeleton" for more bullet damage reduction and outside of that no one really ever even mentions cybernetics or robots.

Your expectations for a video game are dumb. Not wrong, as its opinionated, but dumb. The game you think you want would be very boring, and you can probably find it in an indie title somewhere that you should go sniff around for.

I'm not the anon you're replying to but items with tradeoffs or unique cost/benefit considers are hardly a novel or fringe concept. You're just so used to AAA games doing nothing more than "see number go up you make big progress hooray numba won player!". Good games make you think about upgrades.

              >Your expectations for a video game are dumb.
Lol. Ah yes, frick me for expecting this LITERAL BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY be able to make anything that isn't the most rehashed, trite, base-level garbage. Frick me for expecting the company that promise they would make the most groundbreaking, true RPG ever, to actually even put a modicum of effort into that.

              >The game you think you want would be very boring
Anon, one of the best video games of all time is Ultima IV, a game with basically no combat to speak of despite being a party-based RPG, where the entire story revolves around the player traveling to every town and spending time learning and understanding the Virtues those towns are built on so that you can save them from the evil guys who are corrupting the Virtues. The whole game revolves around you literally having long, intense and personal conversations with important characters from the past and present and watching them change and grow as people.

And it's easily 10 times more satisfying than all of The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk or Skyrim or Fallout 4 ever could be.

The reason YOU think it would be boring is because you have fricking TikTok brain and can't pay attention to anything for more than 20 seconds.

They're all just cardboard cutouts. Which is not unusual, it's pretty par for the course with modern RPGs, but the problem is that the game also makes the player a mandatory cardboard cutout. You can't grow or change as a person, you can't have your own ideals or ideas, and you can't really affect the world in any meaningful way other than just going where Johnny and/or the cast of strong lesbian women tell you to go and killing who they tell you to kill.

For me, the closest the game comes to feeling interesting is when I have to do a mission where I can go somewhere and sneak around and steal shit without being caught. Yeah, it's pretty one-note, just Distract, then takedown, hack cameras to turn off, and that's basically it. But it's something at least. Nowhere near what I'd call an "RPG", certainly nowhere near being a fun game I ever want to replay.

I think the worst character of all is V. At least with the other characters you get a break from them but V is always there being a whiney butthole or just an old fashioned rude prick. It's only compounded by the fact the voice actor isn't very good. I've never played female V but the males voice is grating. He's always so miserable.

            Anonymous

Female V sounds like excessively smoking senior student girl and at the same time as low-tier backstreet thug, a gopnik, no matter the cirscumstances...
And some genius decided to put those fricking jokes in every dialoge. I hate playing through Takemura quesline only because how cringe it is, V just can't stop belittling Takemura at every single opportunity.
In short: I'd silence V entirely, voice acting is bad, everyone's else - digestable

Stop playing on normal ("hard"). Nowadays all major games have difficulty toned a step down. This isnt elitism, it has been said by devs from different comppanies multiple times. Majority of players dont like dying. Like really dont: dying more than once every 2 hours in non-pvp game causes most people to quit for good. Thus, normal is easy, hard is intended normal, and very hard offers slight challenge. Like exactly what you want: if you build right, you'll 2-shot most enemies. Then again, enemies will also 2-shot you so you actually need cover, cybernetics and luring them out.

Cyberpunk is "safe edgy". Like it's a dystopian world, run by corporate tyrants, everything is le dark but you can't say "Black person" or trade drugs.
Keanu Reeves is a colossal miscast as he gives richboi vibes, while he should have been more like Lenny from Motorhead, at least voice-wise. Keanu's voice is just soft.
Music is just horrible, score gets the job done, but radio is trash, radio is 1. Bix Noods bassboosted hiphop 2. Disgusting corporate israeli-produced le rebellious punk rock 3. Bland minimal techno 4. Soft wubs-wubs at Pacifica Dreams, which is the only thing, if you are into it.

      Anonymous

      >Keanu Reeves is a colossal miscast
I think the thing I understand least is, why exactly do they spend so much time referring to Silverhand as a "rocker" when as far as the story seems to exposit, he recorded 2 shitty albums no one likes and they played a few shows at underground clubs and shit. Like, is the dude actually a musician, or is he just some moron who spent 10 minutes pretending and then somehow decided that his real calling was terrorism?

Either way, Keanu absolutely doesn't have the actual grit or edge in his character or voice to really pull off a pissed, punk terrorist. This is the guy who's entire movie career was spent being a soft-spoken dude who barely says anything.

        Anonymous

He is not a "rocker", he is a "rockerboy" - a different term in Cyberpunk universe. Rockerboys are directly said to be posers who epitomize "style over substance"-line of thinking.

Johnny is exactly this. He is narcissistic and self-absorbed. Even his memories at Arasaka HQ (which his engram self seems to build his personality around) are false - Smasher didnt even know who he was and cut him down in seconds. Morgan Blackhand was the main character of said assault, but is nowhere to be seen in his memories. He poses as anti-corpo paragon, but was actually being working as a pawn for Militech, which he "forgot" too.

This is why writing complex characters is difficult: even something as basic (and spelled out in-game) as Johnny flies way over most people's heads.

          Anonymous

Oh, I see. I am unfamiliar with this term.

Ok, now post a single game that we can't nitpick like this. Even the game you consider the greatest work of art can be nitpicked like this. I'm sure you're a grognard and your favourite game is a obscure crpg from the 80s but go ahead and post it.

      >Even the game you consider the greatest work of art can be nitpicked like this
It's not nitpicking if the entire game is mediocre. Nitpicking implies you have to look deep to find something to complain about.

Also, literally any other game you can name might be as bad, sure. But those games didn't have half a billion dollars of development budget and 8 years in the pipeline. If you can spend literally infinite money and time on a game and still not make it even baseline enjoyable to play, then that's infinitely worse than any other game that might be equally unplayable. Those games didn't have a studio of 3000 fricking people working on them.

Yes, everything can be criticized, how observant and insightful of you. A good game just has far fewer things to criticize but that doesn't make it flawless. Cyberpunk has little that is praiseworthy about it.
