Is DF worth getting into these days? I've heard numerous complaints that the steam release has made the game somehow less interesting, but I don't know the details.

you have to be good at being creative/making your own objectives. dwarf fortress takes a little bit to understand, but you can easily survive if you just build drawbridges and play like a gay.
It made it less interesting because most people knew DF only from AARs and dramatized retellings but as it turns out when you get past the inaccessibility barrier it's actually not that deep of a game. There is a lot of simulationist autism going on in the background but for the most part it's not very relevant, the fortress survival is actually pretty simple and it's very much a sandbox game with not much of a direction or progression compared to other contemporary colony builder style games. Individual dwarves are also actually pretty disposable and interchangeable so you don't really get attached to them either unless you really go out of your way to follow someone out of a hundred.
I remember trying to get into DF some 4 years ago, during the pandemic. The game seemed extremely interesting and I got israeliteed by that Black person Sseth into playing it. I couldn't get over the graphics, so I decided to wait for the steam version.
I have clocked 27 hours in the steam version. It's a boring game. Dwarves sometimes refuse to do shit for some unknown reason, and that's as deep and mysterious as the game gets. The generated stories are not particularly engaging, and most of it is stuff that you'll never bother reading. However, watching a well edited gameplay that focuses on creating stories is actually engaging enough, it's just the game itself that's a bit boring. Still waiting on adventure mode, which might actually change things up, but I'm not holding my breath.

I hate you and everything you represent.
When the game is like 90% imagination it's just a bad videogame. And if the whole experience is supposed to be a creative writing outlet that doesn't make it a good game and there's nothing particularly special about DF that you couldn't get running a pen and paper campaign or just writing a fricking novel.
You have to try to hard to get value out of it that it becomes redundant in the process because it just doesn't bring all that much to the table.
cry about it
It's not for everyone and very polarizing: you either adore it or have zero clue how anyone can enjoy it
Remove the obtuse UI and controls, which is what the steam release did, and it's basically a pretty simple-to-abuse sandbox with a lot of things running in the background that you won't really see or interact with in a normal playthrough
But if you get hooked on it, there is literally nothing else like it, and likely never will be
Can't really explain why I like it, I just do
>Individual dwarves are also actually pretty disposable and interchangeable so you don't really get attached to them
I actually feel like it's the opposite for me. It doesn't really make sense, but I care about my dwarfs a lot more because they are disposable in the grand scheme of things
>I actually feel like it's the opposite for me. It doesn't really make sense, but I care about my dwarfs a lot more because they are disposable in the grand scheme of things
I suppose I can see that. In sort of a roundabout way because there's is not much mechanical reason to keep the alive the only thing that is left is empathy. There is agency to it, you know they are disposable so you could let them die but actively choose not to.
I still feel like dorfs are not really distinct enough to keep track of them a lot of the time.
>Can't really explain why I like it, I just do
Maybe because you are a fricking stupid semiliterate subhuman who just cant refrain from posting your worthless comments? Yes, that would explain it.
Anon, did Toady personally shit in your cereal today?
ded gem
>NOT A STRATEGY GAME.
What's the difference?

For the unknowledgeable, the Steam version of DF REQUIRES a new gen every RAW change due to mods not being baked into the save anymore.

What kind of autism is this?
the dumb kind
It's a guy who's been raiding DF threads for half a year at this point. He needs to take his medication.
But if not for him, /dfg/ on /vg/ wouldn't have risen from the dead for two threads
the kind whose medication should be a 1.5 ounce lead slug applied directly to forehead at as high a velocity as available on hand. expert recommend two doses just to make sure the patient is correctly treated.
nope all of its mechanics are smoke and mirrors and break down the moment you try to mod it
I can't believe this asshurt homosexual is still shitposting this thread every time it pops up.
imagine not being able to imagine
Why the frick would I waste my time imagining moron dwarves choking on their own shit and elves fricking trees when I can imagine cute girls instead?
Imagine seething about the existence of DF on /vst/ again
>general
>not a strategy game
Why not post in /vrpg/ instead?
Played a couple hundred hours of the steam release, I like it, might play it again if he truly does continue to work on it for 20 years
/dfg/ has died
long live /dfg/
It was always dead, every once and a while a necromancer comes by and gestures
This most recent one got to the bump limit. Then the followup died.
it lives
long live
Fortress mode sucks ass. Build a few 3x3 farm plots, have stills make booze forever, get a bridge defense with a few militia dwarves training 24/7, and you're done. Literally just do that and you will survive anything that the game throws at you. Also the game gets unplayable over 100+ dwarves anyways due to poor optimization.
Adventure/legends mode is still kinda fun to play around with though. Just grind macros for swimming for a few in-game days and you're basically a god. Then use legends viewer to become a based vampire-werewolf-necromancer tumblr oc with a full set of artifact weapons and armor
the steam release just defaults to thinking you are a moron and has all settings set to easy, easy fix is just change them on world gen and game start to be honest
change ores from everywhere to scarce
From the good ol' days of the general, of the game, for that matter.
I haven't forgiven you for being moronic and ousting us from this place for weeks during the last sojourn here.
That weren't me - that was Dwarf Butt gay. I came to have fun, talk about the game. He was the turd who ran-off all us drawgays.
fair enough, my annoyance for him is unending
I know - I especially miss the cool stuff Drew used to post... Here, have a t-shirt
Of course - that was a while ago.
Recall all the death matches? I miss them. Remember Toki Cutebold?
... Of course, she was one of many who fell in those days...
I started a game and dried to dig below the aquifer, i went 12+ z levels down, breached the caverns, and its still damp..
Lol aquifers filtered me
>start playing game
>manage to get a stable food supply after some hours, start expanding
>hit an aquifer and it floods tqo levels killing some dwarfs
>search for youtube video on how to drain an aquifer on df
>videos are half an hour long and slow af
>realize I don't actually want to play the game anymore
>never touch it again
>watching videos on youtube instead of reading wiki
