Works on my machine. Just bought it on GOG, haven't played it since the 90s.

Yes, I was awaiting that the price drop at 6€, before buying it (Diablo + Hellfire). By the way there's mods that let you play the Win9x Diablo, in Win10/11, without any fuss, like DevilutionX (that has been translated even in other languages than english), or The Hell.

D1 was the first game I played online. Battle.net was pure kino. Cheaters would cast fire wall where you spawned into town so you’d die before you finished loading. Dropping duped godly plate of the whale, kings sword of haste, obsidian ring of the zodiac in every game

It is because it stole the souls of many 90s kids back in the day; which was used to make Diablo 2.

I just beat it for the first time last year on the PS1. It's really simple and straightforward and you'll wear your thumb out mashing the attack button, but it's charming and doesn't waste your time with shitty side quests. Just you and this deep cave beneath the town. I wish more games were like it.

NTA but it’s a cash grab expansion made by a third party, not the original devs. I played the shit out of this back in the day and was never interested in it.

Poorly made additional levels shoehorned into the main game with side quests that clash with the atmosphere, it breaks the game's balance
      and It's not canon.
Also the original developer, David Brevik
      did not approve the expansion.

It's fine, but get the mouse mod that lets you hold down to attack.

this, and/or buy a burner mouse because it will be a death knell for you left mouse button

        >this, and/or buy a burner mouse because it will be a death knell for you left mouse button
Diablo was infamous for destroying mice back in the day. They didn't add hold down to attack until the second game.

    There's a source port: https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX

Yes you can still play it on modern machines. If you download off GoG then it comes with natural compatibility. There’s also an online port if you have the original game files.
Beyond that, you have the DevilutionX sourceport which is a rebuild of the original game engine and allows for things like widescreen support, multiplayer, and full quests instead of quests being randomly assigned.
If you want more, you can try Belzebub which is a bit more like a “reimagining” of the game. Engine is rebuilt and original assets are used, but the mod also adds a bunch of other features for better and for worse. More spells, more items, lots more quests. Unfortunately there’s also a lot more grind as boss enemies really quickly overpower you in raw stats and will basically stunlock until you’ve spent hours grinding out better equipment and more levels. Worth a playthrough just to see some of the quests though.

There’s also The Hell 2 which is another revamp mod. I don’t care for it because art assets are all over the place and the author is some total aspie ESL who wants everyone to play his OP OC classes.

The Hell 2 adds a lot of cool stuff but is poorly balanced and too grindy.

It is fun on multiplayer though because it makes you actually think about encounters and play as a team. Sorcerers are truly glass cannons and need to do crowd control, rouges pulling with infravision is key due to the difficulty, and warriors actually need to tank.

Diablo I somehow does difficulty better than all its successors by having enemy AI gradually improve as the game goes on while the levels also open up, making it harder to control mobs. But it was also very imbalanced, becoming easy for sorcerers while still challenging and with a high skill ceiling for warriors. TH2 kind of fixed this by making it harder for the other classes due shifting immunities. Also, the need to constantly switch weapons for different enemies or spells is a nice touch if you're not looking for something as relaxed.

Modern ARPGs are just screen filling skill spam. Diablo I had it right with area of effect spells having friendly fire so that you just burn yourself to death by spamming fire walls.

Project Diablo 2 did some interesting stuff with healing and support spells for D2. Something like that would be cool for D1. Heal other isn't that useful but a quick cast AOE heal or reflect would be neat. Curses were one of the coolest things about D2 and it would be cool to see that more in D1. But it just has confuse.

The combat is way better than 2 or 3. It isn't just running around spamming the same skills, you have to at least put some thoughts into what you do as a warrior or rouge.

You mean the combat is the best in the series and the pacing is slow and methodical for the thinking man.

Yes, I know what it means. Again, how are two mouse buttons ancient? Games don't use the mouse anymore?

As someone that was a console player all my life, yes it was jarring playing my first CRPG when I went to try them and I felt the same as OP. It wasn't enough to stop me playing them, but I thought all "action" RPGs were like Devil May Cry or Kingdom Hearts.

Yeah there is, dipshit. This is real important so pay attention. ALL HANDHELD GAMES ARE BAD. You want to lay lazily in your bed and slog through braindead garbage. If the game isn't worth sitting up at your desk for then its bad and not worth playing, let alone inflicting discussion of said game onto others.

The classic ARPG dungeon crawler never dies and Diablo 1's quirks don't undermine the fact that it's one of the purest forms of the genre.
Pic related is its casual clone and also very playable today.

I've played it a few times recently. Good for a walk down nostalgia lane. The tone is unmatched in Diablo games, imo.
