I put it slightly above D2 because of the unique gameplay and atmosphere it brings. At the time when D2 came out, I would've said D2 is hands down better. Today, with so many games that feel like D2, and understanding the trajectory of the genre in hindsight, I say they are both great for different reasons.
D2 does have absolutely godlike visuals, environments, class design, enemy design, lore. It shits all over D3, which is a decent and fun enough but soulless game.
Absolutely not. Diablo 2 took everything good about Diablo and made it even better. Diablo 2 was built upon a solid foundation and was engineered with passion.

1 is my favorite, and while i played 2 first and also enjoyed it a lot, and think it has better mechanics overrall, the smaller scope, heavier atmosphere, and soulful style the game has makes me enjoy it more.
Sad the genre became a overly flashy, soulless loot grind, wiki and calculator games, that look like they're made to addict people instead of being a good experience.

the atmosphere and presentation is better than 2, but the gameplay is not that good. 2 improved on it in virtually every aspect
