This game gets a lot of talk but to this day I don't even know what it is.

To summarize is an extremely open sandbox roguelike jrpg where you can do so many fricking things its insane. Its open world with towns, cities, dungeons and world map and everything moves turn based and, for me, the best part is that its the only roguelike I know that's doesn't have perma death and you are allowed to frick up as much as you want to figure it out and keep growing, also that the towns and cities aren't randomly generated
It's just options, other roguelikes like ToME also let you pick from always revive/limited revives and permadeath.

It plays like a roguelike but it's essentially a free-roam JRPG. You start as a hobo but you can capture monsters, buy and customize your house/farm/shop, work on jobs like being bard or a farmer or a caravan trader, get married with some randomly-generated girl (getting her pregnant creates a NG+ file), grind until you can beat gods, etc. The funny part is that you can do anything with anyone, so you put a ancient dragon to work in your shop, extract milk from a wild e-girl in your farm and get married with the ancient evil that gives everyone magic cancer.
It's also very easy to mod, graphical files are saved in .bmp and companions' dialogues are saved in .txt so you can easily replace the default graphics/tilesets with anything you want.

Elona with proper modern controller support would be the comfiest gaming experience
But Elona already have controller support, you can use the radial menu to access pretty much all action commands.
I've spent days trying to get it to work with my dualsense and every method to.
The radial menu can't do diagonals for some reason

I don't have a Steam Deck but I've seen a video of someone playing random niche games and Elona was working just fine. You can use the game's radial menu to access all action commands with one button instead of putting each action in different buttons.

nothing, i killed all the merchants in stilt and was then invincible. its not a hard game at all. its the easiest and most forgiving roguelike alongside CDDA, because these are games designed to play for many, many hours in a single playthrough where you aren't expected to lose your playthrough at the drop of a hat. in this respect they are barely roguelikes and more along the lines of zoomer crafting survival sandboxes, but turn based.

so then why did you kill the stilt merchants, killing shit there would get you mostly folded carbide level gear, which gets mogged by fullerite which is also magnet immune (and also you get drowned in fullerite since it's carried by templars)
also the stiltgrounds merchants are zone tier 1 so their stuff is all basic level gear, you want to either find merchants in deeper zones or move them there, underground deathlands is ideal but has some annoying mobs

no, you get an assload of equipment like grenades and use it to kill the guards and boss Black person there to get top tier equips. you can then clear all the actual content in the game (there isnt much) or delve to the bottom of the cave system and get godlike equipment. theres no situation in the game where you can realistically die, theres only really like 2 dangerous enemy types in the whole game. the whole appeal of the game is hipsters soifacing over how some randomly generated goat with 2 dicks is deepest lore or whatever, from a complexity standpoint the game is extremely shallow.
the guards carry gear between steel and carbide, the boss priest is mostly naked except for a bunch of guns which are also low tier since you're supossed to recruit and equip him yourself with how easy mechanimist rep is gained
you're better off finding dromads in higher tier zones
you dont need anything more than carbide to beat the game. getting carbide in the first 15 minutes is absurd. you are trying to make it sound harder then it is, but there is no content in the game that warrants high end gear, because again, the devs are more concerned with putting troony shit in the game.

no, you use ranged which is a multiple roll check agi skill or you dismember him, both are extremely consistent. you can also just nade or wall him. used to be able to disarm him while frozen, wouldnt be surprised if you still could.

Yeah ToME is good fun, understandably turns a lot of people off due to no long-term item management though. My favorite character is the paradox mage. I'll throw in my vote to Ragnarok/Valhalla. Lots of stuff to try in that game. DOS-only, unfortunately.

The learning curve is part of the fun. Things like A NUCLEAR DEAD LION are more fun when you look at them and say "what the frick is that thing" and then you die.
Elona+ is a lot more forgiving than the original when it comes to character growth, you can frick up as much as you want and fix your mistakes by living a honest life in Yowyn.
