Because it can't be aired on TV and won't guarantee a bankroll. also because it's good but suffers from the brotherhood effect where you have to say it's the best and there's no room for argument

Can only make that many interesting main character stories with Thor and spoodey until you run out of ideas and comic material.
Focusing on meme side characters either like literal miss Whovel doesn't improve the situation. It ruins the flow, turns standalone movies into something casual that comes out weekly like a comic, and not even good one.
And such casual thing doesn't justify 100m+ budget that they spend on each movie.
Either they release few expensive standalone movies with main characters or a lot of cheap slop, but not release expensive movies in slop numbers.

Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo 2 never ever.

This makes me realize how little games tend to follow the '3-4 people go on a trip' formula anymore. FFXV is the only one I can think of recently and that was... Okay, I guess. Had some really cool shit with the traveling and cooking and stuff that was very cozy, but the main story was weak.

Why do games try and be massive setpieces just over and over? Let me just wander a new land, explore it and get into trouble with a bro or two.

            Anonymous

bebop has such a neat setting, it irritates me to no end that so many try to emulate it but they never bother getting the setting right

              Anonymous

I enjoy it simply for the fact that it just 'is' which is an incredibly rare thing in jap media because they have some kind of pathological need to overexplain everything. In Bebop the characters go to some moon or planet or asteroid and except for some explicit detail or two that is naturally relevant to the plot of the episode they don't start rattling off a wikipedia entry about Europa or Mars or whatever. You gleam what you can from the story told and just enjoy it for what it is then the show moves on. It sounds simple but 99 out of 100 anime series can't accomplish that.

                Anonymous

And the bits of worldbuilding that are explained don't overstay their welcome, like 'oh yeah earth is a shithole cause the company that runs the hyperspace lanes accidentally blew up the moon'

I'll never ever understand why people like that anime. I dropped it when it was airing and later I picked it up because my friend kept gushing about it for years. But it was bad, all the way through. It didn't even try to take its story seriously either, it was like a children's cartoon with no continuity and it wasn't even funny.

I mean it was just annoying. IIRC it was the zombie episode that had some kind of a bad end. So pointless and not even funny.

Good animation, good music, didn't take itself seriously, it was just fun like Panty and Stocking or Inferno Cop.

            >Good animation, good music
Not at all imo, I didn't like Panty either but I haven't seen that cop show. I guess this is just one of those genres that I don't understand the appeal of even though I'm pretty open minded to anime and film in general. I don't like TV series though.

The humor is hit or miss, but I liked the creative spirit of Spacy Dandy. For me there's no cooler idea than the thought of voyaging through the endless void of space with a couple of bros and getting into weird and absurd situations. It's such a particular vibe but so few examples of it. I see it as sort of similar in premise to cowboy bebop but more light hearted. Interestingly enough there's very few games using this sort of generic medieval fantasy world that isekai anime abuses. I'd love a game that's pretty much set in one of those worlds. It is almost by definition wish fulfillment. There's no practical reason for it to be "isekai" instead of just "fantasy" other than to appeal to self-inserters. I've seen a lot of isekai and the MC being from Earth almost never has any actual imoact on the story. You could skip the "reborn with x special ability" aspect of the premise and it would not change the plot (lmao) in any appreciable manner.

I think they do that to force a values contrast (with an "enlightened" protagonist who says free market economics > everything), or to avoid having to explain the outsider protag's home setting in addition to the new one.

            Anonymous

You're ignoring the fact that every isekai protagonist has deeply intimate knowledge of all things modern including, but not limited to, policy, engineering, strategy/tactics, psychology, economics, biology, etc. which they use to great effect.

Alice in Wonderland is a kid's story. It's main appeal is the Seuss-esque rhymes and made up words and the world-building from them, not its narrative structure nor the exploration of Alice, as a character.

According to some, he was a very conflicted about the time period: On one hand Twain seemed horrified not just with medieval brutality, but the medieval mindset about war in general, including chivarly and the ease medieval literature handles violence. At the same time however he was Joan of Arc biggest fan, and couldn't stop obsessing over her to a point in which everyone noticed his deep infatuation.

I understand what you're getting at, but iirc it is the real past in-universe for the story. As such it is the same world, even if the future gets altered by the time traveler's actions. However if it is mirror universe/parallel timeline stuff then I would concede that it is isekai.

I guess Narnia is wish fulfillment or at least escapism, but the fact that it's an isekai is integral and ripples throughout the mythos of the land of Narnia. It's a very interesting way to use the genre.

Isekais, structurally, are rotten to their core. Fundamentally they are about a character abandoning his challenges in life to go be overpowered in a completely unrelated setting. It's a graveyard for character arcs because the main character refuses to grow and is merely living out a power fantasy. Isekais are a chink daydream away from their work-riddled, not a valid story structure.

The situation is actually far worse than people think.

D&D is now insanely popular with zoomers and companies are starting to catch on, pushing it as the next big thing.
E-celebs like Asmongolid has fantasy brainrot and can only these types of games
Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 are two of the biggest games of the last decade. Skyrim refuses to keep selling.
Bethesda's next big game is TESVI
EA is betting Bioware's future on Dragon Age 4
CDPR has an entire new Witcher trilogy planned
Bargain bin trash like Lords of the Fallen can sell 1 million copies in a week simply by being a fantasy soulslike.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is taking inspiration from GTAV and aims to be a massive mainstream hit.
Rockstar themselves have been rumored to be working on their own Grand Theft Dragon for years.

We are about to hit creative bankruptsy levels previously not thought possible.

You're referring to Itsuno praising GTA V for the world feeling alive and specifically independent of player action. Things happen without the player forcing it, like spontaneous police chases, shootouts, animals running into roads etc. He probably wants to recreate that feeling in DD2.

Fricking finally! I thought i was insane because i dropped RDR2 very early on for this exact reason. It felt way more railroaded compared to the original. You'd get a "Mission Failed" screen for walking slightly in a different direction than the quest wanted you to. I noticed it very early in and stopped playing because of that. But when i mention this to other people they always acted like im delusional

One thing old GoW doesn't get enough credit for is just being an actual fricking proper greek fantasy game. Which you would think would be more common but is actually very rare outside of the occasional minotaur and gorgon enemy.

The devs talked about how early in development it was more of a typical medieval fare with Kratos as a more standard barbarian, but they quickly decided the style was just too generic and overdone to be exciting, so somebody suggested greek mythology. I guess Nordic mythology was a logical next step, but too much of that is already present in standard fantasy to be as cool and exciting.

imo, God of War has the same problem Gears of War had. It might've in its day been a pillar for a genre (action beat em ups, and cover shooters respectively), but both got instantly outdone by more refined games with more unique ideas, so they end up falling into generic mediocrity.

Doesn't help that shartfield is a dogshit game at its core.
Also it's easier to do fantasy, because most of these companies just have to copy Tolkien and its derivatives (dnd, warhammer, warcraft) with a couple tweaks, whereas sci-fi doesn't have such an obvious blueprint and requires actual creativity.
Starfield has no soul because it has nothing to rip off.

Agreed. Sci-fi sounds cool in theory but it always feels really hollow to me in the end. I think absurd dreamscapes end up capturing the sense of infinite scale and endless possibilities far better than space/sci-fi does. The idea of limitless space and civilizations that are entirely foreign sounds cool but it alway seems to fall flat and feel uninteresting, at least imo

I think the reason medieval fantasy works is because of a lack of oppressing overarching rules and protocol and government, providing freedom, while still having *some* semblance of society where you can get things you wouldn't be able to get on your own, like say clothes or weapons.

As in, you get a bunch of people, and slaughter the orcs with the weapons you got from doing some quests.

      Anonymous

Crucially, you also get the benefit of firearms not being invented so your character's can use swords and other melee weapons.
The wild west has all those characteristics too, but there are far fewer games and anime set in those days because weapons take a lot of mysticism out of the setting.

Fantasy works because it's so straightforward. Everyone from age of 5 up understands what a dragon is, what a knight is and what a king is.
Combine these archetypes, add made up names and you are ready.

It's like asking when are people going to get fed up of eating bread or bacon, since they're so basic.

No, fantasy (including high fantasy, low fantasy, dark fantasy) is the best setting for gaming possible. For film, TV, and literature, historical (and alternate historical) as well as modern day settings edge it out, but for gaming fantasy reigns supreme. It’s just way too comfy and makes the most sense for incorporating environments that are actually fun to play in as well as mechanics/systems that are enjoyable. Sci fi is fricking gay, but every now and then a developer is confident enough to make a great sci fi game.

I like it but there are some things that rub people the wrong way. It's written by a woman and that becomes REALLY obvious with the side characters and why every character cries every episode. It is unashamed to wear very worn shonen tropes on your sleeve. Pacing can get kinda plodding in the later seasons. If Tanjiro and Nezuko's relationship doesn't do anything for you the the show will get uninteresting real quick. Main antagonist has been written a thousand times before to the point where you can't even see him as a real character. The show kind of just drops its subplot about demons being human and Tanjiro giving them forgiveness in the latesr season and looks to continue that way for the rest of the series.

      Anonymous

No, it just never evolves past that. It's just a lot of animation but no real substance. The characters never change, grow or have any real identity beyond the one trope they are.

This is why I liked the Gothic games so much. You just kinda go places and dick around. No weird explanations, no long-winded monologues, no rules.

Most agree S2 is better. I'm only 6 episodes in but it's a definite improvement.
S1 slumps while they do a typical shonen style competition.

I preferred season 1 a lot, felt like it was a much more polished and thought out product even if the story was much simpler and it was much more 'straightforward shonen' then. The fights are all memorable and extremely well directed and scored, whereas we've had a bunch of really big fights in season 2 and the only good one so far has been the one in the last episode with Choso and Yuji. The OST in the first season is insanely good.

It's just made for morons who need every single thing over explained to them. The more people stop dreaming about the future, the more they will retreat into a fantastical past of ogres and witches.

      I dislike "Smart guy protags".
It always has the issue where, in order to make the smart guy work, you have to make other characters dumber or less observant by contrast. By the end of the show, you have to wonder if the cast is moronic, or if they've just outsourced all thought to "smart guy".
Why didn't X or Y group adopt this clearly-superior means of accomplishing Z, possible using only tools already available to them? Because the smart guy wasn't there to put the pieces together.
Why don't they, after having seen this guy's revolutionary tactics, re-examine their theories?
Because the smart guy patented "thoughtful application of [technique]".
It really feels like author-wank when the main distinguishing feature of his protagonist is that he introduced his high school engineering passion project to the setting, as well.

Maybe I'll make a story about a guy who attached a spring-winder to a cart and managed to perfect the crossbow-reloading process in a way much more expensive than just keeping one more guy around to reload crossbows would.
Maybe I'll make a story where I tell everyone you can run frickhuge amounts of steam through a precisely-machined chassis to automate artisans out of business.
Maybe I'll make a story where my enemies (dumb) grew taxable grains that suited their climate instead of all growing cash crops and outsourcing food production so they can just buy their way to prosperity (lol).
And it'll work, too, because the author thinks it's just the greatest idea ever.

It's likely because, once you've watched enough shonen, seeing the "get stronger montage" doesn't really mean anything. Your issue is not with fantasy but with the uninspired derivative slop nips and westerners produce in equal quantities as a result of their bad consuming habits.

Something worth remembering is that Tolkien wasn't like your modern day turbonerds: He studied lenguage and had a good grasp on mythology, ethnology, history and even theology. He was first and foremost a nerd of the real world and real spirituality, which in turn informed the fantasy he produced.

The same is true for Howard, for Lewis, for Dunsany and even Gene Wolfe: in all cases we see men soaked in real knowledge and real heritage creating worlds that communicate real truths throught fiction. This couldn't be more distant from the present nerds and authors, that largely have no grasp or interest in history and mythology, and therefore no grasp on the trascendental truths that make fantasy worth reading/playing.

      Anonymous

      Spot on analysis.
Would you, therefore, suggest modern authors to revisit old stories more instead of recycling Lotr/Star Wars/etc?

        Anonymous

Yes, absolutely. Good fantasy only comes from appreciation of the real world, with its peoples, histories and religions. Authors need to get out and have contact with tradition and organic culture in order to produce works rooted in the trascendental.

Of course, that's precisely the difficult part: There is not much organic culture left in our world.

See, the problem is that our western modernity has been the result of open social engineering that commodifies everything it touches. The trascendental values that cultures used to have are devoured by the modern machine with nothing left to replace them. It is far, far more artificial than any nation-building project from the human past.

Uncle Ted warned us. Ellul warned us. Humanity is being consumed by forces far greater than any one individual or institution.

That's true and all, but oceans of slop can also banalize the concept.
Now I'm tired by default by this concept, if not fantasy in general. Just as I would be tired by default with a superhero movie, even if done right for once.

That's fair anon. I would recommend you read Gene Wolfe Book of the New Sun, tho, if you want genuinely imaginative sci-fantasy with depth and quality.

Mark Twain was a blue blooded city boy for sure, just have the horse kneel down for you like anything else would so you can sit atop it. Hell, historians used to argue if the stirrup started the medieval era!

          Anonymous

According to some, he was a very conflicted about the time period: On one hand Twain seemed horrified not just with medieval brutality, but the medieval mindset about war in general, including chivarly and the ease medieval literature handles violence. At the same time however he was Joan of Arc biggest fan, and couldn't stop obsessing over her to a point in which everyone noticed his deep infatuation.

          A very peculiar character, really.

Turns out having a utopia where everything works perfectly and there's no petty crime and everyone is super nice means that everyone is going to be tired and depressed as frick.

Still, on average, I bet they're a lot happier than the average imbecile in the UK or US.

            >Turns out having a utopia
You've been meme'd heavily if you really believe this. They have good things going for them but also a very oppresive culture and a bunch of moronic customs. It's not heaven on earth. Also they may be more polite due to the autistic focus on manners and such, but that doesn't mean everyone is nice. A lot of Japanese are extremely superficial and plastic, imagine everyone being entirely fake and insincere at all times.
            >I bet they're a lot happier than the average imbecile in the UK or US
Maybe, but i wouldn't assume it as true without serious investigation. Each has serious pros and also cons

The fact that kids with curly or non-black hair need to do paperwork in order to not be forced to dye it black should be enough to realize how fricked up under the surface nip culture is. Anons unironically think that anime is somehow a reflection of their mindset and not a deliberate, commercial rebellion against those tendencies, an escape from the cyberpunk hellhole their country became.

Still, prolly better than the two Koreas.

From a societal standpoint, yes, it is utopia, and yes, I also said people are miserable because of it.
The food is good, economy is good, petty crime is generally non-existent, their culture is intact, they're not flooded with foreigners, city infrastructure works flawlessly (it's an event if a train is even just a minute late), cities are clean, etc, etc. I could go on.
Obviously they have their problems, like I said, such as people never speaking their mind, work culture being complete cancer, and a lot of japanese being more or less socially autistic because of these things. Also their TV is ass. And this is talking about city life, life in the countryside is much better.

It is incomparable with your average american shithole city with homeless everywhere, trannies shitting up every facet of society, school shootings, crime everywhere, nogs nogging, and all led by a guy who genuinely probably can't get dressed by himself. I don't think there's even a comparison. What is even a single good thing about America or most western countries these days? There's absolutely frick all going for them.

I'm not even a weeb. Even Thailand is heaven on earth compared to the US.

Are you going to make an actual point anytime soon or just going to argue semantics. Yes, utopia means it's perfect and everyone is happy and that's not obviously the case, we're not children, you should be able to infer my point.

                >their culture is intact

Anon, are you really sure about that? Keep in mind, the mere preservation of external rites and traditions doesn't necessarily means that a culture is alive: Culture goes deeper than mere religion and festivities, into matters like worldview and actual spirituality. For a culture to be preserved the mindset of the ethnic group in question must be aligned with it.

As far as I have seen nips are nihilistic, capitalistic, westernized asians that still preserve some of their ancient drappings. It matters little if they still talk about yokai, kitsunres or whatever when in practice their entire way of life is a product of western modernity.

                Anonymous

I don't think culture has anything to do with spirituality, for one. It's a complicated question regarding the definition of culture and spirituality that I think is going off-topic. But in regards to world views and ways of life:

                >Nihilistic
I don't see where you're seeing this. Maybe CEOS, the upper class and politicians, but that was always the case.
                >Capitalistic
Again, I don't think this is necessarily any different than it ever was. Japan was always a feudal/caste based society, capitalism is basically the same thing, just modern. It's less them changing and more just the times changing. You can't expect us to keep doing shit like hunting and foraging for own food when tech makes it so we don't have to. That's just the world advancing, not the culture.

                >Westernized asians
I don't agree. Obviously some degree of westernization is always going to happen since America is still the media capital of the world (for some fricking reason) but do you think if you go and ask the average Japanese person about trans people, you'd get anywhere near the same 'walk on eggshells' response that you'd get in western countries? Or that their media is glorifying murder/robbery/drugs and women being prostitutes? Or, most of all, that the individual is all that matters and we should cater to everyone individually, no matter how moronic and inconvenient that gets? Not at all.

I don't think Japanese people are westernized at all. I'm sure some would, at least publically, share some 'progressive' world views, but in what they say and do, they're largely the same as they've always been, largely repressed, xenophobic, collective-facing. Again, not all of them, there's always exceptions and rebels and all that, but as a society, that is how it is.

                >What is even a single good thing about America
You've got me there. I couldn't list anything objective tbh. But after traveling a bit i actually have found myself with more appreciation for US, maybe just because its what I'm familiar with. Objectively speaking i can't say much good about US. I think it's good if you are wealthy, but otherwise you probably get much higher quality of life in other places. This is the great secret that a lot of people never got to learn because of "greatest country in the world" propaganda.
