Is FF13 worth playing?
When it came out I remember everyone made fun of how shit it is, but since video games get worse every year, I've played quite a few games from back then and they held up great

Sure, it cuts out some of the time-wasting mechanics you typically find in JRPGs and is generally a beautiful game.

Absolute trash for the first 30 hours, but once the game opens up it's great. Only play this if you're a "do eveything the game has to offer to kill the superboss" kind of person

It's not bad especially as you can probably get it cheap somewhere. It's very linear and you can only directly control one character in combat but I liked the real-time/turn-based mix combat

It's a game that you play solely for its aesthetics and combat. The story is a mess in how it's presented, the party suffers from a bad script and the exploration is limited to hallways and never going back to previous locations. If you're okay with the above and a great soundtrack, go for it

How? The way the party dynamic constantly changes is incredible. I swear I play different games to Ganker

It fricking sucks bro. Typical sentimental over-emoting schlock you expect from Japan with awful gameplay where you're walking down empty hallways for 30hrs. Then the "open world" is tiny with almost nothing to do. The game feels empty, the storytelling is awful and the characters are bland. I really wanted to like this back in the day. Coming from 12, it was complete bunk.

it´s not that i enjoyed xii but come on, you can explore a shitton in xii, you got interesting sidequests, monsterspawns depending on weather, a decent endgame with interesting superbosses and fricking fran.
She alone carries that game above the shitfest what xiii is.
despite xii being the weakest of the modern fantasies, it´s still FF while every entry afterwards mutated more into a western movie experience.
until FF9 you got the classical FFs which all of them where fantastic.
X and XII are experimental which are fine somewhere but xiii really jumped the shark in the name of pandering to the west.
the LV collabartion with lightning was all you need to know about the direction FF took.

It's utter garbage in the story department and full of endless shitty corridors. The map opens up in chapter 11, but it's dogshit. Only play this if you really want to see some good visuals and music. Otherwise; garbage! Absolute dogshit trash.

1, 7, 10, 12, 13 are all worth playing. 13 gets hate because people don't take 5 minutes to learn how to use the paradigm shifting and you don't get most of the combat system unlocked for many hours. It's the usual JRPG bullshit.

All the male characters in the game blow chunks, besides Zasz(or whatever his name is). Hope is a complete annoying b***h I hated seeing on screen, and the other white guy is just a douchebag that Hope hates. Zero reason to like either of the 2 white males in the cast. I can't remember anyone's names, but the black guy at least has a personality and the chocobo living in his hair.

All the girls are great, though. They have actual personalities.

You unlock the ability to grind your way into changing character classes, but they do shoehorn some classes to some characters, so I was forced to use Hope due to his abilities, which was very frustrating, given how lame he was as a character. I don't think anyone modded this game to fix that, but to get things like Haste or build your team a certain way, you might be forced to use some of the terrible characters that ruin the vibe. It takes a lot of grinding to force some characters to other classes.

Hope's mom dies 2 seconds into the game, and that's his character the entire rest of the game. Hope blames the tall white guy for not saving his mom and that's their character dynamic for the first 30 hours. Those 2 characters don't do anything interesting and it destroyed any motivation to like those 2 as I never looked forward to hearing updates on how angry Hope was, or how ignorant and overconfident the big white guy was being.

TL;DR - Hope and the other white guy are total trash characters story-wise and that was my biggest gripe. The game is just as good as any other long jrpg. When someone bashes this game, just point to any of the other annoying dumb shit their favorite JRPG does. FF13 is good. Play it.

I got a new computer, so I'm replaying the game for the first time since it came out on PS3. It's pretty much exactly how I remember it, and my opinion has not changed. The first 3 hours of the game is just cutscenes and autobattle until the paradigm system is introduced.

Yes. I had always stayed away from the PC port because it was bad at launch, but I guess a 4070 just brute forces its way through any problems. I think they must have updated the pre-rendered video files at some point as well because the game is 54gb now, and they look fine to me. My only complaint is that you have to have a controller plugged in or the game maxes out at 58fps. Which wouldn't be a big deal, but the game has no controller button prompts.

I have a friend who games exclusively on PC and he always complains when a game requires a controller, because he refuses to buy a controller.

It's 100% his fault, you know, playing console games on PC and complaining about how it requires an input device that has analogue inputs like thumbsticks the game was built with. It takes additional work to add things like mouse+kb support and all the additional UI/text work like adding all new button prompts and also allowing rebinding of keys(because you wouldn't hear the end of it if you couldn't do that).

My friend HATES devs for not putting in the extra 100's of hours to add m+kb support for their console games. He HATES that he needs to buy a single wired Xbox360 controller 10 years ago. He HATES that he is FORCED to use anything that isn't a mouse and keyboard. It's funny because I don't care at all because it's 100% is fault and his complaints are completely idiotic.

It's a console game. Frick off you PC shitheads. You have to be a total piece of shit to buy a GPU or build a PC and not buy a controller or complain about games requiring a controller.

I bought 2 wired Xbox 360 controllers for my laptop when I discovered emulation. I still haven't worn out the first one. The second one is mint, because the first one is still fully functional. Those things last forever. I have burned through at least 4 keyboards and mouses since then. I love my PC, but my "PC master race" friend is a closed-minded idiot who ignores facts.

            Anonymous

Definitely need to strip those 100 hours away from improving the rest of the game to help add the shitty inferior input method the game was not built for because some cheap idiots refuse to buy a standard video game input device. PC Master Race ftw!!!!

      Anonymous

FF13's plot "not making sense" doesn't really matter, because the characters aren't compelling or interesting enough to carry the story anyway. You won't be rooting for anyone, besides the females. Zasz isn't totally annoying, but he really isn't interesting, either. It's just a JRPG. Most of them have bad characters that drag down any "good" story.

Bullshit. 13's cast is one of the most likable bunch in general, and all of them go through some legit character development to boot. Snow is still my ultimate vidya bro of all time.

Absolutely not. All the guys saying "its a great game when it opens up" are coping. Everything about it is mediocre trash. Story, chracters, music, cities (lol), voices, level design, party building, skills, art style, direction. It is complete garbage. And so are the 2nd and 3rd part.
It is so soulless, especially compared to older entries, it irreparably damaged the franchise.
So much that they need to remake older entries to not be completely forgotten and hated.

In most JRPGs you grind through the rigid and tedious combat and menu gameplay to unlock novel and engaging storytelling but XIII has none of that.

    >Is FF13 worth playing?
Yup. It really isn't as bad as people say.
I personally picked it up for dirt cheap in the early 2010s, despite having heard all sorts of shit about it.

The BEGINNING really didn't even try to prove all the bad claims about it wrong, but luckily, to my own surprise as well, the more I played, the more entertaining and hooking it became. It's not GOTYAY or best JRPG ever in any sense, but it's FAR from the "worst crap ever" -category. A solid 7/10 experience IMO.

The sequels fixed, expanded and improved many things, especially pacing and gameplay. Up to you whether you like the direction they went with the plot and cast, but they're not hideous either. FF13-2 was simply fun, easily 8/10 at least, and made the OG feel like a tutorial and "chapter 1" of something bigger. However, it was the LR which I found to be a complete blast, and easily my 2014's GOTY.

Lightning Returns has great gameplay, I just jumped straight into that and I'm having a ton of fun.
