Honestly I don't know about that. There was naturally a lot more story hype for EW. Dawntrail will likely have much better sub retention due to the wealth of content promised, but I think overall sales is not a guarantee.

Except XI didn't drop subs when WoW came out, it only dropped when SE tried to push XIV 1.0 out. Despite the sales number being wrong it's officially stated by SE to be the most profitable among the series until XIV eventually outperformed it, which says a lot.

FFXIV is a game you play for the story. The best time to sub is a 2 month period between the end of X.55 and X.0, allowing you to catch up on everything you missed while enjoying the opening month of the expansion with everyone else.
what is the EASIEST job to play to recommend to a new player?
Marauder, which becomes Warrior.
It's a tank, meaning you get fast queue times, it does okay damage, and past level 56 it CANNOT die unless you fall asleep at the wheel.
All of the starting classes, including conjurer as long you as you understand that being a healer is about spending GCDs on dealing damage as much as possible.
Samurai is the easiest job but it's locked at Lv50
Arcanist for DPS, Conj for Healer and Marauder for Tank
ACN > SMN pipeline, pre-50 almost all of the classes/jobs are braindead though. If you want the absolute easiest class to start with its probably ARC although BRD gets tricky later on

Go get a leve from Ishgard for the Hinterlands, I think it's called Dance Magic Dance or something along those lines. Start it, fly around looking for a treasure chest, which will have a vilekin. Whether you find a chest or not, don't finish the leve. Just keep abandoning and resetting.

I've played this game since 1.0 closed beta, so yes I was. And again, if we accept that HW is shit, why do you think this excuses EW? EW is supposed to improve upon the past but it failed in every single regard.
I was, actually. It was so bad that I swore I would quit unless 3.2 ended up being good. Wouldn't you know it? 3.2 gave us one of the best raid tiers the game has ever seen in Midas and wasn't beaten until Eden's Verse. Hell, I still remember all of the b***hing about how DRK-centric Gordias/Midas were because PLD couldn't block magic. That was changed in 3.4 though with Creator, though. I also remember deathmarch grinding the i240 step for the DRK Anima in ARF.
I also remember questioning what the point of the WoD mini-arc was and being mad about how blatantly obvious it was that Urianger was A) the "traitor" and B) never actually betrayed us at all. Good thing we got a massive payoff for that arc in ShB, huh? I remember "skip soar or disband" and farming Zurvan EX and the shitshow that followed it. I remember the fit people threw because Infinity pt 2 didn't have lyrics, with people saying that the final trial of an expansion NEEDED to have lyrics or else it was a shit theme.
Oh, and I also remember being mad as hell about how bad Eureka Pagos was in SB compared to how leisurely Anemos was. Pagos was staggeringly anti-player in its launch state with the massive level gaps between aetheryte crystal access and the irritating choke points guarded by max level dragons that one-tapped you until you were also max level. I also remember falling in love with the Elemental armor/weapons when Pyros landed, and I remember how everyone loved and experimented with Logos actions. I remember trying to farm for the Speed belt and Cassie's earring, too.
You don't get those memories by being a bandwagon rider who jumped on due to the WoW influx in ShB. You also don't get almost 1000 days of playtime by jumping on that late, either.

I fully expect Dawntrail to sell less than Endwalker simply because Endwalker was the end of the main story. It's an "ending" where people can feel like they beat the game and is over.
