It's funny how much people talk about theme park games. What roles and worldbuilding does it have? How many activities lead to status? Are items losable so that risk:reward is exciting? Can players craft gear and go out to get equipment that lets them attack groups because of better abilities and via skill? Can areas be controlled for resources? Can you hire combatants and gatherers because the economy is that important?

They really, really need to fix the pacing. I’m giving this game an honest, genuine try as a JRPG thing, like people said, and it’s such a slog.
I’m about halfway through the ARR post patch (just beat Ramuh, already did Crystal Tower), and only CT and the refugee plot have been interesting. There’s needs to be either a focus on the Ascian and Echo stuff, or the refugee stuff. The primals are boring. It’s always

ARR is a bit slow and the post patch is just boring and tiring, honestly they probably need to make a truncated "ARR story recap" questline and let new people skip straight to HW eventually.
The primal of the week is just a framing device for introducing the actually important shit. Everything you've seen going on between the primal battles is the set up for the rest of the game.
The primals are actually shit and they realize this which is why that plotline massively falls out of favor once Heavensward hits.
Starting from Heavensward the primals pretty much just become roadblocks on the way to what you're actually trying to do rather than being the main focus.
You are actually right on the cusp of it picking up and escalating rather hard.
You're correct, and it sucks, but you're at the worst paced part of the entire game. Post-ARR is the great filter. Sadly the friends I started playing with quit just before entering Ishgard where it picks back up.
Reworking those patches (and a few other bits of ARR) should be a very high priority for the dev team.
They already did rework it tho. If it’s still filtering everyone, I don’t get what else can be done.

Post-ARR is notoriously slow as shit. The transition into Heavensward is worth it.
Did they revamp any of the old Relic weapons to be less grindy? If not, then frick off. ARR Relics are insane and the fact you have to do it more than once is mind numbing. I hear Heavensward is similar.
Hey we're at the same point more or less. IMPORTANT , it won't be any part of your MSQ but DO BINDING COILS OF BAHAMUT COMPLETELY BEFORE FINISHING ARR POST PATCH. Seriously, you'll get some Alisaie kino and it is the only storyline that actually explains what happened at the end of 1.0 / The Battle of Carteanu Fields. You can do it unsync'd with a guildmate at 90 if you want, but still do it for the story and the graphical set fun stuff.
Also don't forget to do EX Primals if you think the regular ones are boring. Some of them have some great mechanics to teach you how to work together. Not to mention the audio on them is fantastic, some more so than others. Shiva is noteworthy and is coming up for you (ie the "music change" coincides with Phase 3). . Also don't forget that to unlock them you need to go back to the Waking Sands and see Urangier again at the right point post doing the normal/hard version to get the EX. Also don't forget to talk to the "bard who looks suspiciously like a developer" in Mor Dhona near the new Scion HQ to unlock special events (ie after you beat 2.0, he will unlock a fanciful EX version of the Ultima Weapon fight)
Lastly, do your Beast Tribes while you can! There are 4 core tribes and 1 crafting one per expansion, they operate as "dailies" do them now. You';ll ahve new ones every expansion so do the existing ones and complete them if you can. Whenever you start doing crafting/gathering, DO THE IXAL BEAST TRIBE DAILIES before you get your professions to 50. It will give you a frickton of experience and be useful to your DoH leveling. You can do it afterward but its not as useful and uses old materials. I'm kinda sorta newly returning myself but good luck1!

If you give a shit about the story, FFXIV has a frickload of things that only happen in cutscenes based on what you did previously or refer back to them etc. FOr instance, my ARR scenes were different than yours in some ways (ie Minfilia and Cid remembered me, among others from before the calamity) because I played during 1.0 (I hhave a "legacy mark" on my neck). The boss of the 2nd phase of the Binding Coil of Bahamut has a special line because I was the one that foiled his shit back in his previous form. Instead of riding in to start the game on a cart or ship after character creation for ARR, I basically "portaled in" picking up after Louisouix portaled everyone out during Carteaneau (look at the ARR opening movie for this)
So anyway, stuff you do matters. Like, I'm told that leveling Dragoon to 50 and finishing its class quests to those points gets you a neat reference and cutscene in Heavensward. After all, things will be different if you never met Estinian and you're not the Azure Dragoon etc vs if you are. There's other stuff like this too, some anons may have some other advice. Finish BCOB before Heavensward is another as it means that you and Alphinaud / Alisaie are "in on a secret" that others may not know if you didnt' do this etc. There's other shit too so others can weigh in on "do X before y" you learned.
What's wild is what you're currently going through is the ABRIDGED version of what it used to be. It used to be so much longer, really pushing that whole "with Garleans recent defeat, we can now relax" vibe of nothing of note really happening.

frontline PvP is the proper combination of great and awful. CC is pretty tight and fast, you're dependent on your moron team but most of the classes are fun.
Also completely gear-agnostic
PvP mechanically is good but suffers from balance issues. Namely all the melee dps classes (besides reaper) being really overtuned and having too much survivability for how much damage they do. White Mage is also hilariously op compared to the other healers, namely because it once again does too much damage and CC. Playing a tank, especially gunbreaker, is trolling unless you are abusing the Paladin cover/invuln strat.
You'll enjoy PvP if you play NIN/MNK/DRG/SAM/BLM/WHM, you'll hate it otherwise.

NIN and DRG are everywhere in PvP, pretty much every CC game is a mirror matchup between 2 ninjas and 2 dragoons, bonus points for 2 white mages
Its a weird thing: Every job in PvP seems hard designed around being able to move around quickly, blow your load and LB to delete another player from existence. Yet the job I always come back to and even play just to relax in CC these days is Scholar.
the problem is that I feel like kill potential is almost entirely based around your LB, if you aren't playing a class that has an instant kill, high potency attack or invulnerability mechanic as their LB, the class just isn't that great. Some classes just have no kill pressure, and some classes have too much.
Yeah, I almost stopped playing it entirely because I felt I wasn't doing much to help. But when I get a good team to support and the enemy team matches us in skill I actually feel like the team's backbone making sure adlo is up to protect against 100% hp attack, everyone has catalyze for the damage, I time DT to hit as many as possible with Biolyse, use Expedient to quickly move in and hit whoever my team is focusing with Mummify and time Seraph for when we are making a push. Less Bursty than the rest of them and more "death by a thousand cuts" type of playstyle.
Then we hit overtime and we might win or they might win, but it doesn't matter because it was a good match. Im surprised still they greenlit Scholar as this kind of support-oriented compared to every other job, but I enjoy the hell out it for now and one I want to continously improve to play well.MSYVSK

No, it's worse. Melee have so much base damage reduction it takes too long to kill one person. The changes to charging limit breaks were understandable, but now it takes too fricking long to kill people again and it sucks.

Normal raids don't give weapons, they give upgrade materials for the high-tier tomestone weapons and on a weekly lockout. There is a Genji (savage) katana but no Genta (normal) katana, for example.
The glow will be on the normal versions too.
You won't be able to get the weapons though unless you do savage.
The savage versions are dyable, there is nothing stating that the glows are savage only.
There are no normal versions for Savage weapons.
You can still have glowing armour without the weapon moron.

I cleared O8S and E12S before I decided that the shit was just pattern recognition and remembering invisible AoEs and dropped the game soon after. I don't care about impressing you literal trannies.
The devs are so shitty and incompetent that they cannot make the animations match up with the hits so the only way you can possibly avoid attacks is with the moron circles. Seriously, there are bosses who can do a massive wave attack and the animation clearly hits everyone but because they weren't standing on the orange spot before it disappeared no one takes any damage. It's so incompetent it's almost hilarious.
Nothing feels worse than avoiding the attack animation but still taking damage because you were still in the orange circle when the castbar fills.

How would you know to avoid generic aoes then? Usually in high end fights with no markers the aoes are extremely specific so you can learn the safe spot or have some kind of flaming orb/rock/whatever to denote that it's a bomb. If the game just started throwing out random generic aoes with no indication the fights would get rather annoying.
Other mmos do it fine by giving the bosses tells based on their animations. Like how AV used to do until it got changed for babies.
Many bosses in FF14 also have animation-based attacks later in the game. Not everything is an aoe marker.
Some bosses still have cleave windups, and the AV boss is the only one I can think of that had only windups for all of its aoes.

Doesn't the fact that XIV is a slower game where attacks have more wind up make markers even less sensical? You already have a massive time window to identify that the enemy is getting ready to attack and what attack it's doing, the marker is just patronizing at that point.

Theres been multiple times, even on full servers like Balmung, where new wards and entire new cities of housing were added to just go get all day long. Yeah, I'm maybe at the very beginning of Heavensward atm and whenever I do Extreme encounters on Duty Finder I usually find that my biggest weakness, right now at least is keeping track of my abilities and timers on DNC.

You'll make it, just focus on improving yourself and finding people you like raiding with. Eventually one thing will lead to another.
Better start turning into a parsetroony
Learn your rotation until it's muscle memory so you can focus on the fight. There's rarely any aoe indicators. Sometimes they will appear last second to show you how big they are/if you are in the right spot. Cast bars are your best friend, make sure your enemy list is easy to look at.
I'd also highly recommend at least eating food. If you can afford or craft them, pots when you're ready to clear. Pugs suck and the more damage you can push to compensate for their brain damage the better. If you get into a static almost everyone of them will require food and pots anyway.

Content-wise yes, gameplay-wise no. There are so many blatent problems with FF14 compared to most mmo's but the "non-toxic" FF14 playerbase will foam at the mouth like rabid dogs if you say anything negative at all. What gameplay problems? Let me name a few:
1. clunky and unresponsive as frick. The game has a polling rate of like 0.5 seconds so your character has actual brainlag before processing your input
2. old, outdated, painful control mechcanics. If you strafe and cast an ability your character will recenter to face the mob and run straight into it which breaks your stafe. You literally have to jump and cast to prevent this moronic interaction from happening and this game has been out for hoe many years?
3. animations fricking suck. Every ability no matter how small is a firework show who's animations have no internal rime or reason regarding shape or color. It's just random LSD trips on your screen that don't match the ability of even when the damage actually happens. The animations are so disconnected from when the damage actially applies.
4. tab-targetting logic is fricking aweful in FF14. Say what you will about wow bit at least they put some effort into making sure you generally tab-target to mobs that are actually in combat with you and aren't on the otherside of the room minding their own business. The amount of fricking ninja-pulls through this is insane. I was actually paranoid when switching target and had to double check every time. And no, the other settings don't fix it.
I could go on but FF14 stans are gonna rage anyways and (you) me with 0 arguments so I'll leave it at that.

Some people just get distracted more easily than others. I like to talk during DSR prog but noticed people making lots of mistakes when I did, so I try to stop or at least keep my talking within P2 and shutting up when Nidhogg drops.

This is a bigger problem for tanks and healers, DPS jobs barely play the same.
when you dive into theorycrafting a little you start to realize dps jobs still play almost the same, they're just better at hiding it
they all follow the same formula of a 2-3 step main loop, a 30s secondary loop, and a 60/120s burst window
some jobs are just able to obfuscate that by hiding it behind a gauge or something
can you elaborate on that a bit?
my experience with wow is limited to getting up to onyxia with warlock on a private server a bunch of years ago so I'm curious how ffxiv job philosophy differs from that of classes in other MMOs
for WoW specifically it's a lot of minor factors
class design suffers from some similar flaws, like that the majority of classes focus around a central builder-spender mechanic with a 2-3 minute burst cooldown
the differences between classes come largely from changing up the main loop and what kind of utility they can bring
for example, ret paladin and enhancement shaman are all about juggling short cooldowns to fill up a counter of some kind
however, paladin is very deterministic whereas enhancement is fishing for procs
and both of those play very differently from a rogue, which is managing energy and combo points rather than cooldowns

I believe he's referring to the crit and direct hit changes (buffs).
Any class that had skills that guaranteed crit/direct hit is now eatin good, since stats and buffs will now increase the damage of those skills.
Dancer is the only phys ranged that has an ability that buffs DH/Crit to 20%.
And a guaranteed crit attack on top of that.
Since they're buffing DH/Crit actions and buffs it's going to be too powerful especially if you partner a SAM that has quite a few guaranteed crits too.

You can get the armor from normal raids - No need for savage unless you want dyeable versions.
