I played through FFXVI and the story was the most unacceptably rancid piece of dogshit I've ever seen from a game, no exaggeration. Just all the worst aspects of bad fantasy writing blended into a single unending abomination. I was actually interested in XIV before this and I am seriously reconsidering putting any time or money into it. So are the people praising XIV the same braindead morons praising XVI or is it actually good like I've heard people say?

It's bogged down heavily by the fact that it's still an MMO story though with all the problems that come with the format.
There are some good bits in Heavensward, otherwise it's just another FF story. If you like FF stories you'll like this one. Otherwise just play the game for social reasons.

Honestly I haven't played XVI (thanks, Sony), but I do think XIV has a good story. Good doesn't mean perfect though, the fact it's an MMO means it's stretched as frick and has lots of filler, when people say it's good they mostly mean that the parts of the story that matter are good. Honestly the climactic parts that culminate a story or another, the parts that actually flesh out the major characters and villains, and possibly some of the more minor stuff if it just happens to hit you in the feels will be great, the parts that are just fetch quests and "go talk to an npc to then go talk to another npc to talk to another npc so he can give you an item for the first npc" will bore you.
And of course it has several writers so occasionally you find a story that's just flat out bad. Those aren't too common though and honestly they're sparse enough that they mostly just serve to give the players something to lambast for fun.

You go to a new world where your friends were there for 1 - 5 years and established themselves in that world as mercenaries, clan leaders, and rebels. They aren't an interesting bunch, but ShB brings the best in them.
You are accompanied by a crestfallen warrior of light ghost, who is by far the best character in the entire game.
The main villain's ideology cannot be refuted, even the main character struggles to find a reason to stop him. The ending area along with the final cutscene and ending are all top tier, boasted by amazing one-liners.
The funny thing is that all of this was written by a woman and localized by a woman, while Yoshida "A team" where deep in the trenches making that shitty FF16.
Even still, I wouldn't recommend the 500 hours to finish XIV unless you'll binge in 2 weeks, and even then it isn't worth it.

I got tired of every new area you visit forcing you on a tour of the town and its NPCs for several mandatory quests every single time. And this is the problem with XIV (and XVI). They do shit like this to pad instead of giving you more interesting gameplay sections, mini dungoens, etc. XVI is especially bad for not having other characters playable in their own missions. Instead the last half of the game is you roleplaying as "cid the outlaw" under an ugly purple sky.
This is unforgivable since even XIV from the same team has playable story characters, and guests in parties have been a thing since FF2 with many games after splitting the party and having you play as different people.
That's every expansion though.

What? Heavensward was the 2nd best expansion in terms of gameplay, 2nd to Stormblood. The classes were all fricking hard to play, but extremely rewarding for mastering them. Raiding was no joke either, even savage difficulty rivaled Ultimates. This was back when the game actually asked you to fricking play it instead of raid logging. Not in an oldschool wow time vampire way, but in a way that commanded your respect and attention. Heavensward was a great expansion, although I do think that the story is very overrated. Ysayle disappears halfway thru the story and only shows up just to die at the end lmfao, great character guys.

I am playing XIV right now, I decided to pick it up after finishing XVI.
I have finished ARR and just finished Heavensward and I feel like people have overrated it quite a bit to me considering all the shit I heard XIV players on Ganker talking about XVI's story and praising HW over that when Heavensward is not really that well written and I think noticeably worse writing than XVI towards the end of the main HW story, it gets better in the Post-Heavensward Dragonsong story though. I hear it supposedly gets amazing in Shadowbringers?
It's not BAD mind you, but Heavensward wasn't this epic masterpiece of FF writing that people made it out to be to me before playing it, it's worse written than XVI.
It's good, but not mindblowing. ARR kinda sucks not gonna lie, Heavensward is an enormous step up from that.
A Realm Reborn was boring to go through until you get towards the end. But I get it, you can't just jump in as some grand hero but the ramp up to realm hero feels very sudden. I guess it doesn't feel like we do more errand work than actually get involved in Eorzea. Go kill primal okay now go kill this primal great. Doing this back and forth until the Garleans decide to do it for you. But that's a nono so then you get to stop them. The sidequests in ARR are great though. Bahamut was a nice wrap up of 1.0 (watch a video on it). Gilgamesh was fun. And the job quests feel more important than the MSQ. Heavensward and beyond you can tell the dev team figured out what worked and what didn't so the stories are more streamlined and less chorey. You begin to follow an actual plot through each region, but it does end up feeling like there's less point to each new area. This is more evident in Stormblood, when the primals and dungeons in that area feel like roadblocks than actual progression of the story. Shadowbringers did everything right. It finally gave us a purpose and made the world building pay off more. Unlike ARR, the new world we explore feels like an actual adventure and not just every regions chore b***h.
It's a shame all of this got shit on by Endwalker. It's not that Endwalker is bad. By all means it was a nice conclusion, but it definitely feels like different writers worked on the two expansions, so many tones and events feel like they don't align. Zenos is a perfect example of a character constantly changing with each expansion. He's a great character but just all over the place in his actions.

WHM has the right idea but they need to take it further, it needs to be a frickhuge DPS gain to unleash the back deck spell you get for spending your heals. Same with DRK and TBN, just getting one extra Edge is lame, give them a really big frick off button for proper TBN application.
Maybe one edge for popping the bubble and a whole Delirium if it's popped by one attack, or have two bubbles like a crit from sge or sch where you get cd reduction on carve or shadowbringer or something.

I want them to feel different from each other. SCH can have the oppositional kit where you make choices between healing and damage, WHM rewarded for spending lillies like you say, SGE rewarded for high uptime, maybe AST rewarded for being attentive with some procs.

Anon, if I want to play a single player RPG I'll play any of the previous FF games (minus FF11) I'm here to play the game for a multiplayer experience, not just trials, raids, dungeons but everything and the game is really not encouraging that right now. For the last year and a half I'd say the focus has been so hard on the Trust system for "future proofing" and neglecting the MMO side of the game.
I haven't met a single person who uses fricking Trust system outside of mouth breathers. I don't know why you are crusading against this feature in particular when the crux of the problem is an insipid post expac and a game left in autopilot because "it's ok to play other games!". Eureka and Bosnia at least helped keeping the game alive between patches

It's not about people using it or not, it's that there is development time and resources being used to go through every single dungeon and then trials to rework them for npc parties, it's the development time this focus on being single player accessible which is what I'm so against.
If someone can't get into a dungeon then that creates opportunity for them to interact with other people, that's the point of an mmo.
Yoshida though for some reason has it in his head that this "problem" should be solved through making the game Singleplayer instead of it being an opportunity for social interaction in an mmo, god forbid that happens.
So for brevity, what I'm saying is this problem can be summarised in two parts
1: is the development time and resources being used to continue Trust systems throughout the game, that time and resources could be used elsewhere, to me it's completely wasted.
2: is the culture of making the game Singleplayer proof, it should be absolutely ok that an MMO has parts of it which you can't access without interacting with others, if you can complete the game solo then at that point it is not an MMO, you're playing a Singleplayer RPG, this is creating an identity crisis for the game. It's not there yet but it's getting there.
Well the good news is that they've caught up on the whole game at this point so they don't have to continue squandering dev time on that shit.
I still hate that it exists, but I hope you're right that they've stopped focusing on expanding the system and leave it alone with regards to the trials and raids.
I usually use Trusts my first time through a new dungeon so I can take my time and enjoy the setpieces instead of just amd dash pull but not really beyond that. It's a decent feature but they've had to pour too much time and work into it.

I'm mixed on this opinion, even though its one I share. On one hand I can appreciate that people who care about the world/characters first are able to get through expansions with Trusts and can test out the more """"anxiety"""" inducing jobs like tanks/heals with npcs to get a feel for it. On the other I absolutely hate how lonely this game feels for an mmo. Its a solo game that you can sometimes play with other people if you feel like it. I can do that with shit like monster hunter and I sure as frick don't need to pay a monthly fee to do it. And I understand that appealing to the more casual-friendly audience is whats going to do the game the most "good" in terms of prolonging its lifespan but I dunno. I still hate it

The 200 hours of MSQ cutscenes really is dogshit. It has its moments, but the vast majority is unvoiced, unsouled garbage. It reminds me of high school essays where students have to add "fluff" to reach some arbitrary word count, without having any substance.

The ARR story is bad and doesn't know what it's trying to accomplish most of the time. The Scions basically do nothing and get celebrated for it, it's weird. In their defence it was written very fast to try to rescue the game.
HW is pretty cool but spoiled by dogshit pacing and late rewrites to some major characters (Ysayle and Aymeric are completely different to how ARR patches set them up). Remembered very fondly for maybe a hour of content total (a campfire scenes and Final Steps).
StB is again ruined by awful pacing and doesn't get going at all until half way through the expansion, then has to rush through for a grand triumphant finish that feels unearned. I like Lyse though so it's still one of my favourites.
ShB is great, starts really strong and maintains great momentum until it shits the bed with Ancients chosen one homosexualry in the last hour or so. Best expansion story but also ruined the story going forward.

Story, lore and worldbuilding is great but it's nothing special at first, very slow paced until you start reaching Heavensward.
Sadly most cutscenes are a borefest because you see the same emotes over and over and they are, at most, just serviceable, so it does drag it all down a couple notches.
Characters are ok but my only problem with "The Scions" is that they are a bit too awesome and cool, for example, Y'shtola, , Papalymo,Urianger, Krile and Alphinaud are all "the smart genius" one while Thancred and Estinien are both "the cool one" and Alisaie and Lyse are both "The tomboy". Not to mention there could be more diversity in terms of race within that same cast, most of them being white-haired Elezen.

That said, its still a hundred times more compelling than any other MMO's plot by virtue of being something resembling an actual story, and sometimes things are halfway to a passable piece of fiction and it gets you interested in whats going to happen next.

The entire Void storyline is pretty clearly a Trial series pulled into the MSQ to pad out time, if you look at the plot as a whole the beginning of 6.1 pretty much lines up perfectly with where 6.55 is going, this whole Void shit is obviously going to end up pretty self contained in the end. It has some very good moments but most of it is not for everyone. A good chunk is heavily inspired by realism/naturalism (Maupassant, Proust, Zola etc) which tell very worldly subjects, that's not everyone's cup of tea and could be seen as boring filler. I personally respect and enjoy those references, most gaming writers haven't read the real OGs that built modern storytelling enough.

It's fine in general, has some really good moments. As far as MMO's are concerned it is probably the best your going to get really story wise. Unless you're interested in playing an MMO, I would not recommend playing FFXIV solely for the story.

ARR is good for world building but is standard fair. Gaius is pretty based though.
HW is a good story.
SB is an okay story but is the better expansion because the gameplay improves by leaps and bounds in literally all facets. All of them. From pissant dungeon boss all the way to the top at savage / ultimate. Also the Monster Hunter collab is kino.
ShB is strong as frick and consistently strong through out. It has highs and lows but the lows are never really low.
EW is a roller coaster, it has some unfortunate lows but it also has some frick huge highs, highest in the series really. I'm only gauging it by 6.0 however since the EW story officially "ended" there instead of 6.3 like it usually does.
Based on what others have said before the team being partially ripped off to work on XVI has harmed the story and side content rather harshly.
Dawntide will just be an adventure so I'm sure it will be...fine. Could be cool maybe though.

I went to XIV after finishing XVI. Just finished 5.0 and maybe it's the time sink aspect but I cared far more for this story than any other. HW being in sercond StB in third and ARR in last. I'll see how patch shb and EW compare I hope it doesn't shit the bed at the end.

Shb is by far the best story they’ve put out, which honestly isn’t saying much. EW feels like it was stitched together by an AI, I disliked it almost as much as ARR.
