They were better. Everything was. The sheer amount of remakes and reboots across all media should tell you that. Corperations focused on nothing but profit have distilled everything down in an attempt to mass produce success and in doing so have strangeled all innovation, forcing everything to adapt itself into a standardized format they can cram all the "successful stuff" into with zero regard for whether those things are compatible. The world of games and movies has been reduced to executives chasing the most recent winning formula which itself is a copy of another copy of a remake of a much better game from 2004.
They were painfully slow. Thank god gen 5 gave us at least two fast DS pokemon game.

I did. Gen 5 was somewhat slower, but overall I couldn't notice a real difference. It's literally only noticeable if you flip between the two.

They were obviously better, but people do tend to look at these games with rose-colored glasses and forget that they also have flaws
Always remember that the second-ever Pokemon game was already a full-price rerelease designed to cross-promote a TV cartoon that was already designed to cross-promote the games and other merchandise

They were pre-global branding so their design philosophy was way more concise, extremely predictable and comfortable of course but it was bearable because poke-mania died down during that time, meaning expectations weren't super high. Gen I favoritism is purely nostalgia goggles though, the games were dogshit.

Every Pokemon game on the DS is peak. It was the golden age of the franchise from a purely quality standpoint. You can always judge the health of a franchise by its spin-offs, after all. Gen 5 is the low point of this era but still mogs everything that came after it, a fact that has permanently mindbroken /vp/ and inspired daily seethe. Pokémon’s downfall began with the 3DS, and it died on the Switch. I’d take SM again over the mediocre dogshit we have now.

Gen 1 and 2 were good. Gen 3 was mid and Gen 4 is hard carried by HGSS which is just a remake of the Gen 2 games.
The only thing I don't like about gen 4 is slow battles

Honestly it's impressive how DP has both performance issues and multiple levels of game design decisions that make the game miserable to simply play on a moment to moment basis. Like, at least XY has the common courtesy to only have performance issues for the most part.
Aren't the Gen 3 titles the only ones consistently 60 FPS? I know Gen 6 has 60 FPS exclusively in menus for some fricking reason. Hell, I'm not even sure Gen 1 is 60 FPS, I wouldn't doubt GF was somehow incapable of making it work somehow.
