GD is also moddable and can be played offline and isn't a chink mtx skinner box designed to waste your time.

I rolled Tactician so I started off dual wielding and had a two handed weapon I could do Blitz and Force Wave with that I'd switch on the fly. This changed over time. I now have a pistol, a shield (bizarrely a combo that actually pumps more dps with some tweaking) and I switched secondary to a rifle that has a bonus faster projectile speed. Pistol is a trio elemental (fire, ice, electric) supported by the relevant elemental bullet skills and crowd control, the rifle physical with heavy stagger/knockback acting as a fast sniper supported by soldier skills. Armoured to the hilt, pumping out massive ranged damage and covering a wide damage group. Ironically the pistols pump out the most damage because raw speed.
2h performs better in most properly optimized ranged builds, because there are very good constellations specifically supporting 2h weapons, and because both fire strike and savagery have %more dmg multiplier, very rare thing in GD, for 2h.

Pure 1 class is almost always a bad thing. You pretty much always want a second class for at the very least you can get more resistances, or resistance debuffs, which are very important on higher difficulties.
If you want to focus on bloody pox, Shaman is decent for devouring swarn, to syngergize with pox, and wendigo totem for sustain, and it also scales off of vitality. Not to mention some decent passive buffs Shaman gets.
But pretty much anything will work if you use it right.
i did a pretty serviceable occultist/necro with bloody pox and whatever the soulsucc area move was, it's got big duration and gives mad lifesteal which helps a lot
i feel like you should hold off grabbing the one pox skill mod that makes enemies go berserk until you're pretty far along in the game as you can get absolutely clapped by bosses and things that don't die in 2 seconds
i also fricked with occ/sorc using the freeze skill so everything died unable to move but that one was a bit weird having to mix cold/vit damage
still fun though, you really can slap together almost anything

Playing Titan Quest as a int/dex Pilgrim right now and it's very comfy. You start to miss a lot of QoL stuff if you played Grim Dawn beforehand though.
Grim Dawn has some fricking awesome itemization in the late game. So many pieces of gear that can completely change a skills damage type is HUGE for making all kinds of weird builds work.

Not gear dependent but my favorite was a Nightblade with Oathkeeper.

Then you realize both of them have some insane acid damage modifiers you can stack like crazy. And oathkeeper has a skill that you can convert it's damage to acid damage easily.
And then you stack up passive auto attack bonuses and you attack at light speed and have poison stacks ticking for like a million damage vs bosses.
I've never really knuckled down and gotten to endgame, do you have to fully commit to a build (pure pet vs pure caster, etc) or can you make hybrid stuff?

plow through normal. if you have expansions, play until you get the factions unlocked in them before going to elite. it starts to get way more interesting past level 50 with gear and builds. every class combination has a fast leveling build.
Normal is slow and boring, but I get it, teach people about the game. Game is way better though once you've had a character beat ultimate and getting the item that allows other characters to unlock higher difficulty from the start.
