Is FTL an adventure? You adventure across like the whole universe to beat a massive final boss. But I'd scratch my head if it had the tag for some reason.
Adventure means you explore, solve puzzles, and collect items. Though by that definition many FPSs especially modern ones after Half-life are adventure games too.
Because 'FPS' typically carries the connotation of being primarily focused on frenetic action and bombastic set pieces. The Prime games, being Metroid titles, are primarily focused on exploration and collecting power ups to make progress through the environment.
>thinking every fps has these >thinking prime doesn’t have these
you people need to actually play the games you post about instead of arguing on what genres are supposed to be
Metroid Prime is a dog shit game with 47 scans and beams and awful first person platforming. It's so weird that people praise the frick out of this game when it feels like such jank shit to play.
so mgs is tactical espionage action despite espionage and not stealth despite espionage never being in the games and death stranding is a strand type game and not a walking/delivery simulator?
Developer intention is worth less than nothing, always.
The fact that there's puzzles and platforming means it's not an FPS, first person adventure is as good as you're going to get unless you go full "first person shooter platformer puzzle metroidvania"
Lots of shooters have both puzzles and platrforming.
The fact that there's puzzles and platforming means it's not an FPS, first person adventure is as good as you're going to get unless you go full "first person shooter platformer puzzle metroidvania"
because at the time fps games had nothing in them but shooting, while Prime wasn't about shooting at all, really
now, 16 years later, most FPS games have the interactivity and exploration of Prime, so it makes no sense anymore to label it as something else. but it did at the time
a consumer buying the game labelled as an "FPS" would have been PISSED at what he got
It's not an FPS. Miyamoto said so himself and the game is not designed or intended to be an FPS. I like Metroid Prime but on it's own the controls are shit and the biggest proof the devs weren't making an FPS. Not using the analog stick for looking around is insane when even before Halo games had figured out dual analog camera controls.
PrimeHack adds mouse control and analog camera control which is nice. But I'm most looking forward to the decompliation which will result in a port to PC just like SM64, OoT and Jak 1.
Outside of boss battles and a few forced encounters you can avoid fighting most enemies just like in 2D Metroids unlike in first person shooters where you pretty much have to kill everything you come across
genres are used to connotate lineage of inspiration and sameness, not a legalistic parsing of the genre's name. metroid prime doesn't play like any fps before it so calling it a fps is misleading
Because homosexuals don't want to admit that they enjoy shooting shit in games like neanderthals.
It's like how nobody wants to admit that mcnuggets are delicious. They ARE delicious, they chemically engineered to be delicious, I know that everyone and their dog has those nights where you stare at the ceiling with bloodshot eyes, drowning a pool of your own sweat, raggedly muttering "mcnuggets..." over and over again until you get some.
Same with FPS games, we all enjoy playing them, the only people that say they don't are worried others will look down on them for enjoying it, so they stick to their RTS games, and their fruity RPGs, while switching to offline mode so their gay little steam friends don't notice them enjoying CSGO.
Prime is an FPS game, and it's a good one too.
>>fans refuse to label it as an FPS
cause the crosshair moves independently from the screen at times and feels fricking stupid but no one ever wants to admit that this game kind of sucks
The real answer that no one will admit to is because Metroid Primes shooting mechanics are so simplistic and basic that it’s not even comparable to other games in the genre.
You basically just lock on and mash A, there’s no skill involved the game basically plays itself. Thankfully the game makes up for it in other areas like atmosphere and traversing the world but the actual shooting mechanics are so primitive that it’s not even worth mentioning
because it's not made by sony or xbox
But it is an FPS. Who the frick says Metroid Prime isn't an FPS?
Miyamoto said that Metroid Prime is a "First-Person Adventure" back in the day.
FPS and adventure aren't mutually exclusive.
Yeah, 'adventure' is a weird genre.
Miyamoto's time has passed. While influential in the past, he's become a burden to Nintendo, who will never let him go.
It's not a FPS. It's the closest to being a first person adventure game or something.
Because you shoot aliens and not persons.
Therefore it is not a first person shooter.
bug men are people too
You shoot human troopers in Prime 2.
*human bodies controlled by aliens
They're still people.
corpses aren't people anon
They might still be alive, they were only sleeping when you meet them.
so halo is not FPS, correct?
You don't have to aim in Halo, so no.
>You don't have to aim in Halo, so no.
what? you literally have to aim at anything to shoot.
The game does it for you.
What are you talking about? You don't have to aim at anything at all to shoot.
>console fps with aim assist
>"you have to aim"
pick one underage
Correct. Halo is a wolfendoom
if you kill too many marines they become enemies so there
>Halo isn't an FPS
apex kek
Yeah, its big brain time
galaxy brain

>thinking every fps has these
>thinking prime doesn’t have these
you people need to actually play the games you post about instead of arguing on what genres are supposed to be
Because it's a game for children.
>why
Because it has lock-on.
This is going to be a moronic thread.
So what.
Metroid Prime is a dog shit game with 47 scans and beams and awful first person platforming. It's so weird that people praise the frick out of this game when it feels like such jank shit to play.
>you shoot 90% of the time
>not dash jumping through every room and going out of bounds whenever possible
you're playing the game wrong OP
would you consider super metroid to be a third person shooter
Gratuitous use of lock-on meant shooting wasn't the focus. Your gun is basically a type of key
because it's so overrated and shit that it doesn't deserve a label besides "Not worth playing"
>is in first person
>you shoot 90% of the time
>fans refuse to label it as an FPS
why????
who in god's name says portal isn't an fps?
Correct people.
Lots of people consider it a puzzle game. Can you believe the absolute gall?
but it says first person as the 3rd or 4th tag on steam. And first guy is wrong since there isn't "shooting", more like placing portals
>You're looking for a gun that shoots holes. Not bullet holes, but...
what is a gun, is gunpowder a requirement for a gun? Are railguns, well, guns? Is the portal "gun" truly a gun?
Because the developers said it wasn't an FPS, they said FPA was the accurate term for it. First Person Adventure
Developers don't choose what genre a game is.
They literally do
No they don't. This thread is evidence of that. The playerbase decides the genre after release.
so mgs is tactical espionage action despite espionage and not stealth despite espionage never being in the games and death stranding is a strand type game and not a walking/delivery simulator?

The fact that there's puzzles and platforming means it's not an FPS, first person adventure is as good as you're going to get unless you go full "first person shooter platformer puzzle metroidvania"
Even DOOM has puzzles and rudimentary platforming. So I guess that's not an FPS either, huh?
because at the time fps games had nothing in them but shooting, while Prime wasn't about shooting at all, really
now, 16 years later, most FPS games have the interactivity and exploration of Prime, so it makes no sense anymore to label it as something else. but it did at the time

Meanwhile, in Prime:
>you have to shoot to do almost anything at all, including opening doors
Half-Life beat Prime to market by nearly 4 years.
Prime isn't even the first Metroid-esque FPS.
Half-Life isn't a Metroid-esque game.
No, but Powerslave is.
>Half life is descended from quake.
So? It's still about way more than shooting.
It's not an FPS. Miyamoto said so himself and the game is not designed or intended to be an FPS. It's in first person, and you shoot things. Most of the game is spent shooting at things.
What did I just say you horrid wiener goblin? So not test the game against a literal interpretation of the genre's name, that is not how genre works.
Half life is descended from quake.
Holy shit, it's the mandela effect thread again.
I've posted in this exact thread like 3 times in 4 years.

It plays like as if OOT/MM were First Person games.
