Is it just me or are a lot of the old fps games a bit boring
I've been playing Doom 3 and it is a real chore. You clear a room, then collect some ammo and maybe some health and armor. This repeats for a while until there is a cut-scene.
The game seems to be about constantly shooting things and there doesn't seem to be any reward for doing so. I remember in some HL2 commentary that the reason for the puzzles was because players were fatigued from shooting. If that's the case then why were all these shooters just constant shooting and nothing else.

No, not everyone is a fricking idiot like you. Old games are the best games out (sadly) nowadays. The aren't littered with PC bullshit and fricking women everywhere, and they don't care about your feelings. Look at Battlefield 2042 and then look at Doom 3, which one would you rather play? Dumb fricking child.
Almost all old school shooters suck, besides hl1 and blood
>If that's the case then why were all these shooters just constant shooting and nothing else.
Shooter devs are just stupid and never truly realized how important pacing is
>You clear a room, then collect some ammo and maybe some health and armor. This repeats for a while until there is a cut-scene.
Bro, you just described the FPS genre.
MetaDoom is still epic
Get out from your closet, Shill.
Hey, you just described why I think Doom 3 is one of the worst FPS I've ever played, it's encounter design is so damn boring.
I'd recommend you to check out the original games instead.
PC centric FPS games are very very boring. They're designed by and for boring people who would rather watch a number ticker in the top left of their screen than the game itself.
>PC centric FPS games are very very boring
>posts a PC game
a lot of fps suffer from repetitive gameplay and level design, bad enemy ai, and all around generic looking enemies
doom suffers from all of those, it was decent only for its time
doom3 wasnt a story driven fps, its more of a atmospheric horror game
i honestly cant think of an fps with really good story maybe besides hl ( to be fair i havent played many of them) , i loved return to the castle wolfenstein but thats just my opinion.
all games are a bit boring, and the only thing that helps is variety as you mentioned
This. I played Dusk after years of people shilling it. One of the most forgettable games I played in a while. All the mindless shooting blends together. Boomer shooters are so boring.
I prefer Doom 3 over Doom Eternal. Doom 16 was pretty cool but it took a weird turn at Eternal I think the perfect doom game would be horror and atmosphere of 3 and good shooting mechanics of 2016
You’d have to be a total moron to prefer 3 to Eternal
I may be moronic but I'm not gonna act like I prefer something over another just because its the more popular opinion. I prefer 3 over Eternal, old Prey over new Prey, and Fear as the best shooter of all time.
depends on what you are talking about.
I really think a lot of early to mid 2000s FPS blow ass. Not only did a lot of them seem stuck in a transitionary period between classic and modern shooter elements. they didnt do particularly either of them well. so you get dodgy shit like NOLF with its terrible everything or boring ass tech demos like HL2, Doom 3, and etc. I couldn't recall a single multiplayer title that was worth playing from that era either. Spergs will name drop BF, Quake, or UT. but not a single damn one of those games had a playerbase after three years and the only one to really survive from that era is maybe Counter Strike.
I only find myself enjoying 90s FPS since they had maniac action vibes or post 2005 FPS since they fully transitioned into setpiece shooters with nice aesthetics starting with COD 2.
if ur complaining about too much of a focus on shooting. what do you think the S in FPS stands for?
other than that, FPS is easily the most varied genre you can play. it's probably one of the only ones to blend into other genres too.
>I couldn't recall a single multiplayer title that was worth playing
wut? 2000s had best mp fps game ever produced (cs, quakes, ut99, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory) as for singleplayer they were always mediocre, it hasnt changed tho, give me 2013+ fps singleplayer game with exceptional story
>(cs, quakes, ut99, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
like i said, posers name drop these games all the time and they retrospectively died after 2 - 3 years despite sales/acclaim they had outside of CS. i also do not give a shit about story in FPS or games in general lol.
>posers
i played all those games and they are were relevant for over a decade longer than any of the shit games you cum guzzling zoomers play, now be a good boy and the floss homosexual
>I couldn't recall a single multiplayer title that was worth playing from that era either
All the Battlefield games
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Day of Defeat
I FRICKING LOVE DOOM 3
Anyone played Doom 3 in coop mode?
No it's not you
A lot of very old (90s) fps were shovelware imitating the few great ones, and with COD and HL a lot of old brands did stupid shit like trying to make brown&bloom "realistic" shooters and "horror" shooter
id Tech 4 is particularly tragic, Quake 4, Doom 3, Prey 2006, all of its games are bad or mediocre.
That said 2000s had a few fantastic shooters, ironically all new IPs, like FEAR, Riddick, Crysis, The Darkness
Ironically most of them were also successful but pretty much twisted in the sequels to chase a cinematic and scripted generic game structure.
Doom 3 is a bad game. Play doom 1 and 2
say one (1) fps game, not action adventure, not platforming with shooting, which is not: move from room to room, shoot homies and collect stuff to shoot homies better
DOOM 3 is a slog for me too and i much prefer older FPS games (most of the time)
Doom 3 expansion is leaps and bounds better than the base game somehow. Just play the expansion and skip the base game
It cracks me up still that they added their own gravity gun to the expansion
There's not a single good game in the idtech4
It was a cursed engine
