Is it possible to get into retro game collecting and not go into massive debt? Even Goodwill sucks for prices now. I don't need to have every system and game ever made, but it would be nice to play some of the classics on a crt tv. I could emulate, but I miss the old feel of a crt tv, plus it would be fun to play gun games with an actual gun. Did that ship sail?

>Emulators are not only free but easier to set up now than ever before
>Would rather support morons artificially inflating the old games market
You do you buddy
I'm not trying to start a fight. I was just curious. If that is the case what is a good setup for emulation? I have a micro form factor dell. Should I just load batocera on it or is it better to install windows and run emulators with a frontend like launchbox?
>get a flash cart
>download a bunch of ROMs onto it
Physical copies, at least as a backup, are still important.
Yeah, a 1TB HDD costs about $50, remember to get two for a back-up though.
How do you plan to play games without storage space, anon?
>Is it possible to get into retro game collecting
dont do it homosexual.
Do it slowly over time to look out for good deals, don't expect to shore up a massive collection immediately. Look for garage sales and hope people don't know what they have. All I can suggest.
If you want to just Play them. Get a flash cart
Obviously you can buy whatever you want, but game prices are high because more aren't bring made. Just don't use your credit card, or pay in full every billing cycle. Can't go into debt if you don't spend.
Set your budget per month, and if you don't use it, roll it into the next month. Sometimes it's best to just wait awhile and drop $300 on a heavy hitter.
Why do you want to get into collecting old games now, specifically? Did you get brainwashed by watching youtube lol
>le retro collecting
>not owning and playing
end yourself
>retro game collection
A massive meme that costs a frick ton of money, and you're off better emulating games since you get advantages over playing on hardware, like upscaling and adding filters
The only collection you should have are book collection, not only because it actually offers a different experience than reading them digitally, but also because you can get a lot older books the same price as one overpriced retro game
craigslist is about as good as you can get
i will sell you all my games for $2k if you want.
have about 30-50 each of nes, genesis, n64, dreamcast, gc, xbox, ps2
im keeping all the pc boxes tho.
People who buy CRT televisions need to be forced to dig their own graves.
Glad I got all my retro collecting out of the way before Covid hit. Except for the PC Engine GT, that cost me 400 USD and another 50 to get all capacitors replaced, so it's good for usage for at least another 20 years now. It's one of my grails.
>another 50 to get all capacitors replaced
do it yourself Black person
Never soldered before, and I didn't want a $400 piece of equipment to be my Guinea pig.
absolutely it is. main thing is to avoid the major online fronts (ebay etc) and stick to local flea markets and even the lesser trawled over by collector places online like gumtree. ive found some good deals on facebook marketplace too. almost got a whole box of NES games the other day for 30 bucks but my parents are getting mad about the amount of shit in my room and wouldnt let me buy it >.<
>I could emulate, but I miss the old feel of a crt tv, plus it would be fun to play gun games with an actual gun.
Flash carts and modded consoles.
>I don't want to learn how to do all th-
no. shut up. You can drag files from one folder to another.
Get a MiSTer and hook it up to a CRT. Or get an Everdrive (or appropriate device for your system of choice). Collecting is for morons.
>Collecting is for morons.
Yeah, man! Frick anyone who likes to possess things they enjoy! Frick 'em all, they're moronic!
Enjoy paying moron prices then, because that is all that is left. I'd suggest buying up any PS3/360/Wii games that you might want while they are still relatively cheap.
Got my retro purchasing out of my system already, between games I grew up with and ones I bought from the aftermarket before Covid. I'm already done buying PS3/360/Wii games, and most of my 360 games are shmups which have shot up in value in recent years.
1) don't buy games you don't want
2) don't spend money you don't have
easy
>not go into massive debt
Stay away from all of the popular 1st party/obscure retro games and you should be able to afford it.
Advice for collecting Neo Geo?
Yes. Don't.
Buy a NeoSD instead.
1: Become wealthy as frick
2: Buy one Neo Geo AES unit
3: Rebuild your fortune
4: Buy one Neo Geo game
5: Pray that it works.
>I don't collect this shit but ive heard so someone can correct me
One thing I don't see being mentioned in this thread is you will also need to actually take care of the collection if you go physical, you can't just play it a few times then let it sit forever, you will need to clean and maintain the collection. Whole thing sounds like an overpriced pain in and ass and even doing this the physical games will still randomly give out.
??? demonstrably not true. i've had my collection going for almost 8 years now and ive never "maintained" shit. just toss in a box and let the boxes pile up. something in a box wont "magically" break
