    Bad?
It's one of the best dungeon crawlers out there, not for the weak though

Elminage is good in general if you like this kind of game but the PC version of Gothic was badly mishandled, and annoyingly is the only English version unless the original got a patch.

Discord, they coordinate on there separately from the site and target boards. This sudden hatred for dungeon crawlers is primarily an effort of tone and thought policing.

If you play it without much DRPG experience, you're probably going to have a rough time of it. If you did play Original, though, you'll know most of the tricks to making a strong party, and the customizable skills definitely help with that. Which is good, because it's a lot more challenging than Original. PC translation's kinda shit, though.

Here's my opinion as a Wizardry fan

Elminage is a continuation of Starfish's "Wizardry Empire" series in all but name, just like the team that did Wizardry Xth, that were set in a high school, went on to do Class of Heroes, and another team went on to do other DRPGs, Empire/Elminage are fun if you strictly like the dungeon crawling grind, making parties, risk vs. reward delving, etc.

But if you like the side of dungeon crawlers like the original three games and Gaiden where there's lots of puzzles on every level, there's less grinding, and it's more of an adventure-y experience while still being a DRPG, steer clear, whenever I get the urge for Wizclone I just play Gaiden, and one of the later ones came out on steam recently and I highly recommend, I never had much fun with Elminage Original or Gothic but you might

Can you explain the Japanese Wizardry cronology?
      Could never track these games.

It's the perfection of the original wizardry formula. Dungeons are littered with spinners, magical darkness, and invisible one way doors. Chests are all trapped, enemies will rip you a new butthole, and all the gameplay mechanics are obscure and have to be manually discovered and worked out. Very enjoyable for fans of the genre but highly unpleasant for crawler tourists.

Sadly "GAME TOO HARD" is often a reason for reviewers to say games are bad. IIRC you'll need some graph paper for this one as the in-game map is ass, or can only be seen with consumables or something. Pretty fun game but it'll definitely step on your balls.

I never understood how the map system filters people. You can just use a level 1 mage spell to bring up the map or you can use the magic map you find early game. It can break after repeated use but its repairable with alchemist spells or by the blacksmith.

It's just a crazy thing to have limited map usages, a lot of people that are into crawlers have a tendency to look at the map every few steps so it's easy to see how that would filter someone and the rotating map doesn't help either.

The game easily accommodates frequent map use though. Its only a burden in the earliest stages of the game. And even then you can easily stockpile stacks of 9 maps in your characters inventories.
