When I held the N64 controller in my hands I just couldn't imagine how it could be used to move Samus around. So for me it was just too early to personally make a 3D Metroid"

This quote is basically saying that Metroid gameplay wouldn't work in 3D. Metroid has a lot of aiming involved in its combat, so you'd either get a game with a lot of fricking stop-and-aim-at-something gameplay ala 3D Zelda or a failure like Megaman X7/Metal Slug 3D

No way. NES, despite its market dominance and mass appeal was. Just about everything on NES was NES hard, and todays “casuals” will have next to zero fun playing anything that isn’t called “Super Mario Bros” or “Zelda” on it.

N64 was actually the first console I remember girls playing. In 2004 my first GF had one solely to play Mario Kart 64. She would only ever use Toad because “he’s the fastest”.

And THIS is my biggest problem with the N64. To me, Nintendo wasn't just Mario and Zelda, it was also Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Street Fighter etc...all franchises poorly represented or completely absent on the N64. The Rare games helped a lot but a true gamer cannot live on first party Nintendo stuff alone...

At the time there was no "casual and hardcore" gamer divide like that, it was purely "N64 has less/different games than the PS1". the whole "casual and hardcore" shit happened in the seventh gen, easily the worst generation and genesis of the shitshow that is modern vidya. >SNES and Switch wasn’t casual enough.

I would say that the SNES was far more 'casual' than the Genesis/ MD and TG-16 of the time. Sega's consoles were never truly casual outside of the EA sports games, and were usually targeted at arcade ports. The Playstation did have a broad 'casual appeal'. But I feel like the N64 managed to slip into that category too, and it really was because of the multi-player aspect.

WCW/nWo Revenge, when it was released was THE biggest game of that season, hitting at the height of the wrestling boom. At least in my school it was bigger than Ocarina and MGS combined. EVERYONE had that game.

          >

          >wrestling etc.

Those were also big. The WWF (WWE) and WCW games were popular as 2-4 player 'couch co-op' games on the N64. The N64 was ideal for wresting games, because of the 4-control ports and lack of loading screens that just got you into the game fast.

This is so true. It's easy for me to forget that the N64 was the go-to system for wrestling. It really carved a niche for itself it that genre.

I don't think the super nintendo is more casual by choice, later on Nintendo was trying to court developers with more powerful processors to capture the same frantic gameplay that made turbo and genesis games stand out. They knew they courted a more casual audience too so they were catering to them with titles like yoshi's island.

I think most super versions of games are slower, but often a little more detailed. CV4 comes to mind, whether you like that more or not is a personal thing but it mostly feels like iterations on old styles of play, while not really enabling new gameplay.

            >It's easy for me to forget that the N64 was the go-to system for wrestling
Well, WCW games for sure. WWF games were all over the place.
As WWF was taking over the business, Playstation Warzone was crazy big, but then Wrestlemania on N64 kicked the shit out of Attitude off the strength of the N64 WCW games. Once the Smackdown games came out though, Playstation consoles were the clear top dog going forwards until 2006 when the series went multiplat.

No, that would be the NES, the last time most games were difficult as a rule. N64 is where casualization began, which is why so many zoomzooms are fond of it as their brains can't handle non-fashionable (ie non-dark souls games) difficulty.

The NES wasn't some hardcore gamer system.
It was made for and marketed to children.

The reason games were hard back then was simply to frick with rentals so you couldn't just simply beat them over the week-end despite being pretty simple games with not a lot of content.

The NES was definitely marketed to a wide audience early on, including families. Anecdotally, I knew several adults growing up who owned or played the NES, some of them didn't even have kids. That all went away when 16-bit went around.

The N64 came out when I was in middle school and most kids owned one of those owing to the multiplayer, tentpole Nintendo stuff, Bond, wrestling etc. The only kids I knew that owned PS1s or God forbid, a Saturn were the hardcore gaming geeks types. So at least in my world, the N64 was far more casual

Reminder that the words "casual" and "hardcore" weren't really common lingo in video game discourse back in retro times (pre-2000s).
Even the word "gamer" was not really common and was mostly tongue-n-cheek along with "gamemaniac" and some others. People were expeted to put up with difficulty back then, so the differentiation wasn't necessary.

One of the biggest problems with the console was precisely the lack of games that weren't aimed at normies. N64 games were about jumping plushies, secret agents, action heroes and other safe premises.

Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye (very popular with 4-players), The Mario Party games, Mario Tennis (a lot of Mario), Diddy Kong Racing, Super Smash Bros. The N64 did have a 'casual gamer' appeal with the selection of 4-player party games that it had, back in the day.

To me, this was the NBA Jam of Hockey games. I know Open Ice existed before this one, which was also made by Midway. But, I never really cared for that one much. I feel like Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey took that formula and made it better, plus the instant 4-player mode made this a great party game.

I need to try this. Me and my bros always play 3 on 3 NHL (not retro) because it felt like a N64 party game. There is of course the NHL Hitz, but that one is probably too "advanced" with too many commands for my taste. The simpler they are, the better for party play.

Back in the day, there was an arcade near me that had a Open Ice 2 on 2 challenge arcade game, and it always felt like NBA Jam on Ice. But the game seemed a little off to me. I preferred the NBA Jam game more. I never really liked the idea of a 2 vs 2 hockey game. Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey feels like a sequel to Open Ice, but with Wayne Gretzky's name attached to it. I also feel like the ice physics were better in this. It's a fun arcade style hockey game with no frills. This was also the first sports game released for the N64 in 1996, and also the first N64 game to feature 4-players. There is also a sequel too.

To be honest, I haven;t put that much time into Wayne Gretzky 98, but the game isn't really much different from the first one, but has a newer roster and a few other minor things. Wayne Gretzky 3D hockey is very much an arcade style game, with not much in the way of simulation. I never got into the Breakaway games, the only other Hockey game I had was NHL 99, which was well... NHL 99 on the N64 and potentially one of the best hockey games on the system. I liked the original 3D Hockey as a fast and loose playing arcade style hockey game.
